  • Anyone knows if this can run Kodi smoothly?

    • +3

I got the 65 in version. It seems to run kodi fine for me. I use plex via kodi as the plex app has audio issues.

  • +20

This i found if it helps
Here's a step-by-step on how I got Kodi v17.6 running on my TCL 4k TV
Go to the TCL app store and install Kodi (it will be version 15.1 I think)
Go to the TCL app store and install ES File Explorer
On a PC, download the latest apk for Kodi v17.6
In ES File Explorer on your TV, enable 'remote management' through the menu (if you're not sitting next to your TV with your PC, make a note of the IP and port displayed by the remote management function)
Use an FTP program on the PC where you downloaded the Kodi apk to connect to the FTP address given by the ES File Explorer remote management function
Transfer the apk file over to the Downloads folder on your TV (you will see it in the directory structure once you successfully connect via FTP)
Go back to your TV and use ES File Explorer to navigate to the Downloads folder, click on the Kodi apk file you just transferred, and click "install"
If everything goes according to plan, the install will update the existing Kodi app to the new version.
Open Kodi on your TV and the update will finalize making changes
Enjoy your newly-updated Kodi with all the bells and whistles it brings to your 4k TV

    • +2

I don't think this relevant to this TV as you just download Kodi 17.6 straight from the Playstore on the TV

I purchased 3x TCL TV's late last year (65" 75" 85") and all have been great with Kodi and the Foxtel Go Addon.

      • +16

Why all the different sizes? Did you make a TV pyramid?

        • 🤣

        • Haha, They are in different rooms, so i needed different sizes.

    • +1

Go to the TCL app store and install ES File Explorer

And then have a good hard look at yourself as you just installed some bloatware.
Unless you have the Pro version, ES File Explorer is one step away from full on malware. NEVER install it, NEVER, there is no need to, it used to be decent, now it's just spam junk, has been for a couple of years.
Total Commander is far superior, use that. It has been a long time since I have used either, but Total Commander was also far easier to navigate with a TV remote.

      Total Commander - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ghisler.an…

      X-plore is another good one - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.lonelycatg…

  • My boyfriend gave me some money as a gift to buy a membership, and I just tried to sign up so I could buy this tv, but alas their payment page is down :(
    Maybe tomorrow!

Also discussed in passing here: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/549650

May be worth asking Costco what they would do should a similar warranty issue arise.

    • +1

well, I believe the best way to avoid from this situation is actually buy 2 at once. so if one doa, you still have a second chance. if the firdt is ok, just return the second sealed.

this should give yoy 99.99% chance to get a working tv at this price.

      • +1

Fair to say most TVs are heading this way. My 75 inch Sony that cost a little over 3k about 18 months ago has been seen for nearly half that these days.

Great price but it's reflected in the quality of the TV also. Rather than deprive someone else of the deal, take your chances on ONE. If it's no good, there will be another deal or price reduction on these sized TVs soon enough.

There's only so much TV we can watch, I'm sure you'll survive.

  • I thought you had to advertise HDR rating. Does anyone know the HDR rating on this? 500 600 800?

    • +1

I have this model and I don't actually know the rating - but the HDR is pretty crappy - it's very dim impossible to get very bright. In saying that though - the rest of the TV has been pretty great especially for the price - the Android TV system works really well - there's a few known issue's with quick boot so be prepared to wait about a minute every time you want to start the TV but you get used to it and it's really not that big a deal.

(I got side tracked - point is HDR isn't great - but the TV is pretty good especially at this price).

      • +1

so be prepared to wait about a minute every time you want to start the TV

        That's ridiculous.

      • quick boot for me on my 50inch version is very quick. It is faster then my older "dumb" tv

    • Expect it to be entry level, it's a $600 TV

  • The 43.inch model is so dim it's barely watchable.

    • Which one?

  • -2

I bought TCL 55" P8S. Upgraded model of P8M in $516 from TGG couple of months back. Still good price i think. However in P8M you cant install kayo, Prime and disney app's from play store.

    • However in P8M you cant install kayo, Prime and disney app's from play store.

Is that because it's an older model?

The 2020 ones are now out in the stores.

      • +1

        Yes its an older model.

    • I find that odd. I purchased a 50inch version p8m from jb in April and it had prime pre installed. I have foxtel sports and not interested in Disney so no idea about those.

