Asus U31F-11YR-RX132V 2.66GHz i5/4GB/500GB/13.3"/1.88kg Laptop - $649

110

Saw this in the Dick Smith catalogue and thought it looked like a pretty decent deal. Only downside I can see is no optical drive, integrated graphics and it's not a 2nd gen i5. The weight and fact it's pretty slim are a bonus. Is there anything better out there for $650?

Yeah pretty good for a lightweight laptop with decent performance and long battery life. Great for students. Computer Alliance have had a similar price for many months now, although their U31F had an i3.

For better graphics and an up to date 2nd gen i5. Id go for the model that has superseded it, the U31SD. But it is $898.

    • I would look for the U31SD or is it U36SD with the 160GB SSD.

      • Are these available for $650?

      • some variations of U36SD have SSD, but you would be looking at close to $1700 from a brick and mortar store e.g. MLN. And a bit cheaper if you buy online from a store outside AUS, and add SSD as an upgrade. @dubmark The price is nowhere near $650.

I would buy this if you really want portability with great battery life, and don't want to spend any more than 800. You wont get many positives on ozbargain, as people here prefer performance at the expense of battery life and size.

        • Thanks for the reply. I'm just looking for web browsing, some media playing/streaming and decent battery life & weight. I have a 4 year old Toshiba with no battery life and half the backlights gone and an acer netbook which is a bit small to use as a sole web browser. Don't reckon I'll be playing any games or doing any intensive graphics work so the i5 seems plenty powerful for future proofing it for another 5 years. I've seen plenty of acer notebooks for sale but the brand doesn't really float my boat.

Dont know if a $650 laptop will last you 5 years. I know my old toshiba last 7 years (that was $3000!!)Nowadays laptops only last 3-4 years tops.

Here's another laptop with a second gen processor from toshiba and $50 less expensive. You will lose out on weight, size and battery life though. But you'l get a bigger screen, optical drive and dedicated graphics. http://www.jbhifi.com.au/computers/toshiba/15-inch-notebook-…

Or you could go for an el cheapo $400 laptop like this one, and replace it in a couple of years when technology makes things cheaper. It is heavy, looks worse, and will have an average battery life. But you get the bigger screen and optical drive. http://www.centrecom.com.au/catalog/43343pm-lenovo-g570-4334…

        • Sorry my bad.

I read your title as a further $100 off =[

    • Yes, the title is unnecessarily confusing. Just the price please remove the rest.

  • "Is there anything better out there for $650?"

    Lenovo E320 perhaps.

    • This has specs and features the E320 doesn't have: faster clocked CPU, Altec Lansing speakers, and 8 cell battery.

  • How about the Samsung NP350U2B-A03?

It's selling instore at OrangeIT for $699. Weight is 1.4kg inc the 6 cell battery

Battery life is apparently 4-5hours which is pretty poor and it can struggle to play HD movies which is a bit disappointing!

I'm thinking of going for a G570 now though for $400 from MSY/Centrecom - seems like a great all rounder.

  • I'd be tempted if it was sandy bridge, which is why I haven't gone for the sub-$600 one from onlinecomputer.com.au
