800

This is one for all of you churners out there.
After burning through my ANZ, St George, HSBC and Citibank cards at least for another 2 months, it's left me scraping the bottom of the barrel, and luckily Westpac has come back with a (somewhat) good bonus points deal. Once again existing and those that have held a Westpac credit card in the last 12 are excluded.

If you haven't burnt through your ANZ and St George/Bank of Melbourne card they are currently offering better deals

  • or you can earn 80k Altitude points worth 26.6k Kris/Asia miles…

  • A decent option for those who just used up their St George/ANZ bonus points offers.

  • +1

Wasn't aware ANZ deal was still going, thanks for highlight OP. Go go credit churn.

  • +1

What HSBC and Citibank deals are you referring to? I have exhausted Westpac (80k), ANZ (120k) and just signed up with St George (80k). I am looking for my next target.

    • The HSBC and Citibank deals were some 10 months ago i think, unfortunately their current offerings are not even on the radar

  • +7

Was waiting for the 90k no annual fee (+$50 QFF fee) one to come back.

    • Same boat, but given the lack of churn options (available to me) at the moment, I might bite this one…

  • Churning means lower credit score?

    • +1

I have applied for two credit card in July, one was the Citibank and the other Bank of Melbourne. When I last checked my credit score in August, it has gone up.

      • What if you cancel CC how will it impact your credit score?

        • +2

It also goes up. My experience is the same as nightelves, apart from the whole Elf thingy.

        • +2

My experience was the same as night elf. Score went up with new cards. When i cancelled there was a slight drop. But only 10-15 points or so.

          Overall it's up

          • +1

@cheesecactus: Yeah same only ever had a drop of 15-20 points which is nothing and I seemed to be consistently getting approved compared to last year. So far got 4 approved this year and counting.

    • +1

I have found it variable but typically the less accounts and CC's I had, the worse my credit score - despite flawless repayment record. I've since churned a couple or cards and moved a home loan and I am up ~100 credit points.

    • not really, credit score is a pretty meaningless item in Australia anyway. Regardless I regularly churn (at least 2 times a year, 3 this year so far) and I have a 846 credit score according the Creditsavvy (experian)

  • Applied for ANZ.. been 2 weeks… any idea how long its meant to take

    • When I churned through ANZ earlier this year, it took me almost 3 or 4 weeks to get it all sorted. Probably with the reduced staff because of covid it took multiple back and forths and sending documents multiple times, having to call and chase up each time.

      • They cut their call line and only take emails… rip

        • Ah good luck! In my application ANZ also needed a confirmation of closure from the last churn (Citi), and Citi had cut their lines down to critical support only! In the end ANZ understood the situation that I wasn't able to get in touch with Citi at all and they ended up dropping that requirement.

    • I applied last Wed, missed one call from ANZ on Friday, then they called again this morning and approved.

    • I applied about a month ago and then got approved and received my cards within two weeks. Have you given them a call to enquire about your application?

      • Sent an email. They cut their call line :(
I've uploaded all the docs and then they asked for another copy last week for no reason :L waste of time

  • Is there an annual fee for Westpac Premium Advantage Cistomers?

    • I don't believe so, at least according to the T&Cs. I'm a Premier Advantage customer myself and just applied for this.

  • Do i need a bank account with Weatpac for this or can I get the card only?

    • +1

Can get card only. You will be a customer then but only for the credit card.

    • +1

Think you can just get the card. The only time where you would need an account is if it's a no annual fee credit card promo that requires you to set up a bank account with Westpac.

  • I recently requested the ANZ card, and it seems it will be approved. Do I need to wait 3 months to apply for this one?

    • no

    • You dont have to wait, but the problem might be having a combined credit limit being too high for all your credit cards.

  • I thought St George was a subsidiary of Westpac? I wondered if this would cause application issues if churning through both… but I guess not from what OP is saying?

    • +1

      No - separate businesses

  • -1

If you want to maximize on your investment, you can pay $300 ($250 + $50) and get the black card offer of 90K points for the first year..

    https://www.westpac.com.au/personal-banking/credit-cards/rew…

    • So you think the 30k points are worth the additional 100$ ?

      • +2

        $200 additional.

        • Actually is just 50$ as this deal is 150$ total right?

          • +3

@nomekop: This deal is $99 as is inclusive of the Qantas rewards cost

    • +1

Unfortunately $200 for 30k points is fairly poor value.

      • -1

actually I did not see the $50 waived for first year..

why is it poor value ? typical price is 1c per point - but you cannot apply for another card for a year.. so I would make the most of it.

        • The logic is to minimise your costs when taking out the cards so your points have a greater value. If you generally have a small expenditure and are able to save up for a say $4,000-$5,000 expenditure then go for a black card. However if you're happy to spread that over multiple cards then you get far greater value for money as there are generally enough discounted offers over the course of the year to keep you going.

