Where Is The Oz in OzBargain?

For a website that prominently uses the Australian name (Oz) in its trademark, there appears to be very little in the way supporting (or even recognising) Australian made products or services.

For example, there is no official recognition of Australian made products or feature/icon that make it easy for users to identify product origin. Additionally, the majority of goods posted on this website are from the US or China (both of which have been responsible for the spread of the coronavirus and medical supply shortages).

Given the above and the demographics of the website which have made clear there is no interest in Australian products, I propose to rename this site to one of the alternatives below. Either way, long live prefixBargain.com.au

From the words of our beloved leader "It must be Australian or benefiting Australians (we are OzBargain after all)". https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/71559

Final edit: The poll has been removed by the Ozbargain team citing that it is pointless and the outcome is meaningless which I find most egregious. I think the results of the poll were clear but unfortunately it is unfeasible to change a well established and frankly loved name. In good spirit, I will not be progressing this further to reduce moderation time and I ask that anyone involved in this post click an advertisement on Ozbargain to cleanse yourself of sin. I will be using my time more effectively by reading free Amazon ebooks.

It is a site of bargains for Australians.
The bargains do not have to be Australian in origin - so long as they are available to Australians.

      • +23

        Apples and oranges dude.

      • +51

most insane response on ozbargain to date.

Mate, you're going to be really dissapointed banggood.com

      • +2

You make an important point with your post and deserve credit for that.
You are pointing out that many Australians would sell their mothers for a quick buck.
At the highest levels our politicians are bought cheap by china and sell out our national interests. I think thats what you are getting at, not the harmless buy junk from amazon stuff on here.

      • Apples and fridges.

I don't know how you can make a condescending remark regarding someone's party life when you're the one being overly pedantic about the use of the word 'Oz'.

The Kangaroo logo is used to indicate products made in Australia. Where is it stipulated that the name 'Oz' can only be used for Australian made products? Can't 'Oz' be used because it's an Australian based site catering to Australians?

      • If you're referring to the Made in Australia logo then no. That IP can only be used in certain circumstances.

They can put a kangaroo on their products though as long as it doesnt ape the made in Australia logo.

      • You must be sad to have at parties.

      • and the most twisted response award goes to..

      • Its not even going to be a kangaroo anymore, just some gold wattle with AU stamped in it. So much for Oz.

      • Can we have a new poll - who would ozbargainers want to invite to their BBQ - Blaircam or Nahi11?

      • With all the issues we have in this world, we have this!!!

    • +5

It's a bargain website for people in Australia. The Australian consumer is the 'Oz' part.

OzBargain is for deals available to Australia, regardless of there origin. Aussie Broadband sells google nests which aren’t made in Australia does that mean they have to change their name as well?

If you don’t like the name you can find your bargains elsewhere.

      • +34

        ozbargain is made in Australia

      • +1

Well OzBargains primary revenue is from advertising companies (not by deal posts but by actual adverts) and I’m sure most would be Australian so how doesn’t that warrant the “Oz” name?

          • +3

@nahi11: Just remember that these are Australian companies paying for the ads.

            • -4

@WoodYouLikeSomeCash: All ads I am seeing currently which include Splunk, XM trading and banggood are not Australian companies. Try again please.

              • +1

@nahi11: So you missed The Good Guys ads?

                Try again please.

Aren't google ads based on your search history? So maybe you need to stop searching for overseas products?

          • @nahi11: You must be a blast at parties.

You keep going on about the free ebooks, so why don't you find something better to post instead of complaining?

  • +22

Added a suggestion, hope you accept it.

You..you don't see the irony of this statement with this post? Or are you just trolling?

I'm not Aussie. Am I allowed to be on and use this site? Or is it only for Aussies?

On a (kind of) related topic - during peak COVID there were suggestions that Australia should manufacture more stuff on shore, but I also have a feeling not everyone would want to pay substantially more than what they pay now for imported mass produced stuff. Is it a case if we can’t please everyone?!

    • -3

Thank for your perhaps the most insightful comment in this post.

You are right, it is going to cost more to manufacture in Australia. However, the Aus Government is spending literally billions of dollars trying to create jobs and prop up the economy, a bulk of the expenditure is being siphoned overseas instead of creating jobs that support local manufacturing. This isn't very concise but I think everyone gets the jist of it despite all the negative votes.

      • +12

Lol, the government who sold Testra, which now employs people overseas.

The government that butchered the nbn and currently employs a shit load of people overseas, only to provide a half arse solution. Yeah let's start an Aussie business. Oh wait, I've got some shitty nbn copper service.

Telco is not the only example, but I think you get it.

        • +5

The government butchered employment in general when we priced ourselves wayyyyy above our actual value.

      • australian government tried this with the Car manufacturing industry with billion dollars of funding to Ford, Holden, Mitsubishi and Toyota

    • Some things I would pay more for, like furniture other things like baby clothes I cant justify paying a lot for as they grow so quick. But if those things were good quality then they would last and be available second hand. Id certainly prefer to buy good quality oz made kids clothes second hand than import cheap clothes new that contribute to landfill.
Foodstuffs I try to buy local as much as possible.
The issue of course is cars, computers, phones, whitegoods etc. No local options at all.
I think it would be hard to get some products off the ground at the moment as so many people are hard up for cash sadly.

  • Nahi11, red or blue? Last nights game was pretty interesting hey, not sure how the picked the winners though?

OP is woke AF.com would be a good alternative domain

How do you put an elephant in a fridge?

    • You open the refrigerator door, put the elephant inside, and close the door!

      • If you get into the fridge with the elephant, you can see if the light stays on when you shut the door.

    • This is the most important question in the entire thread

  • I’m interested in how you called those MIC Australian flag.

  • Moaners are going to Moan it is a free to access bargain website but you got this 'choosy better' (check redit to see what that means) moaning
