  • there is a 40" for $319, I'm looking to pick up a couple of 40-42" for my kids for xmas in July, anyone know if these are ok?

    • +16

Pay a little bit more and get a TCL, the reviews are a lot better.

      • +3

3 year warranty with TCL as well

        • -2

Lifetime warranty for ANY tv at Costco.

          • +1

            @TheSnyper: Huh? Is that true?

          • +1

@TheSnyper: I don't think this is true anymore. The TVs and most electrical goods at Costco say that normal manufacturer warranty applies.

I bought a TV ~6yrs ago from Costco. It developed alot of faults after around 3yrs, which was soon after Costco changed it's policy. I took it back to Costco and they were not happy that I was returning it and said that only manufacturer warranty applies. I had to politely inform them that that policy did not exist when I purchased the item.

            • -1

@PCHammond: I bought 3 tvs 5 years ago and was told then about the lifetime warranty. I believe in the US they may have cancelled the offer but I have not seen anything to say it doesn't still apply in Australia.

I just remembered, the only condition was that your membership must never lapse during the period.

Even their warranty page suggests there is no reason to think it doesn't apply anymore …
              https://www.costco.com.au/member-care/refunds-and-return/wha…

              • @TheSnyper: Its changed since then.

All TVs now say "Manufacturers Warranty 1/2/3 Year + ACL Rights", and it has been this way for a few years

      • +3

        Or a HiSense!

      • I have the TCL. It's nice.

        • But it's currently around $1000 more.

          • @mattyman: new 2020 50" TCL is $795

      • How much do TCL Android TVs go for?

    • I've seen 40" 's for $200.

    • I just got a 42" Blaupunkt Android TV for $319 at Officeworks. Kogan have a pre-order for one at $329 too.

  • -6

What version of Android does it come with?

    • +2

It's "Android TV", not the regular version of Android. The latest version of "Android TV" is 10.0 released in December 2019 so it's most likely that.

        • +27

Why didn't you bold the word regular? Shame on you.

          • +6

            @shiny1:

Why didn't you bold the word regular?

            key on keyboard broke…

            • @jv: so both Shift and Capslock broke on your keyboard !!

why on earth anyone would want or care about that is beyond me

            @giventofly:

why on earth anyone would want or care about that is beyond me

less limits on which apps you can load.

      • +7

Would very much doubt this TV would be running Android TV 10.0.

      • +2

Ha, that is not how Android works. Since 10 came out only six months ago, there is every chance it’s running something two years old.

        • More than likely. But with that being said, I don't think it matters so much with Android TV.

          • @PurchaseAnxiety: And even less so on a TV as opposed to media box.

          • @PurchaseAnxiety: Agreed.

Screenshot looks the same as what I have on my Voda TV after the major update a while back. Brought the new menu screen (which I don’t like, but eh whatever).

I’ll take a look at the version number and post back. I want to say it’s Android 9.0 which is actually pretty good.

  • Could not be better timing. I only just learned about sous vide cooking for steaks but don't want to spend $150+ for a kit. Great deal/price.

    • For steaks just use BPA free ziplock bags. We only use big silicon re-useable or vacuum sealer for big/awkward chunks of meat. The sous vide machine here looks decent for the price, probably similar to the Kogan one.

      • +2

BPA free bags potentially contain other currently less well known toxic products. Better to avoid combining food, heat and plastic as much as possible.

        • This is my approach. Given plastic's low melting point, I'm always cautious to combine plastic and heat. However, I don't know much myself.

  • +2

Great price for the Sony headphone.

  • Is this the same one?

If so, this is a $30 price increase, not a bargain.

    • It's weird because it looks and reads the same but in their ad it says $100 less than last time.

    • +4

I don't think it is the same. That deal didn't have Android TV.

    • You could ask them for a jv deal..

      • +1

That deal would be a dud

  • -8

Cheap as chips 65 inch TV … I wonder how many corners the manufacturer had to cut to make it this cheap

Even if I was in a very tight budget I would never buy a Aldi TV I would rather put money aside and save up for years and buy a decent TV instead.

    • +4

Looks like a rebrand of the EKO TV from Big W

      • lol true, the big W one is cheaper too

        • +3

Bought the EKO TV, it's way better than the price suggests. Picture and sound surprising sound are good. The remote and Android TV are excellent.
Edit: Looks like the EKO is on run out sale at Big W, it's not available online and nowhere near me, so if you want a TV like this, Aldi may be your best option.

          • +1

@uzz30: Yep bought the eko when it was on sale for less than 600 and my thoughts are exactly the same.

For the price the picture and sound are surprisingly good and Android TV works well especially after the patches to fix issues with prime.

Minor annoyance is menu sounds can't be turned off.

    • +22

I dont agree with this at all.

If youre on a budget, you're on a budget. The additional money saved could go to other things instead.

We used to not have much money and we bought an Aldi TV, which was perfectly fine.

Unless Aldi tv quality has nosedived lately, someone on a more limited budget should not be turned away.

      • +2

Exactly. Above comment seems to be written by someone who doesn't need to be on a tight budget.

