Samsung G9 49" QLED Ultrawide Curved Gaming Monitor G-Sync 240HZ - $2799 w/ Bonus Samsung Portable SSD T7 500GB Grey ($188) @ HN

1170

This is a pretty pricy monitor, however the premium is worth it. You can preorder it for the 30/7 and will get a bonus 500GB Samsung external ssd, which is the best price and offer out of any online stores offering this monitor, plus is easy to file a claim if something is wrong with the monitor (which has been the case due to callbacks of this model in the US)

These are unboxing and testimonial videos, not reviews.

        Here's a technical review of the 32" G7.

        • -5

Wake me when rtings check it out

The subpixel layout on the last Samsung VA I had made text look terrible and games look pixelated as hell.

          • +4

@MagnamoniousRex: This is as detailed a technical analysis as what RTings does.

There's been a big push in the community to get a number of reviewers up to scratch with their benchmarking standards, including RTings, who had to make huge changes to their response time testing recently.

Consider the results shown here to be as good, and reflective of an exceptional entertainment and competitive monitor with a few minor black uniformity issues.

Regarding sub-pixel layout, there are non-English reviews already covering this, but I don't have them at hand.

  • Man I wish they had this offer for the G7.

  • +5

I've got the previous model (the 5120x1440) and it's a mint screen.

    Edit/ some wally doesn't agree but hasn't got a reply apparently 😂

    • +1

I think this one is more curved though right? Whilst I think CRG9 would be ideal for productivity/work too (I do alot of spreadsheet work beyond when researching deals), the G9 seems to have more of a curve.

      • Yep this one is 1000R vs 1800R (CRG9)

I use my CRG9 for productivity (coder) and love it.

      • Yes, this one has a deeper curve. I'd love it but I'm happy with the $1700 I paid for mine (factory refurb)

Turned out to only be select batches, likely due to defects with the plastic frames seperating from the panel.

  • Imagine playing on this. I'm tempted to switch over from a triple monitor setup.

    • +1

Imagine the GPU you'll need to run some of these newer games that are coming in ultrawiiiiiiide and ultra settings.

      • And at 240Hz

        • SLI 2080 RTX TI oughta do it?

          • +3

@4foxache: You probably need to wait for 3080 Ti at least unless you use potato quality graphic setting.

          • @4foxache: I'm skeptical of the support for NV link/SLI.

I'm guessing 3080 RTX Ti will get around mid/low 100s for upcoming AAAs at full resolution and highest quality. So many pixels, definitely a display you'd end up coming for 5+ years.

            • +2

@Caped Baldy: Wishing DLSS 2.0 would be implemented in more future and existing games soon.

I had triple 27" QHD 2560*1440 Dell IPS monitors and replaced then with a single Samsung CRG9 5120x1440. Couldn't be happier.
I've been waiting for this G9 to be available. Definitely going to upgrade.
      Thanks OP.

      • That's interesting, have been contemplating whether to go 27" + 34" + 27" set up or go for a CRG9. What prompted you to move away from triple set up?

        • Sorry for delayed response - I found turning my neck too much for the far left and right sides of the two outer screens wasn't particulalrly comfortable. So I would mainly use the half closest to the centre screen. That meant I was really just using the equivalent of two 27" screen real estate.

      • nice! let me know if you want to sell your CRG9 :)

      • Interesting that you plan to upgrade given the change in curvature and upgrade to 240hz. I wouldn't have thought it to be a worthwhile upgrade unless you really need those features.

I'm toying with upgrading my CHG90 (the 1080p version) but honestly it still serves me so well… and I think even my 2080Ti would struggle with the G9.

        • +1

I do undretsand what you mean, I love the CRG9. My only gripe is that the curve of the 49" (1800R) is probably a bit flat for me and I'm hoping to reduce the need to turn my head (the reason I moved away from the triple 27" setup in the first place). I'm a bit concerned that the 1000R curve of the G9 MIGHT skew the optics of the desktop/office work I do, but hoping that won't be the case.
In terms of gaming, I guess it's going to depend partly on the games you play, but the pixel count is less than 4K, so the 2080Ti shouldn't be struggling.

