Walked into the Big W store in Melbourne today and Big W are selling a box of 4 Energy effecient globes under the brand of Chevron for 5 bucks!!! That is very cheap. Not sure about the Chevron brand but for 5 dollars…

They come in various wattages and shapes (the long ones and the squilly bulb shapes).

I think Chevron is specially made for Big W (according to the box)

Normal price for these are $11.86

  • Yeah, Chevron has been a BigW house brand for years

    • In fact Chevron has been a Woolworths "home brand" since WAY before BIG W existed (in the same way that "Embassy" was/is a G.J.Coles brand)… so some-one told me… I mean, I'm not THAT old… really!!! God its hard to type when your teeth keep falling onto the keyboard. Makes you wonder why you bother taking the bloody things out of the glass every damn morning!

edit: see page 19 - "Own Brands" - in the following blurb: http://www.dse.com.au/isroot/dse/support/woolworths_history.…

    • and also an oil company! :)

      • Yes, Caltex / Chevron / Texaco are all incestuously related…

  • Thanks for the tip.

They've been discounted to this price before - about 2 months ago. I've been waiting until they came on sale again.

  • Nice bargain. Thanks for sharing!

  • You can't go wrong at that price! :) Thanks RickB.
I'll ask her indoors to keep an eye out for this offer at Carindale (suburban BrisVegas) BIG W tomorrow. If I get a chance, I'll try Bne CBD also.
Re "various wattages and shapes (the long ones and the squilly bulb shapes)"; a mate showed me an article MANY years ago (when CF bulbs were new and expensive) that quantified and compared the efficiency of various physical formats of the lamps. Basically, the more folds & "squiggles" in the tube, the (exponentially) less light can "escape" and therefore the lower the efficiency. :(
Common sense really when you think about it, but it's not a factor that seems to be discussed in the market-place.

  • the reduced efficiency of CFLs pales to nothing compared to their environmental cost — while on one hand they can help you save $100 off your electricity bill, they are full of mercury vapour, which is a highly dangerous nerve gas, and pose a greater environmental problem during their disposal/land fill than ye olde filament incandescent bulbs, they also don't last nearly as long if you turn them on/off frequently. if you were to rate lights on their Green credentials, incandescents would get 0.5 star, CFLs 1 star, and LEDs 4.5 stars, (for embodied energy/efficiency). LEDs are yet to become widely available, although BigW sells economical LED desklamps and LED replacement bulbs for halogen lamps. hopefully LED replacements for conventional bayonets will be on the market soon.

    • Excellent points Kristo. There isn't any regulation of the disposal of fluro' lamps - compact or otherwise. (I remember seeing a chap on The Inventors on ABC TV last year? who'd developed - at great expense - machinery to efficiently/"safely" dispose of fluro' tubes, & he was having trouble getting any interest without legislation to require controlled disposal of the devices.) Unfortunately decisions/policies made by government/s aren't necessarily made by properly/fully informed parties. The manufacture & disposal of fluro' lamps is an issue that is only going to escalate. LEDs are indeed highly efficient, but I suspect that the market take-up & economies of scale will take as long to evolve as did the popularity of CF lamps (decades!?).

    • BARRRRRRPPPPPPP incorrect myth regarding mercury. Whilst it is true that CFLs contain mercury — 5mg or so — they are meant to be recycled. Recycle them at any IKEA.

      • Thanks for the info' WayWarDone.

  • what about those envirosavers? I think they install all the bulbs for us for free isnt it?

  • Went to bigw melbourne tonight. They are a Manager's special. Not sure if all stores have it at this price.

Let's get some feedback from other users…

    • Valid at Big W Frankston/Karingal. They have the swirly ones AND the u-shaped ones, ES and BC fittings, from 40w-equivalent to 100w-equivalent. Tag suggests special runs to July 28th. Warm-white colour only. Hope this helps!

    • Valid in SA too at Cumberland Park BigW..

They have both screw (ES) and Bayonet (BC) style with both U shaped and more compact squiggly's in wattage equivalents from 40-125W..
I replaced all the heavily used lights in my share house with these.. replacing (in general) 100W globes with a mix of 75W equivalents (14W I think) and 125W equivalents (23W) depending on location.

      • Did the same at home last year. The problem for me is that we have a large number of ceiling lights on dimmers, and the CF lamps are simply USELESS via dimmers (flickering; failing to strike), even though the accompanying blurb says they're OK. :(
Which of course leads to the point,,, what happens once incandescent lamps are forcibly removed from the market?

        Cheers,
