Sorry, have to neg you OP.

I remember trying to buy masks on Amazon from these types of sellers (99% sure this seller was one of them) and they all ended up being fake. As in, I never received any masks. And the tracking info I got given was fake too.

Luckily Amazon has the A-to-Z refund policy so I could get my money back, but I'd be very weary about this.

      weary = tired

      wary = cautious

      • +5

I am pretty tired, so i guess that explains the spelling error lol

        • +6

          You mean you're pretty weary

          • +2

@ak47wong: He’s just pretty weary to be wary I guess…

Fake mask= Inferior Quality, low grade materials, sloppy stitching and single layer pretending to be triple, Very thin layers used is the most common known to man. And the elastic stitching on each angle becomes undone very easily, and lastly you can smell things while wearing it, guess that comes down to the thin layers anyway.

    • +1

      This is absolutely wrong.

      • How so?

  • +4

For those saying about fake masks, I bought some $15 ones from Ebay. At the time I knew they would not be good quality, so I'm not sure why I bothered. I am now. I also bought some of the good quality Costco ones (now sold out online, but may be available in store).

The good quality ones I will use if I need to be around other people, or inside where someone else may be in the next few hours. Given I have the cheap crappy ones, I will be using these when I am outside and nowhere near other people (where I exercise there is never anyone within about 50 metres, for example). This will save me using my good quality masks when they are not necessary, but legally required.

One thing I will say though, some of the loops on the crappy ones have broken. They probably cost more each in the long run.

Literally had two packs delivered today from this seller. Not in boxes as shown in photo but in two sealed bags. Quality wise they seem fine - wore one this afternoon. My wife works at a hospital, and if anything the elastic on these seem thicker so more comfortable around the ears. The only issue is they aren't boxed so you need to be careful not to cross contaminate them as you pull one out. Make sure you clean your hands before grabbing one.

They may not be the most amazing quality but I'm happy with them as it at least means I won't have to wear a sock on my face for the next few weeks whilst walking the dog.

    • Just wear plastic gloves to prevent contamination, also some people wearing fake ones just wearing 3-5 face masks at a time, feels more protected but very wasteful.

  • -2

It's only my opinion, but instead of spending money to buy an over-priced mask with uncertain quality, use a scarf or something similar will do the same job.
(Unless you're going to hospitals or talk to people in close distance.)

I personally do not fully agree of compulsory face-mask policy, especially the government has not helping Victorians to get decent face mask without being ripping off.
I actually called my overseas family to send me a container of face masks to sell, unfortunately they could only get one box (50pcs) for me.

    • +2

So… You wanted your family to send you more masks, for you to on-sell?…..

    • A container of face mask? Must be from China.

    • Plenty of useful info here Banjo, incl numerous FAQs : ** https://www.dhhs.vic.gov.au/face-coverings-covid-19 **

"The Victorian Government has placed orders for 1.37 million reusable fabric masks for students in metropolitan Melbourne and the Mitchell Shire. 23 million single use masks have also been ordered and will be distributed while the reusable masks are made.

Around 500,000 have already been provided to DHHS for public housing tower tenants and 1,200,000 single use masks to the Department of Education and Training for use in schools.

Slightly cheaper at $25.00 and dispatched from Melbourne

    • I've temporarily stopped backorders (referring to the above link), stock should arrive on Monday so will be available for purchase then.

Not so long ago…. people are not even bothered wearing mask.

Thanks to the confusing message by the government, you only wear mask if you have the corona virus and you dont need to wear a mask if you are healthy.

Everytime I do grocery shopping I get angry eye stares, people shaking heads, people coughing pass me and smile.

Today I get to say it's about time you guys join in the fun 😁

Fingers crossed nsw…. do not have another lock down.

    • +2

Yeah, this brings back memories of when I was arguing with people here about the efficacy of masks all the way back in March and getting downvoted.. While the guy claiming all experts agree masks are useless for the wearer was getting upvoted. Smh.

      @lostn where you at?

herd mentality behaviour, when you go against the grain. I hear you.

It sounds like you’ve made you own judgement based on information you sought, than just listen to the “experts” (dare I say WHO). We are seeing retrospective management of the problem when the genie has already left the bottle at a point where it is much harder to manage.

As the saying goes, it’s easier to put out a spot fire, rather than wait for evidence to see if it’ll turn into a forest fire… just saying.

This was also a problem I faced on a large (hotspot) suburb Facebook page a while back (May). One of the mods was a massive anti masks guy and would delete anything related to mask usage.

