It is a bit lack of ports for so call a dock.

  • +3

4k 30hz why do these even exist.

    • +1

Plenty of people use 24" or 27" monitors at home or at work.

      • -2

And decide to ruin their eyes with 30Hz refresh rate.

        • +2

24" monitors are typically 1920x1080 or 1920x1200, better 27" ones are 2560x1440. At those resolutions you can run your monitor at 60Hz, possibly higher.

In any case 30Hz will not ruin your eyes. It just means fast-moving things like your mouse cursor will appear jerky.

          • @eug: during COVID people have taken their laptops and work from home, but a lot users where I work don't have docks, this products fits a segment. Also refresh ay 1920x1080 is more inline with monitors some people might be using ….. no-one at my work has 4K montors at home.

            • -1

@garage sale: But you might upgrade to 4K monitor later and will have to toss this one in the bin like I had to do for my dock when I bought a 4K monitor. This ATEN product is a deal at $19 no way for $59

              • @InternetExplorer: Or you might not. You need to look outside the tech bubble you live in - there are plenty of people who don't live and breathe computers who have no desire for a large monitor. 24" is plenty, and there's no real benefit to 4K at that size.

will have to toss this one in the bin like I had to do for my dock when I bought a 4K monitor.

You're going to have to toss the one you bought in the bin when you buy a 5K monitor. Why did you waste your money?

Or maybe you don't plan on buying a 5K monitor anytime soon, just like how there are many people who have no plans to buy a 4K monitor anytime soon?

              • +1

@InternetExplorer: the latops we have at work won't do 4K at 60hz, they are i5, and no GPU, sure if people have $150+ buy a better dock, but with COVID many people are just using their work laptops from home and 1080p monitors …..

          • @eug:

In any case 30Hz will not ruin your eyes. It just means fast-moving things like your mouse cursor will appear jerky.

Whatever suits you. I can watch a movie at 30Hz, but can't work or play.

For some reason you're looking for reasons to defend this product, while it has a common, widely discussed problem: Some people (not you, alright) want to use 4k at more than 30Hz, because fast-moving things like your mouse cursor will appear jerky. And… it's a fact. Just like this thing costs $59.

            • @bouncybear:

              Whatever suits you.

1920x1200 at 60Hz suits many people. There are very likely far, far more 1920x1200/1080 60Hz monitors out there than 4K monitors. A typical office building would very likely contain 99% 1920x1080 monitors.

For some reason you're looking for reasons to defend this product,

Do read my first comment. I was replying to bangmango who said he doesn't know why 4k30 hubs exist. Nowhere in my reply, or subsequent replies, did I say anything about this product.

4k30Hz hubs exist because there are plenty of people who have no need for, have no interest in, and will never buy a 4K monitor. They're perfectly happy with a 24" FHD monitor to read their emails and browse the web.

Some people (not you, alright) want to use 4k at more than 30Hz, because fast-moving things like your mouse cursor will appear jerky. And… it's a fact.

Sure. While there are lots of people who want to use 4K at more than 30Hz, there are far more people who absolutely don't care about 4K and are perfectly satisfied plugging their work laptop that can only do 2K60 into their 24" FHD monitor at home to run Excel, Zoom, and Outlook.

Just like this thing costs $59.

I use 4K60 everywhere and I wouldn't buy this for $59. That is why I did not upvote it nor defend it.

  • "Supports 4K resolutions – up to 3840 x 2160 @ 30Hz"

    I'll pass

    • +2

      Pass-through

  • Looks great, needs more usb ports, maybe.
    What does this mean
"Note that some devices are ‘keyed’ to the original charger – as long as you use it, this device will work."

    • Some devices only charge with the chargers they ship with ie if they’re no connected directly (like through this dock) they may not charge.

      • Huh, how annoying, as bad as ink cartridges.
        TIL, thanks

  • +1

Looks a bit expensive for what it offers, but maybe thats just me.

  • I think people need to get a grip and realise that not every dock needs a stack of ports, sometimes you just need a cheap compact one that. Aten do plenty of other docks with more ports and features.

    • +3

Fair enough but for sixty bucks it’s not mich of a bargain.

      • +1

What's another name brand compact USB-C dock with 60W power delivery and Dex compatibility that you could recommend that's cheaper?

        • -2
          • @InternetExplorer: without USB you need to plug mouse and keyboard into laptop so might awell just plug monitor into the HDMI, thjese docks are so you can move your laptop around, but when at a desk with one cable you get monitor, keyboard and mouse.

        • I don’t accept that I should have to meet that demand in order to justify my position that this doesn’t constitute a bargain. It has some good features, fine but for $60 it’s no better than a reasonable price (if that’s all you need in a dock).

          • @0jay: I'm sure you don't, Karen

            • @dav3: You can be sure or you can doubt, but honey pie ydonknowshit.

      • native dell dock is over $150 ….. so this isn't bad.

Anybody link to a better deal ?

        • +6

I recently bought this, refurb but $97 delivered. Looking to use it with my Thinkpad E14 from the deal last week (when that arrives).

          https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Kensington-4K-HDMI-USB-C-Hub-Doc…

          • 4k60 via DP
          • 4k30 via HDMI
          • 3x USB3.0 A ports
          • 2x USB-C ports (one for output, one for usage)
          • Headphone/mic jack
          • Ethernet

Bulky compared to the above but I'd consider this to be a bargain.