      • I just signed up today for the nab card which is $200 for 40k points extra over this deal. ($295 fee for 100,000). Which I think is better.

More importantly it gives me a $1=1pt credit card and also leaves me open for a better Westpac offer in the future on their 100k point card (as they've had recently in the past)

  • -1

The T&Cs are always worded ambiguously to me.. I have held a qantas rewards card with NAB in the last 12 months am I still eligible to earn these bonus points?

    • +3

Existing Westpac customers who currently hold an Earth Classic, Earth Platinum, Earth Platinum Plus, Earth Black, Altitude Classic, Altitude Platinum or Altitude Black credit card, or who have held one in the last 12 months, are not eligible for this offer.

Not ambiguous at all if you're talking about a NAB card…

      • -3

These deals usually exclude ANY points earning card in the previous 18 months it’s very confusing

        • +3

          Hmmm
Never heard this one, pretty much all of them are limited to the bank offering it except for St george/bank of Melbourne/bank of South Australia who all share the amplify system

        • +1

The only provider I'm aware of with 18 months instead of 12 months is Amex. And it used to be a bit more confusing with bank-issued, direct Amex, and special offerings (e.g. David Jones) all having different (but sometimes interacting) waiting periods.

That could be where your confusion originated.

  • Is there anyway you can change Credit card provider (similar to changing your phone’s provider) without too much hassle of applying for a new card. I currently have few cards but want to change to a low rate one, unfortunately the paperwork for income is not looking good.

    • No, very different.

Something remotely analogous to porting your phone number is a balance transfer, but you can't avoid a credit check.

  • What's the likelyhood of being apporval if I just moved jobs a month ago…..

    • Not good. Theyll ask for proof of income from you current employer for the last 2-3 months.

  • What's with the "Total amount owing on these cards" question?

I pay off my cards in full every month, so I have an empty $0 owing non Westpac card….but the form doesn't let you enter 0 and assumes you have debt?!

    • Ive had the same dilemma for my past cards, I just put my current outstanding balance (or the amount owing on the last statement). I guess $1,873 sounds more believable than $0.

  • +1

Does anyone know how many salary slips are needed? My wife started work after a 5 month break in July 1st week.

    • +1

      Generally 2 months is advised

I've been rejected with more and accepted with less however

    • 2 months.
I just provide 3 months even if they don't ask for it.
Last time I applied for ANZ they called me and asked me to provide an additional payslip so I like to avoid that extra hassle.

      • +2

ANZ is a different beast. If they had it their way, they would even ask for your house mortgage papers as well as any investments and ask to put a fixed deposit with them as long as the credit card was held!

    • I just made the application, you could upload 2 payslips which are less than 60 days old or you could link the account where you pay comes in to their system and they verify from the transaction history. The skeptic in me thinks the first option is probably safer.

  • +1

Was approved for this card and started using the digital card straight away. After one online transaction, I got an email saying that my account has been locked for suspicious activity and I need to visit a branch with ID to verify.

After waiting for 20-30 mins in a branch and unable to get through to the fraud department, calling the line myself also and waiting to sort this out.

    Happened to anyone else?

    • Yes! Approved, started using digital card in stores via Google Pay the next day, and was all good. Then Friday night 8 PM bought a $100 woolies egift card to get this promo: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/561781 , and during the purchase the bank or MasterCard request an SMS confirmation code, which I then verify immediately. ; Then 2 hours later at 10 PM that night I get an email that my online banking has been blocked - and indeed their banking app no longer works - and to visit a branch to get it resolved. The branches are all closed on the weekend, of course. And not open until 9:30 AM on Monday (so convenient). I go in on Monday, and the teller takes my ID (touching it - COVID risk 1 - shared unsanitized touch surface), asks me to sit down for ten minutes, then calls me over, and passes me the phone that they have just been touching and speaking into without a mask (COVID risk 2 - shared unsanitized touch surface + shared surface with aerosolised respiratory particles + surface touching face), and on the other end is a person from the fraud department who asks if I bought a gift card from woolies, and I confirm I did, and they ask did I bought it for myself because they have noticed an increase in fraud with people being asked to buy these gift cards to pay fake debts and the scammer get the victims to read out the numbers, and I confirm that the gift card was for me alone for my groceries and my petrol, and the fraud person is satisfied, and I hand the phone back to the teller. Then the teller asks if I have a physical card, and I say no, not yet, it hasn't arrived in the mail yet, instead I used their app to set up Google Pay on my phone straight away. And the teller looks confused, so repeat it again, saying it's just like Apple Pay, tap and go on your phone, and I have no card yet. And the teller still looks confused, and says I can't understand you, and even though I have been speaking clearly and loudly, asks me to remove my mask, and at this point I just want this pointless exercise to be over, so I do (COVID risk 3 - being made to remove a protective mask worn during a pandemic), and I repeat it, and the lady still looks just as totally confused. And she then she says "oh …. you have a digital card". I reply "yes", although I badly wanted to reply "Ok boomer: yes". And then I'm done and get my ID back and can leave, go to put my disposable surgical mask back on, but now it's the wrong way around, thus increasing my risk rather than decreasing it, and as I try to turn it around, the strap breaks, so as quickly as I can I throw it away and walk through the shopping centre to my car without a mask. Awesome.