  • +1

I've already seen this monitor have promotional prices of $2100-$2300 in other regions, likewise the 27" G7 with a price at $750, so sit tight and wait for better deals to roll in.

I'd imagine it'll take a little longer for the G9 to dip, but 20% or more compared to this deal is worth the wait.

Aside from LG in recent times, monitors never tend to sell at MSRP, and with good reason: those prices are set early in the product development process, before economies of scale kick in with estimated order volumes.

    • Hey mate, which regions did you see those promotional deals?

      • They're no longer current, but the G7 deals were in South Korea, Europe and the UK, while the G9 deal was in the Philippines or Singapore, I think.

  • +3

I'm loving my earlier model CHG90 (typing on it now).. yeah, "Only" 1080 and 144hz Freesync 2, but it's so beautiful to work on and use for gaming. lol

    • +1

      1080 tho

      • +1

Yep and only $1300. Substantially cheaper and can't care less the difference between 1440 vs 1080 when you are playing.

        • -4

          So a waste of $1,300 then ;)

    • +2

You shouldn't type on your monitor if it's not touch screen.

      </jokes>

In all seriousness I love my CHG90. Sure, in hindsight, higher res might be nice but it's also already a great experience both for work and for fun. Had it a few years and it's served me well.

Is your spine made of glass? If not you'll find it's fine.

    • +1

This one has 1000R curve so there should be very minimal left and right turn - I am using one with 1800R and is fine.

Basically the same as 2 x 27" 1440p screen - so if you are used to multi-monitor setup then is fine.

Check out the AOC 49" if this is too pricy but you are considering something. Currently using that monitor and it's a banger too.

    https://www.skycomp.com.au/aoc-agon-ag493ucx-49-120hz-uwqhd-…

    • I'm a noob at these extra wide monitors…. does it take 2 separate displayport inputs inputs so you can use it like a traditional dual monitor Windows 10 setup where windows will see "2 monitors" and you can have certain things display on the primary (right half for example) and some stuff on the other half which is like a second monitor? If you know what I mean…

Then for gaming can you 'centre' it like a single input experience?

      • +11

Hey bud, there are two ways to do it.

Method one is just plug in one computer DP input. Your computer can deal with a 5120 x 3440 resolution no problem, your desktop just scales to fit.

However, that's pretty much the ideal size to handle 3 or 4 windows so it's worth using some special Microsoft software like 'Fancy Zones' to allow you to create zones on your desktop where your windows will snap to instead of manually sizing them.

Gaming is great on this full screen mode, really immersive. I am currently playing RDR2 and it works great. Nowadays I find most games have great compatability. Some you may need to mess with a configuration file to make them scale properly. Others just render on a smaller part of the screen - e.g. some indie games just play in normal 16:9

Most of these monitors also include a 'Picture by Picture' (PBP) mode as well, where you can display two inputs. In that case it is emulating two separate monitors essentially.

I do this by using one half for my work laptop (over USB-C) and one half for my home computer (DP). The AOC lets you switch USB inputs between the two comptuers so I can use my mouse and keyboard for both. Sometimes I use one half for my Nintendo Switch over HDMI while having my PC on the other.

However, it is also possible to connect one PC to both inputs and use it like two monitors in PBP mode (with these 49" monitors, they are pretty much identical to having two 27" monitors next to each other, just with no bezel).

There are advantages and disadvantages to this. If you want to 'fullscreen' two videos for example, you need to do this, as Windows can't handle fullscreening multiple windows on one screen, no matter how big it is.

Downsides are that most PBP modes feck with the colours a bit so both screens will look different. Also, not good for gaming on one side of the screen while working on the other, as you lose Freesync / Gsync compatability in that mode.