    • +1

I have the p8m and I have Prime and Disney apps installed from the Play store.

    • +2

I have the p8m. And yes you can install kayo Disney etc. The tv has had a firmware update

      • When i purchased my P8S in March/April this year, it didn't have prime, kayo. It wasnt showing in play store either. I contacted TCL and they updated my software and said they only released those apps in this model onwards.

  • Or
TCL 50" P715 4K QUHD ANDROID LED TV
50P715 $592 plus delivery or pick up @TGG commercial

    Decisions..

    • which one did you end up getting? I am also tempted at that 50P715 at that pricepoint but still wanted a 55inch screen :(

  • +4

$595 @ Bing Lee (no membership required)
    https://www.binglee.com.au/tcl-55p8m-55-quhd-tv-ai-in

    • selected stores only …so finding it in stock could be an issue

    • Checked their website and talked to a rep. Seems like there's no stock left.

  • Might not work properly connecting laptop via hdmi to tv, had to return it because of that. Good tv otherwise

    • What issue did you have? I have the 50 P8M and and using it right now. When I connect it to my work laptop I don't get full 4:4:4 chroma as the laptop doesn't support HDMI2.0. Connected to my personal PC I do get 4:4:4 although the picture is still not great - but I put up with the poor picture because I love the huge screen and high resolution. There's nothing I would consider "not working properly" - just "not very good looking".

      • ye did not not show the full screen and also when watching youtube it was very slow and laggy..I didnt know how to put the right settings maybe… I am happy with my Samsung everything works great

      • I need a 75" 4K @60hz 4:4:4 TV with input lag of < 15ms so that I could use it as a macBookPro monitor for school-work and work-work, not gaming. Must be less than $2K.

  • +1

Good TV but not a great deal. This is a normal price for this TV, having investigated it a few months ago when i recommend it to my mum.

  • I've been tossing up between this model and the TCL Qled model. Anyone have any opinions on the matter?

    • I don't have either but spent a lot of time looking at them both in jbhifi and talking to the reps there. The p8m I found to have noticeably bad judder on the 1080p content that ALL the other tvs were playing smoothly(motion is not smooth, it 'steps' even on slowish nature doco panning scenes), something the store reps also noticed. The qled looked really great though but was out of my budget.

      • Keep in mind they will often setup the cheap TV's to look bad to encourage you to spend the extra money.

That said, I have the 50P8M and the Hisense 75R6 and the Hisense looks heaps better - despite them both being base model TV's. If I was in the market for another then I would get the Hisense rather than the TCL.

        • What would they do in setup to sabotage every p8m model in the store though? The Hisense range in store didn't suffer the judder, was just p8m models of all sizes (and ffalcon also by TCL). I mean the PQ was great but that judder… In the end as you said I went for a 2nd hand Hisense and so glad I did, I would have really noticed the motion judder had I gone for a new p8m.

The TCL qled has double the motion smoothing of the p8m though so inclined to think it doesnt suffer this issue and that's what I noticed in store

  • Got the 50 inch version (50P8M) a few weeks ago and will be returning it. Quite slow to turn on, operate apps, and even Chromecast was slow or error prone.

Got Philips for $550 at TGG and TV response/casting much better so far.

    https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/philips-50-inches126cm-uhd-le…

    • Im very interested to hear more about the Philips in terms of what you like better to the TCL as I have had my eye on the 55inch model but put off by 12 month warranty.

      • The 50' Phillips is the one that was on the aldi sale for $400 about a month ago. I purchased off TGG commercial site for $420, but returned unopened due to bad reviews on the bad UI and the fact it includes ads that I didn't see prior to pulling the trigger (TGG won't refund if box is opened). Purchased the p8m instead for $480 due to android tv built in (no other cost to get Chromecast or an android box etc) and 3 year warranty compared to 12 months

        • TGG commercial 55inch of $508 is what I was looking at but as you said warranty and the operating system are big killers on the Philips tv as there's so little information or reviews to say whether its any good or being kept up to date

      • Warranty is always 2 years (consumer law) so 12 month tagline is deceptive IMO.

Prefer Chromecast over interacting with a TV so I'm not super keen on software updates. What am I missing out on anyway?