He was sticking posts saying masks were useless/dangerous/plain paranoia/stupid. When I argued with him and included studies/references about the effectiveness of masks, he just deleted the post, and re-posted. More people commented (mainly Asians, nurses etc) and he would delete again and re-posted with comments disabled.

I'm glad we have mandatory masks now (with fines for not wearing one). There was a lot of stigma attached to wearing a mask. Maybe there still is but now everyone is wearing one, peer pressure/fines works wonders (people get the look when they're not wearing one).

In Asian countries, when one is sick, the doctor would give a mask and medication. It is considered normal and considerate to wear one over there unlike here in Australia.

If you need masks in a hurry, Coles sells "Softmed Surgical Masks 50pk (level 3)" for $36. I bought it today and need to ask from a cashier.

    • First time i ever heard of them selling masks?

  • +1

We all supposed to dispose of the mask every 4 hours of use….how many people in Melbourne and surrounding areas? 4 milion? Uhmm that's a lot of rubbish.

    • I only need max 1 real one per week, people who need to leave the house for work or school may need more, but will probably use cloth masks as it's probably unsustainable to use 3 disposable every day.

  • Is there such a thing as a "non-breathable" mask? That could get interesting!

  • +2

I thought earlooped said Eneloops. I've been here too long!

My understanding is that a surgical mask is to prevent your cough or sneeze to spread. Wearing one helps the community in case you yourself are infected but has no known symptom yet. A good mask will generally prevent that and an inferior quality ones (some people call them fake) doesn't as it is made from generic materials that didn't pass quality testing. Wearing an inferior one is as good as not wearing one but it will save you from a $200 fine.
When buying online, make sure they list their certification number and the certification can be found on the approval website (make sure that site isnt fake too). If is real, sellers generally has nothing to hide.

Check this video out on how they test these masks.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ZuwUAwlfd8

Stay safe and good luck all

    • Wearing an inferior one is as good as not wearing one

I disagree. Surgical masks are just designed to slow down your exhale breath speed. Anything covering your mouth and nose will do that, at varying levels of effectiveness. A poorly fitted high quality mask is worse than a correctly fitted low quality mask.

About a month ago I paid $75 for 50 masks from a Chinese shop. About 1/3 of them the ear hook(called straps?) was broken. I will call these masks fake. These days "Made in China" means "fake", "cheap" or both.

Quick warning if buying from amazon. I was looking at masks shipped from Australia and the expected delivery for most is October. They just import to themselves From China then ship to you from Australia after. It’s a way around amazons ships from Australia button.

This is the best lead time I could find though.

Fake masks? Heard it all now ROFL and the masses and consumers showing way too much hostility towards China as of late. Does anybody really, seriously listens to Donald Duck Tramp who is the biggest faker of all time?

    LOL….

  • I ordered 2 boxes of masks. If they don't come in package similar to listing in Amazon, they are going back.

I have no problem with masks made in China, I knew that before buying. False advertisement however need to be discouraged.

  • These are poor quality masks, I ordered from amazon, 80% broke the string with out even putting them on. do not buy.

  • Bunnings (not a deal) has them for $1 a piece with a 10pk. Maybe they are "better" quality as it is sold via bunnings… anyone able to verify their experience?

    https://www.bunnings.com.au/10pk-disposable-face-mask-sojo_p…

Feels like lots of people are suffering from mask fatigue here :(

    • One of the reviewers advised the straps broke on a few, it's a good sign that they are not good quality.

There goes my illusion with items sold via a "reputable" retailer :)…

  • I'm still trying to work out if masks that are sterile offer more protection than the non-sterile ones. If anyone in the know could offer some advice, please do.

    • For protection, you would want to look for masks that meet at least one of the following standards:

      • AS4381
      • ASTM F2100
      • EN14683

Alternatively, a P2 (or above) respirator meeting AS1715 can provide higher level of protection than surgical masks, but fit testing is essential and is currently not recommended for general public usage.

Otherwise, masks that does not meet any of the aforementioned standards are only as good as any other face coverings.

    • No, you are not operating on anyone. Why would you need sterile?

  • Do they meet any of the following standards? If so, which category or level do are they rated for?
    - AS4381
    - ASTM F2100
    - EN14683

If they do not meet any of the aforementioned standards, they should not be considered as surgical masks and are only as good as any other disposable face coverings.

  • Available now for $18.99 from Tinawells AU seller

Edit: Not anymore, price was fluctuating all arvo.
