Where Is The Oz in OzBargain?

For a website that prominently uses the Australian name (Oz) in its trademark, there appears to be very little in the way supporting (or even recognising) Australian made products or services.

For example, there is no official recognition of Australian made products or feature/icon that make it easy for users to identify product origin. Additionally, the majority of goods posted on this website are from the US or China (both of which have been responsible for the spread of the coronavirus and medical supply shortages).

Given the above and the demographics of the website which have made clear there is no interest in Australian products, I propose to rename this site to one of the alternatives below. Either way, long live prefixBargain.com.au

From the words of our beloved leader "It must be Australian or benefiting Australians (we are OzBargain after all)". https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/71559

Final edit: The poll has been removed by the Ozbargain team citing that it is pointless and the outcome is meaningless which I find most egregious. I think the results of the poll were clear but unfortunately it is unfeasible to change a well established and frankly loved name. In good spirit, I will not be progressing this further to reduce moderation time and I ask that anyone involved in this post click an advertisement on Ozbargain to cleanse yourself of sin. I will be using my time more effectively by reading free Amazon ebooks.

They also misunderstand what "simp" means, and also "CCP army" since you can check all the comments posted here and see the history for yourself.

Any reasonably average joe knows that when someone says "I'm willing to accept I am wrong" usually isn't, especially when their behaviour points otherwise. Some people love to double-down on their stance no matter how high the evidence stacks up against them. Also putting yourself in the same shoes as a patriot/soldier, for what is essentially, a mere internet post is in poor taste at best. At worst, it will cause some distress to actual combatants and victims who may come across it.

Well done OP, in a single day you managed to piss off pretty much everyone in our extremely multicultural land!

          • +2

@nahi11: Sounds like there are many reasons why you should leave this site and do other things that might be infinitely more beneficial than being here.

            • +1

@gmail92: Mod, can we ban OP for his own good so he can move onto more important things in his life?

              • @gmail92: OP should concentrate on building a new website called "AusstraliaMadeBargain".

It will be great website but that's not what OzBargain is all about.

  • +1

let's see how.many negatives his post can get

  • Lol.
Is OP one of the people complaining Kmart stuff are made in China?

Do we need a concentration camp in Australia for non Aborigines as well?

I would have thought .com.au was a dead give away.

in any case i fully support aussies. i only buy aussie uranium

  • +2

I think you're 10 years too late mate. Bargains posted by the community used to be like fluidtek (worse of the worse customer service when Eddie wasnt happy), some fringe stores, MSY etc. Ebay back then was like gumtree with postage. Amazon wasn't around and customer service wasnt expected and people lined up hours at MSY. Also do me a favour and look up the founder of ozbargain.

    • -1

Most people know who the founder, Scotty is. What aspect about him are you referring to?

For the record, OzBargain donates significant amounts of money each year for Australian charities, with one of the requirements being "It must be Australian or benefiting Australians (we are OzBargain after all)". https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/71559

If OzBargain is donating to Australian charities for the nations benefit, why don't we also support everyday Australian jobs and businesses (like Ozbargain)?

      • why don't we also support everyday Australian jobs and businesses (like Ozbargain)?

Electronics are big in Australia. We don't have the capability to manufacture a lot of electronics so they're made in China. Who has the biggest range of electronics at the lowest price? China. Many can be bought overseas cheaper than the local reseller.

        • Agree, but can you tell me a country where electronics aren't big (other than perhaps North Korea)?

          • @nahi11: Don't get me started on North Korea. They're a booming market with electronics coming out of China with some NK rebranding ;)

            • @Clear: How about you get us some half price iPhones and we end this thread?

I do like the idea of showing where the product is made

  • +3

    surprised op didn't suggest OzBogan!

  • +1

Years ago the community were very positive to deals that were local and a bit more expensive than what was available in China. Unfortunately that view in the community has gone for the most part.

    • Do you have any ideas for why this might of happened?

      • Part of the reason is that the overseas market has matured. There's a lot less risk involved than there was buying from China say 6+ years ago. There is also an abundance of quality brands available with faster and cheaper methods of shipping.