        • Android tv has Chromecast built in as well, so works the same just don't have to pay for more hardware. Not sure what your missing out on tbh, probably just personal preference on the UI/warranty and likely all pretty similar for this budget price range as can't compare the screens and limited reviews on the Philips - can't get too picky when you arent paying thousands of dollars.

  • Why does this have so many upvotes compared to the Aldi 65" 4k?

TCL is a well respected budget brand tv with a 3 year warranty.

Reviews on Aldi tv's have been generally poor to average at best and usually have only 1 year warranty

      • +1

TCL is a well respected budget brand tv

I thought TCL is practically a no-name brand, on par with Aldi's own brand. TCL TVs are routinely the cheapest ones and the reviews are as bad as they can get

A review from that site on p8m:

I have the 85 p8m. It takes forever to boot up…which I was told was a known fault…after I bought it. Reboots constantly on all apps, randomly. Instant On does not work. I have also had service technicians come to my house 3 times already… And still the same issues, as well have changed all the boards out. The technicians are coming again this week. I have asked for a refund and TCL is not wanting to. These are all facts and no feelings….good luck to anyone who purchases one.

I'm not saying Aldi is a great "TV brand", of course, but at least you can try and return if you don't like it, no?

      • +1

Nope TCL warranty is as good as useless, 12 months and still won't respond to my emails or phone calls.

        • +1

Would that not be the case with a costco membership? I thought they wore the warranty side of things on a lot of electronics.

        • +1

I think it's a hit or miss, in my case, I was having issues with ARC and emailed them and they replied with a firmware upgrade within a couple of hours

    • +1

the Aldi TV's don't have a great reputation.

  • +1

Love mine, got for around $550 via Videopro/eBay a few months back. Main complaint I have is that despite the specs sheet, 5ghz WiFi does not work at all. Software on the panel is up to date so I've just been working around it with an Apple TV. Not a deal breaker for me but worth knowing I guess.

  • +1

How is TCL as a brand? We're not fussy, since we've been using a soniq for years, but its been randomly turning off and on lately so might replace it.

    Is the menu speedy?

    • +1

Zero issues with my 65" P8M. Apps run fine with minimal lag

Some of the best value TVs you can buy…in the USA.
      TCL Australia, meh

  • +1

Has anyone been able to install Mobdro on a TCL?

And yes, you do have to wait a minute for these things to start up.

  • +1

I’ve got this TV from TGG. It’s great!

  • +1

What is Cosco's return policy on TV's?

In Costco USA it was 90 days return policy but not very sure about Australia.

  • +1

This one or Samsung TU8000 Crystal UHD? I'm getting TU8000 on employee portal for $890 delivered (without $50 promo code)

  • +1

I'd get the xiomai 65 inch 120hz oled TV. When it arrives.

    • +1

Rofl. These 2 tvs (and prices) don't even compare in the slightest

      • +2

That's right.. but you getting the best at the best price brand new, that cannot be said for any other oled TV can it now.

And it's not like you'll be buying a TV every few years right.

        Right

        https://www.gsmarena.com/xiaomi_release_65_inch_4k_oled_mi_t…

But you gotta admit bits gorgeous, even the base looks better then lg's.

        • +1

Is it confirmed as coming to Australia?

          • +1

@Binchicken22: Most likely, probably in JB hi-fi,as they now sell xiomai phones but sadly not the official xiomai au store, that is the TV side of things.

I'd expect with the virus, no idea as everything's delayed.

    • -3

what price can be expected to pay?

  • I bought this same TV from Costco for $499.99 back in March. The TV is fine. Sometimes going into the Android system freezes up and won't load but I just unplug it and plug it back in and it's fine.

    • +1

You get what you pay for live with it.

      • No. No he doesn't.

      • Actually the same night I posted this comment an update was available and it has been perfect since.

  • -1

hey guys, this is not out of stock.

Epping store has 20, Ringwood has 40, docklands is out of stock.

I just got one from Epping at 8pm today.

and the price is $589 in store.

    • You drove all that way for this TV geez.

      • -2

you go wait for your xiomai tv for 6k lol

        • 6k, I didn't know $2500 was 6k, but with those eyes of yours I'm sure you'll have red k breakfast serial.

          oh

And did you drive all that way for this TV geez.

          Hope it was worth it
