Noticed that the iPhone SE is $150 off, similar to this deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/550568 but it wasn't discussed there and I thought it worth attention.

Usual caveat that it is technically purchasing with a payment plan linked to the contract. Factor in that you'll need at least one month (unless you're lucky and get prorated) at a minimum $35. Still makes it $634 which, ignoring the oddity and mental gymnastics of the Optus flybuys deal, makes it a good price.

          • @[Deactivated]: How do you compare speed in practical use?
You get 1/2 functionality from Android & cannot transfer out without pain.
On Android, you can change to any brand in very short time, with most apps free.

The speed comparison is false economy. Minor benefits are too costly.

@[Deactivated]: Putting aside my personal frustration with how limiting and annoying iOS is to use, this phone fails because the display is not up to today's standard. Display quality is the most important aspect of a phone IMO given it is what you are using 100% of the time. When I had iPhone 8 as my work phone, I was astounded with how bad the display is compared to what I'm used to.
There is no way I would be happy using a device with such a bad quality display. I am all for small form factor but I wouldn't want to go any smaller than s10e I'm currently using.

            • @keejoonc: My sister owns the phone, it's clear, vibrant and honestly I think even for today's standards it's great. Jonathan Morris did a video I think with the 720P XR vs a 1080p screen and people still preferred the iPhone. This doesn't prove anything but I'm just saying you have to be a bit more specific as to what aspect exactly doesn't live up to expectations.

Ios is limiting I agree but if you can get past it, in my experience everything else works great. Again, this is coming from someone who hasn't owned an iPhone in 4-5 years and I understand it's just my experience.

  • Can someone please explain? Is this a new customer only offer? I'm already on a vodafone month to month plan using a BYO Iphone SE and every time i click on upgrade at the checkout page, the promotional savings just disappears like some sort of bait and switch……

    64 Gb is a shame in 2020.

    • +1

Yes with no micro SD slot :(

    • +5

Then pay the extra $80 for the 128GB version…

    • +6

Most people would rather forget 2020 altogether

    • +2

Not everyone takes selfies . 64gb is plenty for some people’s need.

    • +1

I disagree. 64gb in 2015 is a shame maybe, but nowadays media is almost always streamed or stored in the cloud. They are just designing for this. Plus it works to people who want a budget friendly phone who don't utilise lots of onboard storage. It's sales tactic too, if you want more then hand over the dollars.

      • I don't fill my 32GB, don't take any selfies. Shoot video of the kids, but transfer my photos etc. once a month or so.

    • +1

It's actually acceptable more than ever, considering nearly all apps/services are cloud-based.

@$400+tax in the US, $599 is what it should have launched at. When it was released the AUD had absolutely tanked because of uncertainty around covid, but the people at Apple are smart enough to know that ~50c is temporary and ~75c is a more long term exchange rate.

I wonder if we're getting back to the bad old days of the Australia tax?

Swings and roundabouts—cheaper phones in the USA; but hospital visits you might spend the rest of your life paying off.

  • Get the phone. Use it on Vodafone for less than a month. Get a $2 telstra prepaid SIM and port the number to it and you never have to hear from Vodafone again.

That's how I got my pixel 4 from them.

Ive heard of people being able to cancel the contract before it began before activating the Sim. But you have to call Voda.

  • Is it the same size/shape as the iphone 6?

    • Sort of .. more like the iPhone 8. Slightly thicker than the 6, glass back (wireless charging), no headphone jack, non-moving home button (doesn’t physically press in but provides haptic feedback)

  • I assume you can do this via online for us Melbourne based folks?

    • I noticed the Vodafone shop at my local shopping centre was open yesterday when I went to the supermarket. There were 4 bored looking employees in there, and a sign on the door saying open for appointments only, so I think you may be able to ring your local store for an appointment?

It's better value than other iPhones, but Galaxy Note 10+ 5G is superior to any iPhone in history. Even better if you go for Chinese superior value for money flagships.
You are still locked to iPhone expensive system (I hardly spent $10 in >10years with Galaxy on apps, best are from Google).

These are some of the advantages of Note20u (coming Friday) vs 'best' iPhone:

It has industry-leading security - Samsung Knox Security Beats iOS, Android, Gartner Finds - InformationWeek, + secure folder when using multiple accounts,
outstanding S-pen with BT remote control,
multi-window DeX Desktop Experience with wireless monitor (eg. 4K) with keyboard/mouse/external SSD/Drives (multiple formats),
Google's Live Caption feature which will transcribe videos, podcasts & even phone calls in real time,
Xbox Game Pass Ultimate (>100 games)*,
    Microsoft **Windows partnership
    , syncing,
    5G,
up to 1TB replaceable mSD cards, On the Go external Drives/USBs
superior Dynamic AMOLED 2X 120Hz screen, adaptive refresh to save battery, (inferior on SE)
larger 6.9″ screen (vs 6.5″); 1/3 more pixels, ratio 91.7% vs 83.7%, SE 2020 has 4.5x less pixels!!
    lighter & easier to handle,
    12GB RAM vs 4GB,
PD USB-C/3.2 vs USB 2 proprietary cable,
    108MP 1/1.33″ 0.8µm camera vs 12MP 1/2.55", 1.4µm,
5x optical, 50x hybrid vs 2x optical zoom,
    8K video,
    HDR10+,
FP under-display & minor camera hole vs distracting notch,
Fast 25W charger PD3 Qi/PMA wireless & Reverse for other devices vs 5W in box,
    much better SAR radiation vs iPhone 1.17 + 0.47 AirPods = 1.64 > max 1.6 allowed,
(maybe) cheaper for same size RAM with better discounts later :)

