          • @INFIDEL: “TV sounded crap through this mono speaker.” expected considering mono and casting via wifi/Bluetooth from tv.

            • @itsmehuey: That's what I commented! I didn't expect wonders.

Have certainly had better sound from cheaper Bluetooth speaker with same TV. But it was a mains powered unit with bigger speaker.

              • @INFIDEL: yep - because it was mains powered it had more voltage to output more and better sound. I assume it was also stereo too?

                • @itsmehuey: I know - That's why I said that. Amp chips etc for mains powered units are driven at far higher voltages with far higher amplification & can drive larger speakers. I have experience building amps & electronics.

One of ones I have used with the TV was a large $29 stereo Bluetooth unit from Target. Lots of controls over sound output. But works best through digital input. Surprisingly good sound. I've posted mods for it here.

So sound output of this unit is good - for a battery unit. Wouldn't recommend using on Bluetooth with a TV, as I said.
Main advantage is Google Assistant & being able to cast to it.

Wont keep it. It's not suitable for me. I'll stick with more powerful mains powered units.

  • THESE DON'T LAST. We've had 3 of these. They are great while they work. All 3 have failed within 1 year of purchase. All purchased at different times from different retailers.

  • Guys this speaker is giving me all sorts of issues - equalizer has been dropped from the Google home app, with no sign of it returning soon (confirmed with rep)
And I can't get it to play over Bluetooth like a vanilla speaker
Quite a frustrating purchase at the moment

    • +1

just curious to see if this would help with your issues at all, are there any firmware updates available for the speaker that you haven't yet installed? and I'm assuming you've tried factory reset and re-pairing with your google account and network.

  • Can u link these around the house? And stream Spotify?

    • yep you can. they'll be set up in a group and you can stream them using google home with spotify integration. you can also stream to them individually as well even if you have put them in a group by saying which exact speaker (name) you want to cast to. They work in pretty much the same way as any Google Home / Nest type speaker does.

  • Ok well I have a JBL link 10. So this can work with that?

    • yep.. set up would be pretty much the same for the link portable as it was for the link 10. they both use google home/assistant.

  • Finally got mine delivered today from OW. The sound quality is underwhelming. I also have a JBL Link View that I bought for around $180 a while back, which completely kills it soundwise.

Having said that, the utility is great for the price - having a portable Google Assistant speaker is very convenient if you don't already have one in every room. Not having it to plug in for charging is also great. Being waterproof, I'm planning to use it in the shower.

Last but not least, and something that is rare in these types of devices but is very important to me is AirPlay compatibility, as I am an iPhone user.

    • Yeah the quality isn't the best (as it is not AC powered) but it's good and given the portable nature it's something that provides a bit of flexibility it's got a different kind of use case than those that aren't portable. Would compare these to something like a UE Boom 3 etc, but with smart speaker functionality (WIFI, AirPlay, etc.)
Also cannot really compare it to something like the JBL Link View - that's something more like the Google Nest Hub Max in terms of audio performance. As those produce some decent bass, where as the Link Portable is just OK with bass.

      • I can't compare but would have thought that UE Boom 3 should sound better then this. Other "dumb" portable Bluetooth speakers that have a similar power rating that I've heard sound better.

I have a number of smart speakers and displays and this is the only one that supports AirPlay (also the only one that's portable and waterproof) so definitely worth the $94.05 (delivered) I paid for it.

        • It has Airplay? Damn.

          • @theguyrules: I know, right? I also didn't know that until it arrived and was surprised nobody else has mentioned that.

      • Also cannot really compare it to something like the JBL Link View - that's something more like the Google Nest Hub Max in terms of audio performance.

This is incorrect - both JBL Link View and JBL Link Portable are rated at 20 watt RMS, so are directly comparable, while Google Next Hub Max is rated at 50 watt.

        • I stand corrected on that front. But it is also likely that the speaker complement setup is completely different. I guess you have trade offs in both, and link view is probably twice the price.

  • how does this compare to the Polk Assist currently on the same promotional price? It isn't portable but has chromecast (audio) which gives better sound quality I assume?

    • +1

This has chromecast, which gives a better quality sound than Bluetooth in my use. But it's not great sound.

      Both are mono devices.
The photos of the inside of the Polk show it like a traditional forward focussed speaker, where this is designed for "360 degree" sound.

  • Could someone please confirm when you press the bluetooth button it lights up….

    • The lights at the top on the front show blue.

  • Can you charge your phone with this? What's the type-c connection for? Audio in?

    • Just charging - through the port on the back, or in the base.