        Hope that helps.

        • Great reply, thanks that clears it up.

So it's a decision of use some software to manage the real estate or use 2 cables but gaming will be on one half…… hmmmm

          • @Skramit: Yeah. To be clear as well, you can just switch between those at any point using the monitor's controls.

The AOC comes with a handy little remote. So I switch on my laptop, PC and the PBP mode in the morning. And at 5pm~ I just set the main input to my PC, change the resolution on the PC (it doesn't detect it automatically unfortunately) and good to go.

I wouldn't use 2 cables for input on a single PC except for some really niche use cases, e.g. two full screen videos as mentioned, or watching something full screen on one side and working on the other.

            • +1

@OpenHand: Hmmm but being able to view two Linux ISO's at the same time………

        • Hmm reading the specs it says USB C and HDMI limited to 1080p is that correct? Otherwise this monitor would be a great alternative

          • @wiselyfoolish: The AOC monitor? A lot of 49" monitors have odd restrictions on inputs other than display port which is usually the best way to hook in.

On the AOC, my USB-C can't do the full 5120 x 1440 res, but it can do either 3840x1080 (not ideal) or 2560x1440 no problem. So I only ever use my USB-C inputs at 1440p. Likewise my Switch outputs at 1080p so I just stretch that to fill one half at 2560x1440.

There is a workaround for USB-C laptops, which is to have a good dock that has a high quality DP output (not all work the same way) and connect it that way.

      • There's also software that you can use to load specific apps into specific virtual desktops or windows that are split on the monitor anyway you like.
        Checkout:
        - DisplayFusion
        - Divvy
        - MaxTo
        - Virtual Display Manager (VDM)

    • Is this the same monitor as the OP has listed, but for $2150 instead?

        Last gens.

        • Fair 'nuff.

I'm not in the market for either monitor - perhaps should have bought one last FY for WFH instead of the 21:9 screen that I ended up getting, so I could have claimed the deduction - so I'm not going to look in to the too deeply. Nonetheless I am still curious; is there a TL;DR for what the new model brings to the table (ahaha) compared to the previous gen?

          • @Astronaut Joe: the CRG9 is still pretty new. The G9 Odyssey has some spicy extras like a higher refresh rate etc.

21:9 monitors are still great, no doubt about it.

      • +1

Samsung EPP had it for 1699. Not sure if still available.

        • I just had a look and its out of stock now :'( If I had known about this I would have bought it!

          • +1

@drakarn_123: I shudder to present paying more as a good option but fwiw Bing Lee and office works (if you find stock) have last gens for $1999. If you don't want the extra curvature / 240 Hz (limit to 144 last gen) / G-sync (CRG9 comes with Free Sync + Nvidia has a compatibility mode) then could be worth considering.

  • It's MKBHD certified. Now just need an equally dope computer to push these pixels.

  • budget around $1200-1400 for replacing my 2x 27 inch FHD dell, not too much gaming, just for work.
    are they good?

    https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/Monitors/25plus-inch/739…

    • The Acer Nitro would give you the same real estate as your two 27" monitors in a single screen.
The Samsung has slightly higher resolution, but isn't as wide (which you might prefer).
I think you might be better to trial these in store if you can.

  • +2

Honestly, my problem is I don't know what I want.

I know I want and need a second screen after selling one.

But do I want 4K because right now I mainly watch film and game via PS4 Pro?

But I plan on starting PC gaming again - why couldn't LG just release the 48CX OLED?

    • +1

i think its better have to separate screens

-A big screen 4k TV for movie/TV/Console gaming
-1 or 2 Monitor (whichever type you choose ie ultrawide or whatever resolution..

I don't think watching movies for 2 hrs while sitting on your computer chair is all that comfortable.

      • +1

I have a 55" OLED - I don't get to use it though. Kids and wife take it and I get it when they're in bed, lol.
