    great app

    • +1

I missed out last time it was free. Happy I caught it now.

    • +2

      Great app BECAUSE:

      • can chat with friends on Windows Phone 7 and Android (Blackberry too? Don't know)
      • you're not trusting Apple with all your personal messages

and now even better because it's free.

      • +2

        Yes Blackberry too

      • +14

"great because… You're not trusting apple with your personal messages"

Correct. Instead we're putting trust in a young, small third party developer who uses push notifications to send these messages. Specifically, Apple's own push notification service, provided to third party developers. For their iOS apps.

I'm seeing something wrong with your logic.

        • depends, apple track u down anyway. guess that wont change anything

        • +2

Push notifications are a handled through a device-level API, not a live service provided or monitored by Apple.

You have to trust someone, and WhatsApp have donr nothing to date to warrant distrust in my eyes.

      • and nokia

      • +1

And Nokia, too. I have a Nokia E63 and use WhatsApp to chat to my girlfriend (who is in the USA at the moment and uses an Android). Being able to send audio/video messages is really nice, and the push works really well.

  • free only today or from now on ?
better than Viber can send pictures too.. :>

    • +2

viber sucks their servers are slow compared to what's app

  • +2

For those who want to know a bit more about iOS's aggressiveness towards some ex-hot apps:

    • +1

more free features and apps I don't see a problem.

    • +2

Perhaps some of these developers should have a go at suing Apple for copying their ideas, unless of course they're not novel.

  • +4

can send videos, message android users, and blackberry users.

    • yeah, iOS 5 can only send it to other apple devices

this is good if you have android friends :)

      • +12

real apple people don't have android friends

    • +3

      Only between IOS no good.

Android version also free on getjar.

      • +8

The Android WhatsApp is free on Market lol

        • +4

Has 1 or 2 year expiry though..
Workaround is - reinstall app on an iphone with Whatsapp, and sign in from there, your account gets extended by 10 years or so :p

        • Its free for the first year, then its a paying service each year after.
Or you can do as suggested before me :)

        • +3

I hope I'm not using WhatsApp in 10 years time.

        • +3

I think it's only something like $2 per year after the 1 year free. I'd gladly pay that much since the app is pretty good.

    • +1

.. and windows mobile 7. Essentially this app covers 95% of the smartphone mobile market.

      • ..also the Windows Mobile 7 version is free also.

        • +3

…and Symbian ;)…also free. iOS was the only platform where it actually did cost money

      • Yes 95% but you need your 95% friends using it :p

    • Don't you have any friends with Android or Blackberry?

    • Interoperability is one thing Apple fails to recognise.

      • +4

more of "Mono-operability" is one thing Apple thrives to achieve

  • I just paid for this app yesterday. Anyways to refund and repurchase for free?

    • email itunes support they will refund you

      • -1

        Does that actually work?
        I tried it before
        1) For an app that my cousin playing around in my account through IAP. Refund denied
        2) A public transport app that I bought it and got pulled off the shelves 1 week later (no support any more from the developers). Refund denied
        3) An game, which I bought for 7.99 then dropped to FREE the next day. Refund denied.

So no matter now much I whine and scream, it seems like Apple is just being a b**ch and won't do anything about it.

        • No, apple will not refund. Prices change on the App store on a daily basis, sometimes multiple times in a day for the same app. You will not get a refund just because you bought it when it wasn't free. I dunno what annoynimous is talking about.

        • -1

I think you're more of a b**ch than Apple with the amount of times you ask for refunds.
In the first instant, you should be asking your cousin to be paying, not Apple. Second instance, buying an app doesn't mean you're buying any support. Take it to the dev. Third instance, just suck it up and support the developer since you were gonna pay for it anyway.

        • @ Crowdedthehouse: I am merely saying this to show annoynimous that Apple don't do any refunds. As for the amount of times that I ask for refunds, the first case is before they implemented the IAP restriction and I am sure many people complained thus they implemented IAP-disabler. Second and the third, I agree with you that's why I don't hold any grudges any more and if there is any app/games worth paying. I will still pay.

So I am not being a b**ch here, just being a normal consumer.
I am sure you are picky when you shop too (or got an unsatisfactory response) ;)
Humans hate to be ripped off, right?
          We are only human.

      • I hate to be ripped off just hours I purchased this then it becomes free.
Only costed $1 I just don't feel well about it. If they don't refund its fine. After all its only $1 I don't think I should spend the effort

Start a riot at Wall Street

    • I just bought this app 2 days ago as well..

  • -3

nice app but its no BBM.

    • +4

Yep it actually works, frankly this ain't the time to spruik BBM.

    • wait are you trolling?

      • when did it stop working in australia. unless you're in europe but services are running now.

        http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kAG39jKi0lI&feature=player_em…

crowdedthehouse. oh geez my opinion differs from the 100+ who voted positive. oh yeah mate totally trolling, I need to give this a double negative vote with a triple twist lift. whatsapp does a good job copying bbm with the added benefit of being multi-platform - I have it installed too, its nice… whats so hard to understand? Do I need to read it out slowly for you next time?

  • +1

great app, its free you should have this installed on your iphone

  • Can't find it on iTunes?

  • Kakaotalk is free on both ios and android

  • anyone know a similar app available for iPad? I don't have a jb iPad.

  • Awesoe app, i talk to my wife all day with it..:D

    • +2

      saves you going home then……..

  • Great app. I find it hard to believe that Apple will be able to kill this app when so many people already use it.

    • agree. whatsapp's cross platform gives it the edge. The ios feature will fare about as well as facetime… skype has advantages in being cross platform.

