900
MIRC-SWV0-MNKL

Updated: thanks to BarginHunter for finding 50% off!. IRC is a really old, but still highly used chat system. I came across this promo when my trial just expired so I purchased my copy. This isn't for everyone but for those who still chat on IRC and are keen on using mIRC, You get 25% off. If you select United States, Alaska, you don't pay any GST as if you selected Australia as your billing location. My payment still went through fine through PayPal in AUD, just without needing to pay GST.

      Oh-o

      Best notification tone these days

There’s a mobile app now. Logged on and still have my friends list. People used to compare icq ids and see who had the smallest

      • Was also way to detect if someone messaging or sending friend request was legit too yeah?

      • I still remember the pain of forgetting the password to my ICQ account… But only because my account number was only 6 digits. #lostcred

        • +1

Four digit, then they had a database crash and lost them all so I ended up with a six-digit one :-(

          • +1

@mickeyjuiceman: Oh, wow. The pain… that's almost therapy worthy.

I remember Island BBS restarting their TradeWars server just a day or two before I was going to finally to obliterate the incumbent, a totally dominant, merciless dude who always destroyed everyone by virtue of sheer size. It took me at least six months of plotting and scheming and logging in at very weird times to build up a fleet that would take him out whilst at the same time engaging with him just enough for him to not realise what I was doing….

Part of me might still be slightly bitter about that. Another part of me thinks he, my nemesis, ran the BBS…

Have been using Mirc for at least 20 years and I had no idea people actually used it for chat purposes lol. Wow!

    • well the C in mIRC stands for chat. That could be why.

      • lol. Thanks for the scoop 😉

    • +4

wait, so what were you using it for then?

      • @TunTown. If you recognise this, you will understand 😉

        • I don’t recognise @TunTown. What else were you using mIRC for?

          Good old days

    • Wait, you mean people don't use mIRC for IRC? What else would you use it for?

    • +5

You pay them with your personal information actually.

      • The ads is where the revenue is.

    • +2

Are you comparing Twitter with mIRC? You clearly have no idea what are you talking about.

  • +1

man … is this still around ? available on android ?

  • Serious qs but what do the users actually still use it for?
From memory I used to use it to get ftp transfers of the latest subbed anime, but obviously that's not an intuitive use anymore.

    • Still file transfers.
It's an alternative to torrenting and Newsgroups.

      • Wouldnt it expose your IP if you cmd netstat -n ?

        • Your IP and a lot more is exposed when you visit any website

    • Books are still good on there, hasn't flagged any malware or virus issues yet

      • Just remembered gotten many a pdf books from there.

        ¯l_(ツ)_/¯

        • +1

          Lying on IRC? Never happened.

Tell a young person today that you used to follow football matches and wrestling ppvs via a txt prompt and think it was amazing!

Being in the scene when the dreamcast boot disc dropped was a time, especially with the new amazing telstra cable that could go all the way to 60KB/a on single rar file.

Owe my love of trance and rap to IRC
    good times

    • +2

I did the exact same thing (wrestling ppvs).

Apparently Kevin Nash used IRC back in the late 90s. Wouldn't surprise me.

      • +1

        Really?

        That explains a lot then

Wcw often felt like it was written by 100 people throwing ideas out at once in that era

Someone msged him with a/s/l? and asked if he'd like a fingerpoke… And wrestling history was made!

  • +3

God it has been a while since I have even thought about mIRC. Those were the days.

My first introduction to the internet was mIRC.
    MIRC = internet

    • I still remember my first introduction to the Internet was Netscape in UNSW which takes half an hour to load up an NBA page on Michael Jordan's Chicago Bulls.

      • +1

Netscape navigator was the ducks nuts of web browsers.

    • Busted

    • Lul you left Auto-accept xdcc on and got rekt

      • This reminded me of the time my co-worker had bluetooth on his phone set to auto accept. So I was sending his phone random files.

        • +1

This reminded of me annoying my friend sending things via Bluetooth while he was showing his phones features to someone.
On Nokia, he kept getting notification that I’m trying to send him something every 20 seconds .. ha ha

      • Haha…. Yes he did.

    • Wasn't from me!
Whenever I got notifications from the companies to take action on users i just blocked the address

I remember my friend getting a notice from ihug in 2002

  • # Appears as XENO

Does the developer's nose still squeak when you click it?

  • As mentioned by other commenters, HexChat is a better free open source alternative to mIRC.

If you want a more persistent alternative a la znc, consider running a relay on a server such as Quassel or weechat with relay clients (instructions - don't bother with Pushbullet as Weechat Android gives good notifications).

    • man I remember having to use psybnc to stay connected all the time, we're living in the future now!

  • ICQ and Yahoo Messenger days

    • Yahoo messenger was the shit. If it's the one i'm thinking of, you used to be able to draw stuff in the chat? ahh the things I used to draw as a little 11 year old

I think there was another popular one at the time, nine messenger or a msn messenger different to one everyone's familiar with. It had chat rooms, could have been a website though