However, you can find much better value for money Chinese phones if you can live without the S-pen

honestly in the grand scheme of things does it really matter about "superiority"? personally i think for the majority of iPhone users or all phone users in general these specs really don't matter to them, nor should. phone prices are getting inflated higher than ever, but for what exactly?

phones like the Galaxy Note 10 and Note 20 really only exist for the 1% of phone users which have money to burn. in majority of scenarios, accessibility prioritises over value. hence why iPhone still exists…

      • To be fair though, the iPhone 11 pro max plus 512gb is more expensive than the note 20

      • +2

Some people need the biggliest numbers to feel good.

    • Oh lord, the new galaxy flagship phones are a big step backwards from last year.

    • cool story

    • +5

You sound like a typical I.T. person. All you see is numbers and statistics. You have no concept of feelings and emotions. The iphone is incredibly user friendly. Regular consumers dont care a single pid about amoled this or sar radiation that.

  • I bought the 256gb three months ago. Super happy with it coming from a note 9 And android user of ten years.
I’m not a heavy user and don’t game, but get a whole day of surfing and iMessage.
When I was using it as a work phone as well (heavy use, maps, music, email, heaps of calls) I would only get until about 3pm before needing a charge.

But I have two phones now this SE and a work iPhone. (Actively keeping work and personal life seperate!)

  • Just rang up vodaphone and asked to buy the iphone se outright, they had no issues with doing so as i was already a vodaphone customer on a sim only plan. I tried to get the $35 50Gb plan however was told this was for a new number only :(.

    • Really? Can you talk us through the details needed? What if I wasn't a Vida customer already?

      • if you weren't a customer you would have to buy the phone and plan as advertised and then cancel within the first few months if you just wanted the phone. Since i am a customer with them they were happy to sell the phone at $18/month over 36 months.

        • Interesting. I guess if I sign up for a Sim only prepaid, then that probably won't count..

  • +1

Not a bad price. Nice to see some good phones in the mid range.

Every year I feel less of a need to have the highest end flagship. Will probably move to a more budget friendly phone soon as they seem to be getting better in quality.

  • Available in store too?

  • I tried to sign up to this deal on the voda website and it said they declined the application based on a failing the credit check :( no idea what that's about as all my bills are on direct debit and I never have missed a payment on mobile or other services. Has anyone had experience with this before? Is there any way for them to sign you up if the credit check comes back badly. Thanks

    • It may be worth to check your credit report.

      • Ok thanks I will try that

  • So what are the odds of the SE getting to this price naturally when the iPhone 12 comes out? I'm out of the loop re how iphone pricing works when a new phone comes out, but need to by my wife a replacement to her old SE.

Wondering if I go for this deal now, or wait ~3 months.

    • +1

It depends on how much you'd like to spend. SE is not gonna see a price review in 3 month as it's still a new model (just 4 months old). I doubt there will be another budget iPhone model any soon.

  • I went into a vodafone store today to look at this deal and someone (presumably the manager) told me I would have to remain on the plan for a minimum of 2 months at least (I asked if I could sign up and then cancel at the same time) as they are selling the phone at a discount! He also said if i just wanted an iphone se I would have to buy it at $749, at which point I said that no i wouldn't as he had just tole me that I could get it for $599 plus 2 months at $35 so that was only $669!
I told him I would have to think about it and left but now really want to go back and rub his face in it. Has anyone actually run into any issues with purchasing and then cancelling??

    • I’ll be attempting to cancel after receiving the device. Will let you know if there’s any issues.

      • Its all very confusing. just checking out t&c's now and it states if you cancel the $40 red plan that you have to pay "$40 + 100% of RRP of chosen device".. but says other places that min cost will be $599 (or $599 plus $35 for plan)… but the $599 isn't the RRP of the phone as its discounted $150.

        • Ah yeah I see what you're saying. I'll find out what the minimum cost is before I cancel. And let you know. A bit silly if it's RRP of the phone and not the discounted amount you sign up to.

          • @omego84: The total minimum cost is $639 so they cannot charge more than 1 month as they would exceed the stated amount

            • +1

@Gracey: I got Iphone SE 128gb, cancelled 2 days after I received the phone and paid $679. So its the discounted amount you'd be paying when you cancel.

              • @bghunter: How did you get it cancelled? Did you buy a prepaid sim and Port out of vodafone? I called them to cancel and they said I need to wait 45 days before I can cancel. Or is it easier to cancel if I go into a store? Hoping for your reply!!