And I'm just left wondering: Why did I have to go into a branch? Why did it have to be so inconvenient and covid-unsafe? Why couldn't they just send me a text message that said "please call 1300 123 ABC and press option 3, because our fraud department wishes to confirm your recent purchase from WOOLWORTHS GIFT CARDS BELLA VISTA AU"? Because their current process SUCKS.

      • +1

        Exactly my experience!

  • Currently have a home loan with Westpac $570k balance and earn $82k a year.

Is there a way I can find out id be approved without applying?

    • unfortunately not, you could check you credit score which will give you a good idea of how likely you are to get it. But best bet is to run the gauntlet and fill out an application.

  • Anyone try to fill out their application and the date of birth stuff is randomly changing on its own and won't select what you chose?

  • Got car insurance due on 28 September. What are the chances of getting approved and the card before then?

    • If you apply right now, pretty good. They have a digital card so you can use it ASAP once the account has been set up. I applied back in February and got approved the next day (after reducing my limits on my other cards as requested), however I'm a long-term Westpac customer so YMMV

      • +1

Applied Saturday, approved Monday morning. Am waiting on the cards, didn't realise digital cards are available. Cheers mate. 60k Qantas points sorted.

    • Pretty likely I think. I applied for this card on 24th Aug, got conditionally approved. If not for my income and expenses from my properties, I think I would have got approved unconditionally a lot quicker. I had to call in a couple of times to provide additional info and documents. I found it funny that two of my loans are with Westpac yet they asked me to confirm the loan amounts on my application were correct.

After a few rounds of chasing up, I got approved last Wed 2nd Sep. There is also an option in the Westpac app to view your card details and generate a temporary CVV before the physical card arrives, so no need to wait the extra few days. Unsure if just for iOS phones only or this applies to Android phones too.

      • this applies to Android phones too

        Yes it does.

Source: See comment above yours; I use an Android phone

  • Hm, I've been automatically rejected. It is the first bank that rejected my application.
    Salary: well above 100k
    Savings: 6 digits number
    Liabilities: none
    Credit score: 800+ (Excellent)
Applying for 1-2 credit cards a year, canceling in 11-12 months, i.e. don't cancel immediately after I receive points. Of course, all payments are on time.
Previously held another Westpac Attitude in 2018-2019 with no issues

    • Yeah don't worry, its not just you. I've been rejected as well and provided almost the same figures.

I think westpac is erring on the side of caution with the applications now

    Anyone got their bonus yet?

I received my first statement, got just over 1500 regular non-bonus points. Since its 0.5 point/$, that means I should've done $3k+ on eligible spend already, but no sign of the bonus on the statement….

    • +1

The bonus Altitude Points or Qantas Points will be added to your points balance within 12 weeks once you meet the eligible spend criteria

      • Thanks for pointing that out…just from prior Westpac experience I’ve landed the bonus in the first statement.

        • Westpac appears to have gotten slower for awarding bonus points. Number of days from reaching min spend to getting bonus points in QFF account, for first Westpac 3 cards was = 37+21+22 -> average of 27 days. This time it's going to be at least 53 days (if they do it on the next statement), or longer if they don't.

The absolute slowest ever so far has been St George (who I note are also owned by Westpac), at 70 days.

AmEx are the best though, with figures of 22+21+15 -> average of 19 days. Any average of less than 30 days basically means you usually get it on the next statement, which is the gold standard.

          • @nickj: Same experience, AmEx definitely the fastest. And from memory (been a while since I churned AmEx), they also show how many points you got for each transaction? Useful stuff.

The Westpac bonus ended up arriving in QFF a week after my second statement.

            • @purpleturtle: Yes AmEx show points for every transaction, so you know exactly what gets half points (e.g. rego renewal), what gets double (e.g. Qantas spend). And they also show which transactions earned lounge passes in the same place. So it's completely transparent, it's awesome.

Westpac are the opposite, completely opaque. On a Westpac black card which gave lounge passes on a Qantas spend: did the Qantas spend, waited the required 14 days as per T&Cs, no lounge passes, spent ages chasing them up for them on the phone, spoke to 7 or 8 people over several hours, never got it resolved, closed card in annoyance, then lounge passes eventually arrived after the card was closed, 60 days after the spend (took 46 days more than their T&Cs state) - and there was no visibility on anything, and it was very frustrating trying to get help when things went wrong.