  • Its alot better then Viber also, everyone should just get this app for ultimate chat!!

  • does this work on iPod touch 4 cos when i try to download it I get a message 'your request cannot be completed'?

    • +1

iPad was not considered a telephony platform, so whatsapp was not allowed on it. That was a recent move. Must be a similar story with the iPod Touch as well. Of course that logic doesn't stop Apple from deploying iMessage on all their devices. Hypocrites.

PS: I am a fan and a dedicated user of Apple gear. No flame wars please.

    • Whatsapp only works on iPhone.
You also cant download it from the appstore on an iPod or iPad. Devs did it that way. You can push it onto the device thou via iTunes.

      • Whatsapp only works on iPhone.

No, it doesn't. It's also available for Android, and works between the two.

        • I believe jok3r was referring to the iPhone being the only Apple device supported.

        • Yes even with Android it seems to be only working with telephony devices. It's free on Android so I got it installed on my Nexus One and Optus MyTab, but it's not compatible with my Acer Iconia A500.

    • it can work if you get it via unofficial means

  • wasnt this always free?

I've had this before and I dont remember paying for it.

    • It was free, then it went to 99c (which I paid for), now it is free again.

  • anyone elses 3GS heaps sluggish after the ios5 upgrade? been running it for a week or so now and its painful sometimes…(trying to download this now on it reminded me how laggy it can be)

    • Just part of the trend really. Same situation with IOS4 on the 3G - it ran it but only for the sake of running it - wasn't a great user experience but it did the job.

    • Mine is lagging noticeably, thought it was certain games like smurfs village up to Level 36 and others tying up the system resources. It is also now buzzing on certain calls. If it gets worst, might look into jailbreaking or something radical.

  • Yay! Going to tell my iPhone friends to get on the bandwagon…

  • For Android you can download getjar, and download it for free through that app. It's like a 3rd party market program.

    • It's free for 1 year via the Android Market, and then something like $2 per year after the first year.

  • When i first got my phone, i was told to download this app first, so i did. I actually paid for this app when it wad about $3.00.

I've download several apps since them….this Is by far the most practical app on my phone, I SMS like no tomorrow on this, it's mad because my friend also takes a nice photo of the answers for his homework with his phone, then sends it to me using this app =D its saves us from scanning and emailing!! I love this app…

Btw, apple plans to kill this app? Please tell me it's not true…=O

  • Who says competition isn't a good thing?

  • +2

be aware of hidden carrier charges if you dont have a unlimited data plan or arent connected to wifi. I ended up getting charged from vodafone for many small 10kb sessions on my Nokia E63. So i ended up telling vodafail to block all GPRS so that Whatsapp doesn't try to connect to VF network now. it only connects via WIfi.

  • Update of Viber today, can now send text in lanscape mode, I also reckon the call quality has improved and best of all can send images.

  • +1

    whatsapp rocks

  • Doesn't support iTouch =(
But with iOS5, hopefully it have something similar!

    • i'm waiting for an itouch one!! they should really make it

      • They made it in the earlier version, but decided to take it off due to unknown reason (what I think is because it gotten too popular on the itouch and not enough revenue from telecomm companies… just a guess)

  • stupid question but do i have to have an apple account to download it?

    • Yes, but since it's free. You can create a new account in a few clicks!

  • If you don't care about the audio and video, why don't people just use some Google Talk client? Those are available to various mobile platforms, even well integrated to Android, you can use it on any PC too and it does not cost a thing.

  • whats app has always been free as far as i know….i got it ageeeeeees ago :/

    • It 'was' free until they increase the price to $.99 for both Apple and Android. I think due to the new iOS5, they dropped it down to free to increase usage.

  • Very good app and I use it all the time on my iphone (paid) and android (free). It's getting popular. Even with iphone's free iMessage it won't put a dent in it's popularity because it's cross platform. So go get it quick.

Why is everyone fail to mention Kik Messenger? http://kik.com/

It's cross platform support Android, IOS,blackberry and Windows phone, except Nokis's own symbian which I'm totally cool with that.

    Its super fast and FREE.

    • I've installed kik too, its not bad and the price is free on all platforms which is a nice touch. the UI looks nicer than whatsapp but having extensively used both, whatsapp seems to be better on battery life but they've recently released a newer version so I might see if they've made improvements.

There's like a dozen of these type messengers out there now and personally for cross platform these two are probably your best bet unless you get IMO which uses your standard im's like MSN etc.

Still prefer to use bbm over these because it beats it out with speed, battery life and those who I get in contact the most. personal preference but I can understand those negging me because its only available on blackberry. Oh no a blackberry user :P

  • +3

    whats an iPhone?

    • haha, nice one!

  • how to add blackberry contact to iphone??

can send message to Iphone's whatsapp only..

  • Just added to my iPhone, I like this app as I use it on my crack berry. Thanks

  • -6

Should be free long time ago, why only now?

  • Just fyi WhatsApp have been trying to move everyone (including iOS users) to a $1.99/year pricing system (current android price).

    • If they do that I will uninstall and put iOS5 for iMessage stuff paying annually. It should be FREE and FOREVER FREE once app is purchased. Screw them!

      • Why should it be forever free? They need to pay their monthly server bills! $2 is nothing compared to how good the app is!

        • That's because he is a tightass and hangs around Ozbargain ;)

        • -1

@moo - Surely even Ozbargainers can afford $2 per year :P

        • @moo - Surely even Ozbargainers can afford $2 per year :P

Sure. On things that typically we want that typically cost >>$2/year. :)

        • Cause its Ozbargain spirit.

  • question. do they ask you to pay $2 to subscribe on the iOS app?

    • No they don't
