The review you linked to is for the AX58U/AX3000.

This AX56U theoretically has lower throughput speeds on the 5ghz band as its missing the 160mhz channel thats present on the AX56/AX300 model.

    • Thanks! The review link has been updated.

RT-AC86U is better? Worth the extra $$$?

    • +1

this would have a better processor in it vs the AC86U and its good for a few years since AX wireless will be in everything in the next 2-3 years

    • I can't find a direct comparison. I know the RT-AC86U is better at VPN performance.

    • +3

I believe that the 86u also has better wi-fi 5 (AC) range performance.

  • No vlan tagging?

    • Does any consumer router have this function?

      • +2

Yeah a few routers released in the last few years do.

    • ASUS put VLAN ID under the IPTV tab.

ax3000/rt ax58u are also on sale at $350 here. Dong Knows review had it looking very competent for the price.

      • +1

$400 seems to be rrp, at least I couldn't find anything close to the $350 PCCG has it for.

It seems to be pretty good spec/real world performance wise. Worth the cash if you're going for a gigabit plan

      • +1

$350 is cheap for wifi 6. Top of the line wifi 6 comes with a hefty price tag of $700 to $1400!

  • You sure this is a router, it doesn't look like a drone in disguise?

  • How about for comparison between this one and GT-AC2900

  • Currently have the Telstra provided Technicolor DJA0231 and on NBN 100/40. Is there any notable performance gain by getting this?

    • +1

Not really speed gain, but wifi reliability gain, and more future ready

      • Thanks! In that case I'll keep going with what I have and reassess if I ever want to upgrade to gigabit NBN or need the fast WiFi speeds for wireless VR

        • Wifi performance gains come with wifi 6 enabled high end laptops, mobiles & so on.

Surprisingly Technicolor routers are capable of handling 1000 Mbps wired.

          • +1

@Twix: Ah cool I can continue to use it then if I ever upgrade to gigabit NBN as my desktop PCs are all wired

    • +1

Lucky you. Telstra gave me the LH1000 which literally is a piece of shite

Performance, no. Better firmware, yes. ASUS deliver some of the best firmware for consumer market and quite frequently too, and you can get Merlin or Openwrt if you want, more choice (fairly sure there's Merlin for this model already).

WiFi wise the ASUS routers are always better. Even the much older AC68U has stronger WiFi than the Technicolour Gen2 I had, testing side by side.

      • Thanks mate! Very useful info

  • I bought this router from centrecom during covid lockdown for $250 with free shipping.

  • I'm currently with TPG NFC. I'm using TPG provided huawei modem and connected with DSL-AC68U as the router (flashed merlin RT-AC68U).

Thinking of switching to ABB or superloop so that I can use DSL-AC68U as modem/router.

Would I be able to use this as an AiMesh node?

    • +1

RT-AX56U can be used as mesh node. If it was me I would configure RT-AX56U as my main router & RT-AC68U as mesh node.

      • can I use my DSL-AC68U as modem and main mesh router?

        • DSL-AC68U can be used as main mesh router & the modem is turned off.

          • +1

@Twix: so the mesh function needs the modem to be turned off. OK, thanks

            • @clothoo: The modem is done by NBN HFC connection device.
