  • How is it better than any other iron skillet?
I purchased one unbranded very cheap, it only last 2-3 years though.

Answered your own question mate. These will outlast you if taken care of properly.

      • I cook Indian curries sometimes and put tomatoes in it. Have heard that not to use tomatoes in iron. Does it make much difference?
The unbranded one is still working but a bit rusty.

        • Probably get an enameled cast iron pot for that

        • +1

Brand new it might cause issues. A few years in and it shouldn't be an issue.
I do spag bol in mine and no problems. But I waited till my seasoning was set and I don't cook acidic foods all the time.

          • @DarwinBoy: Not sure if I have the seasoned pot. I just tried to season it in oven for 1 hour but it doesn't really looks like its properly seasoned. The non stick layer is very thin though. Should I try to season again?

            • @crazyboy: The season it comes with is not really that great. It gets better the more you use it. But i did sesson my new one 2 or 3 times.
From about 6 months with a couple of uses a week it's at that point it becomes an amazing frying pan.
I randomly season it not because it needs it after 2 years but just because I can.
I also transitioned. I was to tight ass to throw out my still usable non stick so used that for tomato based dishes for the first 6 months. Now I just use the cast iron.

        • The acid in the tomatoes is bad for the seasoning, correct. We've got a stainless skillet purely for tomato-based idshes.

        • I have a cheapie (Asian grocery I think?) Cast iron skillet that's well over 10 years old now (probably 15 or 20) with no problems. If you're cooking acidic food in it regularly you'll need to reseason the pan regularly. I rarely do either, but on the occasion I cook a tomato sauce in it, I usually reseason afterwards (though don't usually need to after say frying some tomatoes in a breakfast fry up). Basically, scrub it with some water and maybe a little detergent to clean. If it looks dull/matte it needs seasoning.

If you imagine Aldi or Ozito power tools (worst), then Ryobi (midrange), then Bosch blue (professional quality)…. then Lodge cookware would be the Ryobi level. ie. Not awful but it's not 'the best'. People should look at youtube reviews of different brands, features, etc. For example one company might make handles long and thin so they might break, another might come with a pouring lip on one or both sides for both right and left-handers, and another might have a thicker/thinner wall. Most people don't want to pay the $$$ for top brands though, so Lodge is as 'low on the scale' as you'd want to go, because they've at least put some effort into R&D like how thick and long handles/walls should be so they don't get returns due to them breaking/cracking.

      • What would be the 'Bosch Blue' equivalent of Cast Iron pans?

        • Solidteknics - wrought iron, lighter, more even heat distribution, Australian made and owned.

      last 2-3 years?

What is wrong with it after 2-3 years?

      • a bit rusty

        • +1

You can strip all the rust and seasoning off.

Once you reseason it again, it will become as new again.

          • @JimB: Tried to reseason today, not much helpful. I think its just normal iron pot.

            • @crazyboy: You'll need to get rid of all the rust (wire brush on a drill works well) before you reseason. Removing the rust will take it back to bare metal so you'll either need to season a few times or understand that the seasoning won't be great until it's been used (at high heat with oil/fat) for a while.

Plenty of Youtube videos on restoring old cast iron if you're not sure.

              • @OzBragain: Ok great.
What if the pot is normal iron. Its not cast iron I believe. Will it still be fine?

                • @crazyboy: Can you post a pic?

Stainless should be obvious. Spun steel or carbon steel will be thinner and lighter than cast iron. I'm guessing you'll only have a problem if it's enameled but then it's probably stuffed already with rust behind the enamel.