      • +3

Totally agree. I spent $500 on a 65" ALDI tv like 2 years ago and it hasn't skipped a beat. Yeah the blacks aren't the blackest but the picture is fine and I haven't really felt a need to upgrade. 4K YouTube looks totally good enough to me.

        • I bought an ALDI TV, the first few months to 1 year was great! after 1-2 years it took forever to start up, switching channel is also a pain! now it sit aside only for kid's dvd/bluray. YMMV!

      • +2

The issue is more to do with Aldi tvs are rebadged and can differ significantly between models/releases. Some are great bang for buck, others are junk. Perspective and how you're gonna use it play a big part in this though.

    • +6

      Is that you Harvey?

    • +5

Don't agree with this comment at all either. I bought a 65" Aldi TV over 3 years ago for $799, still going strong. Has no smart features (didnt expect at the time), but its now an alfresco TV.

I've upgraded theatre to a 75" Aldi TV for $999 on a recent deal, isn't Android but has wifi with netflix and youtube. Its not fantastic, but for the cheapest 75" on the market, its great value for money. Unless you're paying double, the Aldi TVs are on par with all baseline versions of name brands. The Samsung 4100 was about $1400 and gave no improvement. The TCL was about $1299 and the only advantage for me is it had Android TV OS, but xiaomi mi box or chromecast would fix that (if thats what you're after).

If I had $1000 sitting around, possibly I would buy a 'good' samsung or sony, but the difference for most people is negligable IMHO.

    • -6

There was a news story on BBC that the "corners cut" are each Aldi store only gets a very number in so a lot of people go there and but other stuff. It is a classic 1800's breach of bait advertising consumer laws blah blah blah. Oh dear they don't have any more (they only have 2 per store) but I am here now so we may as well get some home branded efficient German genetically modified groceries.

  • Has someone tried the Aldi wireless camera? Is it any good ?

    • +2

I have it. Don't recommmend it. Takes too long to load the video streaming on the phone. Plus the battery drains way too quickly if you put the sensitivity up. Putting the sensitivity low helps with the battery but then it takes too long to detect movement and when you get notified, the person is already gone and the image didn't capture anyone. I contacted Cocoon telling then how long it takes to stream the video and they said it's because my connection was low and that I should move it closer to my router. I said the router sits about 20 metres from the camera but they bascially said just to move it even closer. Do they expect me to move the router outside?! Customer service was pretty poor.

Unfortunately I lost the receipt so I could never return it to Aldi.

  • +1

Yeah, let's all get the meat grinder

    • +3

I have a free meat grinder in my mouth huge donkey teeth

      • +1

in my mouth huge donkey teeth

Did you go to the vet instead of a dentist?

      • +1

you'll be a hit on Grindr

    • Yes daddy.

    • +1

Just remember to check it because it's too heavy for carry on.

    • Huh, but don't you already use one?

    • But where does the meat go?

    • Already married

  • +2

Looks like a rebrand of the EKO TV from Big W. Note the same remote.

I have the 55" equivalent and it's a great TV for the price. Just had an issue with the bluetooth controller, it seems to disconnect more than it connects. If you don't care about the voice searching option. You can just turn off the bluetooth and use it as a normal IR remote.

  • Anyone got insight into the quality of the Soundbar?

    • It looks similar to the one I have, but mine didn't come with a sub. I just got it to improve the sound on my bedroom tv so it doesn't use the inbuilt speakers and it fulfils that job well enough. Nothing amazing though.

  • Just wondering, is a dedicated slow cooker worth a place in the kitchen? Cause these days a lot of multi-cookers for example (Instant Pot, Crock Pot, etc) have the slow cooker function included into them.

    • I've replaced my dedicated slow and pressure cookers with a multi-cooker and happy with it.

      • Same here.

@MysticalWok you should be fine with a multi-cooker.

      • The pressure cooker looks nice for making lentils. Should I buy that or multi-cooker?

        Which multi-cooker are you using?

  • +1

Might want to have a look at the recall notice thrown in there if you bought one of the stick vacuums in February/March.

  • would the soundbar be decent enough for just general use or would it be better to just get one from JB/Harvey etc.

  • +2

Is the meat grinder any good?

    • combine with this deal?

    • Also wondering this…

  • Digging that 3in1 slowcooker

  • What's the thing below the phone next to the powerboard?

    • +3

It’s a “cable and powerboard tidy unit” for $11.99.

Hint: if you’re on a mobile device, request the desktop version of the site. The Images are much clearer and you can zoom in to see the details.

      • Great tip on the zoom, thanks heaps.

    • "Cable and Powerboard Tidy Unit". You put a powerboard in there and it reduces (visual) clutter from all the cables. Has grooves on the top to put phones in while charging.

Wouldn’t the TCL 65P8S be better than this TV? Couple of hundred more thought

Report your own comment…mods won't see your edit.

    • They usually just discount it until they sell. Never seen anything that's really overstocked and never sold.

    • Association with ALDI Removed.

    • +1

I asked this same question at my local store and the answer was “COVID19”. Stuff being imported in from overseas is not making it here, hence why all my local stores have half the special buys section cleared of shelves/stock.

  • Is there a phone on offer?

    • +1

      Yes, Nokia 2.2 $119.

      • Ooooh…