                • @omego84: Sorry, just saw your question. I just asked them to cancel as I didnt need the sim since i already have one. They did try to give me other options which didnt suit me so they cancelled it in the end.
Probably try chatting instead of calling, 2 rep i chatted with, both were ok to cancel straightaway

      • How did your application process go? I did it, got an SMS (which I initially ignored) and then got an email telling me to click the link and do their ID verification, which I did.

I haven't heard anything since. I suppose I'll have to followup today. sigh

        • @chuckler I did an order too back on Monday and have heard nothing aside from the ID stuff

          • @Gracey: @Gracey
just thought I'd let you know that I called the number and got a "due to covid19 we're not answering calls" message.
            https://www.vodafone.com.au/tracking#/
^^ I found this link on their website that I could put my VF######## number into, and discovered they're still processing my credit check.

            • @Chuckler: Yeah my tracking just says "If you placed a SIM Only order and chose not to get a new SIM, there's nothing for us to send you. If you placed an order that requires a delivery, we've sent you an email with information about your order."

Vodafone website does have a livechat but I havent worked out what triggers it to popup. Just visit occasionally and keep clicking through pages and it will eventually come up down the bottom. Also seems to load eventually if you just stay on 1 page for a while.

  • Can you add AppleCare to this after purchase?

  • I don't seem to be having much luck securing the iPhone SE without being advised that I need to stay for 3 months to get the discounted price. Has anyone else experienced this? 3 people I've contacted have now said that the discount will only be applied if you stay for 3 months. If you cancel before the 3 months, you get charged the RRP of the device, which is $749 I think? Something definitely higher than the price on site though.

    • As I said above, i cancelled within 2 days of receiving the phone and was charged the discounted amount. This was through chat with 2 different vodafone rep and both said the same thing

  • Anyone else able to cancel the plan without issue??

    • I wasnt able to. On the phone they told me I have to wait 45 days before they can process a cancellation. So frustrating. Maybe I will try online chat.

      • Hm if we need to pay 2-3 months or more plan fee, I think it doesn’t worth the hassle.

      • Hi @omego84. Any luck with cancellation?

        • Haven't tried yet. I'll update during the week. Never dealing with Vodafone again. It's been a complete mess so far. On a side note I'm with telstra month to month on an old jb hi Fi plan and told telstra I was thinking of leaving and they added $10 discount for 24 months to stay. That was on chat. Better service than Voda by a mile.

          • @omego84: By the way I agree it's not worth the hassle. Guessing the phone will eventually go on sale with retailers, just buy it then! I wish I had! My time on the phone with voda has been not worth whatever saving I make if any!

            • @omego84: Thanks for let me know. Pity, it is a great price for SE. Well, I will wait for the next round bargain then

  • +1

Code "CAMSPM" for $20 off the first month incase you have to stay connected

    • Does it mean $35-$20 for first month?

    • Appears so

  • Hi Guys,

If i go for the $35 plan which is month to month (this is discounted from $45 for 12 months), and get the iphone SE 64GB for $24.95/month for 24 months, if I cancel the red plan say 2 months down the track and port to another provider eg Telstra can I still keep paying the handset repayment $24.95 to vodafone and at the same time pay for a sim only plan at telstra for example?

    • can I still keep paying the handset repayment $24.95 to vodafone

Pretty sure you'd have to pay off remaining balance of the handset when you cancel

      • Thanks

  • Is porting the number the same as cancelling?

    • Yes

  • Just chat with VF, they said I can terminate in less than a month, only pay $679 + up to $35.

  • Has anyone received theirs yet? If yes how long did it take to change from “Preparing for delivery” to dispatched?

    • From preparing to dispatched should be same day or there abouts, it was for me

      • Mines been stuck on preparing for 5 business days now?

        • Not sure but that sucks. Mine took 5 business days to get approved but once it approved it changed to preparing then dispatched within 24 hours.

          Hit em up on livechat

          • @Gracey: Yeah, live chat say it will be dispatched ASAP and it’s in stock, however over the phone they give 2 different stories saying it’s either “limited stock” or “out of stock” yet still shows as in stock on their website. May I ask what variation you got?

            • @WoodYouLikeSomeCash: I got the 128GB in the red

              • @Gracey: Oh really? That’s the exact same one I got, I wonder why it’s taking so long?

              • @Gracey: Update: Just contacted support again and was told it got “caught in the system” so they’re manually processing it now :D

                • +1

@WoodYouLikeSomeCash: That’s great you got someone who could help! Vodafone support has actually been pretty decent, cancelled my plan today no worries

  • Great deal - I also got the $20 discount when ordering online. I need an extra SIM for approx 3-6 weeks, so this was an easy way to get a discounted phone as well.

I couldn't do the mobile ID check as I only have my digital licence, so called the support number & got it all sorted. I was upgraded from the $40 (discount to $35) plan to the $50 (discount to $35) plan, so I get more data for the 3-6 weeks I'm actually going to use it (and then cancel).

I ordered the 128GB black version - confirmed the total cost for 2 months was $729, which is $679 (phone) + $35x2 (plan) - $20 (discount). Hopefully if I cancel at the end of the first month I still get the $20 discount, so it's under $700.

Just got the "preparing for delivery" email too - ETA over the phone was 1-2 business days, so likely delivery by Wed.