The other thing that I can't really explain in detail is that the community as a whole has changed as it's grown.

        • Good points - it would be interesting to know what the prefixBargain team thinks of this aswell and if it impacts in how they develop the site or attract new users/ bargains.

  • +3

As sad as it sounds, if you want something Australian made…good luck trying to find enough bargains to build a website around. There's a reason why holden, mitsubishi, ford, nissian, Renault, Toyota, Volkswagen, Chrysler all left Australia in terms of manufacturing. The labour/material cost to sales ratio is just way too low to be sustainable. There is simply no market in Australia, full-stop.

  • +7

Hey mods, is there a prize for the most moronic posts on OZB???

Surely this one must make the short-list?

    • +1

Based on posting history, same guy who tried to post:

"Should Ozbargainers be required to take an IQ test"

  • +1

ozbargain = finding bargain in australia.

  • +1

why dont the mods just delete this rubbish?

    • +2

which is why i like this site, no censorship, people are entitled to their opinion, a forum like this allows everyone to participate in this debate, although there is no debate about the name ozbargain as there is no better name to name this site than ozbargain.

    • +1

it's free entertainment, therefore it's a bargain. the only way to make it better would be if it came with free popcorn

    • -3

If you don't like it, scroll on. this isn't china.

  • I would suggest OP to propose a new website called ozmade. I do think Australia should support more manufacturing, this requires leadership, support from government, create training, infrastructure, etc, it will be at least a 10 year plan.

    • Thanks

      • +1

i suggest the OP create this website. noones stopping them

        • -1

I am committed to the success of OzBargain regardless of whatever the name ends up being.

          • +1

@nahi11: Well if ozmade also includes trade and services then you should definitely look into labour costs.

This tradie moron for example wanted to charge $500 moving some roles and has no manners, rude and steals items.

            https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8472833/Tradies-boa…

Unfortunately Australian labour costs are through the roof with extremely high markups.

          • @nahi11: the name is ozbargain and a name change was never in question.

  • i have been on this site for ages, it never occur to me that the oz in ozbargain is about finding product that is Australia made.

  • As suggested by htc

  • +4

From the words of our beloved leader "It must be Australian or benefiting Australians (we are OzBargain after all)". https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/71559

That was taken way out of context. @scotty was talking about the donations to charities which in no way relates to this post.

    • Completely unfair to take that quote out of context…..

  • More China bashing. Original.

    • -3

I mentioned both US and China "Additionally, the majority of goods posted on this website are from the US or China (both of which have been responsible for the spread of the coronavirus and medical supply shortages)."

It's just facts. Just because you don't like it or that it doesn't suit your agenda doesnt mean its 'bashing' or hateful. I apologise for the inconvenience.

  • +1

Great post OP and you've ruined it too

  • +1

I personally would like to see if ozbargain could promote Australian owned businesses and or Australian made products. Nothing super major but having a logo like a little Kangaroo next to the store's name or product manufacturer. Or maybe one superimposed over the websites thumbnail. Just to show it's Australian owned or made.
Have 2 if it's both Australian made and owned.

But saying that even if it's Australian owned it doesn't mean it's actually Australian made even when they make products here.
I recently bought https://www.davidjones.com/brand/tontine/23144686/Luxe-Soft-… thinking oh it's "Luxe Australia" whatever that means. Tontine oh they make stuff in Australia website says proudly "Australian for over 60 years".
Tiny small print on the front 'Made in China'. So I was thrilled when I found that out after I paid for it. :(

So it would be a minefield as even under the same company: Product A might be made here. But Product B might not be.

If Scotty or another admin could find a volunteer or for someone to work in exchange for eneloops to verify if it's Australian. I'd be happy to help cover costs of a pack. :)

  • Couldn't agree more

  • +3

Seriously people have too much time on their hands… If you are that passionate, start your own website rather than just sit there in the comfort of your home and whinge. If not, shut up and don't use the site. Nothing more than an arm chair critic.
No better than environmentalists who protests about mining and they happily use products made from coal. Probably too stupid to realise that coal is used for making steel and not only in power plants.

  • What do we make in this country that could be posted here? I mean, you get your supermarket deals (although the pandemic has dulled that somewhat); everything else is manufactured overseas. Even if someone posts a Good Guys, Harvey Norman or JB deal, the products aren't made here, so I don't think you've really thought this through. No one's going to pay $20 for a cable that can be bought for $5 from overseas.

  • +1

lol op dont bother using ozb your most ignorant bargains hunter.

lol.. It is pretty obvious the poster is Pauline Hanson.. busted!

  • +4

Contacting Tim Cook I can’t find any apples on Apple.com :(

  • Australian made products, made with Australian materials, made in Australia, and sold by Australian companies, with Australian customer service representatives..?

I don't think there would be any "deals" that would create enough site traffic to even cover the cost of the domain name costs.

  • OzBargain = Bargains in OZ or Australia.
Where does it say OZ made products. We should all support products which are made in Australia. #Troll Post, #IdontHaveAnythingElseToDoPost.

  • As a user of this website, I'm happy with the posts/contents being published by fellow OzBargainers and I see no reason to change anything related to this website.

    1. Good site with good bargains.
    2. Good domain name.
    3. Shared by all and made available to all.
    4. If OP has a problem with the things not being manufactured here, OP might as well help the country by setting up a manufacturing unit maybe? Regardless, people should always have options and should have the right to share the options just like how OP has shared their feelings.
  • +1

Ozbargain and Ozmade are two separate (although not exclusive) target markets. Perhaps you should set up OZmade — it could become as big as Ozbargain if the audience is big enough!

  • Dear Mods, the poll seems to have been expired or removed?

    • +1

It wasn't a particularly useful poll, nor did it have well explained options to poll for.

      • -1

Please reach out to me if you need instructions on how to click on the available poll options so that you are able to participate in future polls.

        • Some times a Pole is better than a Poll. lol

      • +2

I don't think this whole thread is particularly useful and the OP is just a troll.

        • I had my fun when OP wants to support OZ, but claims to drive a MERCEDES A200 'AMG'.

  • Please add a poll option for "Ultimate troll post of the year" you'll get far more votes, thanks.

    • This is not a "troll post". I and others have made some very valid and useful points which has merit for further discussion.

  • -1

The post seems to have been removed from the front page aswell as the poll. I guess Ozbargain has succumbed to the trolls and haters but I appreciate the forum to air my thoughts.

    • The post seems to have been removed from the front page as well as the poll.

Pretty much sums up the motivation for the original post…

Only 31/166 comments.. Sure you'll get it back up there with thoughtfully aired comments..

  • +1

What a spectacular backfire by the OP. I wish I could respond with a gif. Coz this is perfect.

    • +2

Yes truly, I was not expecting such an adverse reaction! I must rethink this.

      • -2

        What !

Anyway OP well done for doing a post that competes with the free ebooks. That aren't really they sting you if no unsubscribe.
Both a waste of space .

  • +1

While there is a clear side that OzBargainer's have on this debate. I think there's a tiny glimmer of opportunity in what OP wrote.

Flagging Australian products or owned businesses, so that OzBargainers can filter on bargains where the products are solely Australian manufactured/produced and/or the business is wholly Australian owned.

Would be a nice touch and something that could definitely go towards supporting the Australian economy first and foremost.

  • +1

    Final update posted

    • Thanks buddy. Was this question posted as a result of your own conscious choice, or or was it driven by some external stimulation or motive?

      • -2

I wanted to impress all the Ozbargain babes.

In all honesty, I have several of these types of ideas pop into my head including a full realisation of Ozbargain Pro. This time I put pen to paper. I was not sponsored by Amazon as there is a plethora of free ebook posts on Ozbargain already.

  • OP, how bored are you in quarantine?

Nope. He's in NSW and permanently penalty boxed for being a troll and not learning his lesson (hope he's reading this comment!)

  • …you do know website names doesn't specifically have to be related to the content of the website, right? For example I could have a website called gamergirls.com.au where you would think it would either be site with all the hot gamer girls pics somewhere there or a site for girl gamers to meet up or even something to do with games and the owner happens to be a girl (ie me hence the word girl at the end), but no, it's actually a site for a trucking company that hire out trucks.
