A lot of phone for little money ….
Wish they did it as Android one for updates.

    • +13

Xiaomi is generally great with Android updates on their Redmi brand. My Redmi Note 5 Pro (March'2018) was on Android Nougat (7.0) when purchased. I got updates to Oreo (8.0), and Pie (9.0) in 2 years time. Also, even if the Android updates stop, Xiaomi still keeps updating MIUI, so the phone will still receive MIUI12 slated in October'2020.

And I had purchased this phone for $259 in March'2018. Still using it, no battery deterioration, nothing. I don't need a new phone, just that I dont have Band 28 and I'm not getting VoLTE due to it.
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/558457

Hence, stumbled upon this deal while searching for a phone which has Band 28. Also noted that it is the No.1 thing being considered when looking for a new phone now.

      • Yes price wise appears OK but a bit of a worry buy it from TobyDeals .

        • Whats the worry reg. TobyDeals?

        • +3

It's not just OK price wise, it's great. I bet you can hardly find another phone for the little money with the same specs. For the little money you pay you do accept some compromises. Or get an iPhone or top of the line Android

          • +2

@[Deactivated]: I ordered a redmi note 9 pro last week from tobydeals even though I was super reluctant.
Ordered midday Thursday shipped 10pm Friday and visible on tracking site

        • +1

I bought Redmi 9 pro last month from the last deal and it was delivered in around 10 days even with Melbourne lockdown. But I have seen people waiting more than that and some had even worse experience. It was my first purchase from them and the experience was good. Well can't say it will be the same next time but considering my last experience, I will definitely try them once more…

      • How's the camera ?

      • djoz… "I don't need a new phone, just that I dont have Band 28"
I scored a H version RN5 that has B28. They did exist but hard to find.

        • Great. Do you get VoLTE on your RN5, if you are using a provider that offers it?

          • @djoz: Used it on Optus and Voda. Dont have any need for VoLTE. Just wanted the better coverage when traveling.
Bought it from B&H Photo New York. The only place that sold them online to OZ.

    • -3

Xiaomi Android one phones were terrible for updates. They basically abandoned the line pretty soon after A1. Poco is the compromise they prefered.

      • Wut?? They're at A3 already!

And the updates come directly from Google.

        • +1

While Google makes the update, it's up to OEM to supply it.. Android one program rules that update needs to be pushed by OEM within a time frame after release, but Xiaomi doesn't bother to follow through with it.

A3 came out at a much higher price and weaker specs because Xiaomi was phasing it out after they got the publicity from A1. That's also why we haven't seen any mention of A4 despite it's been more than a year.

      • What are you talking about?

I have an A2 Lite, which has updated to Android 10, and is currently downloading the July security update.

      • +1

And now they've given up. You're not entirely wrong, so I tried to balance out your downvotes. Their updates are slower than others, but they do get it eventually.

If you want a good Android One phone with good, prompt updates, get a Nokia. They're missing IR blasters though, which I love.

        • I just wish they stuck to releasing a smaller amount of points instead of following the Chinese trend. Nokia is known for their build quality, they almost got the market with Nokia 7 plus, only to be foiled by their own lack of QC.

    • +3

I still have my Xiaomi Redmi Note 4, is it worth the upgrade ?

      • +2

One gem of a phone! That would be Year 2017?

        • +1

I dont remember, but it is still going strong. Looking to get RN 9 to replace my Nokia 3 which is sloowww

      • Oofff great phone but that's like a brick eyes

      • +2

The RN 4 was a legend phone for the $ and still very usable today. Best battery life!!
For this money… the RN9 would be a good replacement. I doubt if this one will have NFC? (see below).

      • I've since upgraded to a Mi A2, but my Redmi Note 3 is still kicking around (flashed with custom ROM), but it's still a great phone.

      • Had one of those too, great phone.

        • +2

The Redmi Note 3 and the later Redmi Note 4 were a complete gamechanger in many countries. The price point of phones with arguably good specifications drastically came down.

Apart from everything else, what I appreciate is the sturdiness of their phones, physically on the outer, as well as performance of the inner components. Never did I have a problem with the screen – yep I've never used a Scratch Guard on any of my Redmi Phones since 2014, and it never cracked although i've dropped it on concrete ground/floor – and also the other components like Mic, Speaker, Buttons, Fingerprint Sensor, Camera Lens, anything.

Never did I need to visit a service centre or claim warranty for any of my Redmi Phones (3 so far). That gives me so much confidence that I'm willing to jump and buy a Grey Import like this deal.

          • @djoz: You are spot on, another note is that my baby and toddler were using it too. And they weren't and still not gentle with it. It is a very tempting deal, but I will sit on it for now.

  • +17

    MediaTek

    nope

    • +1

No.2 thing being considered after Band 28
      :-D

Probably that's what is bringing down the price.

    • +7

Their chips are gradually getting better (the P90 is actually good), biggest problems used to be battery, lack of custom roms and feature set. Now they're getting the process size down (not enough, but getting there), adding some neat features (the LTE to wifi switching time is great if it's as fast as they claim) and generally pumping out a lot of CPU power for the price.

Thanks to some pretty good efficiency gains and Xiaomi sticking gigantic batteries in these things it's not so much of a problem for most of it. The custom roms though still seems to be a problem, but then they just updated the Note 7 to Android 10, so they're getting better at keeping these devices up to date.

    • +1

I'd prefer Mediatek to Qualcomm's numerous vulnerabilities at this point.

  • -4

    just missing wireless charging…

    • +11

Which phones in this price range have wireless charging?

      • +10

Some people expect everything for nothing… lmao.

        • +4

Who said I wasn't prepaid to pay more for it? (Wireless charging)

If you actually read between the lines, it could also be read as, it's a fantastic phone, so many desirable features, so much so, the only thing i'd want extra is Wireless, then it would be perfect.(which is the intent behind the post)

Nothing wrong with holding out/ wanting a phone that would tick all your boxes. Not sure what's with all the hate?

          The see me rollin'….

          • @wisc: You might be ready to pay more for wireless charging.

Xiaomi most likely knows which phones they sell far more often and what budget most of their consumers are looking for,

which is most likely why they aren't adding such a feature. Costs more and majority of people probably don't even use it.

            • @Tehcookiemonsta: and, now you have found the reason i originally posted the above… to highlight it for those that do, and for those it doesn't matter for, go ahead and buy it!

that said, it may not have NFC as highlighted in one of the posts below as well.

    • +1

Yep, would tick all my boxes if it has one.

  • Very big phablom

  • +1

hmm just be wary my understanding is 700MHZ doesn't always necessary mean b28.

read it a while ago, trying to google to get more info:
    from my readings, 700Mhz could also be: b12, b13, b14, b17, B29, B44, B67, B68, B85
    see:
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LTE_frequency_bands

I'm pretty sure they are all different.

so not sure if a phone supports 700Mhz, if it supports all of them, or could just support 1, for me unless i can find something that specifically says it supports 28, i assume it doesnt.

Thought I think this one is pretty safe given its an ozb favorite.

    https://www.mi.com/global/redmi-note-9-pro/specs/

states B28 there as well, so think youd be pretty safe.

  • How is it compared to Oppo A52?

    • +1

Oppo A72 still available for $249 but locked to Optus & not dual sim.

      • Did anyone who ordered online get the phone? My order was confirmed on 10 Aug, no update since! I have a feeling it will get cancelled eventually!

    • Would like to know this as well, looking to get my mum a new phone and has to be dual sim.

      • +1

I've been using a52 for over a week now , seems good value.

  • +3

Apply CART3 at Checkout to get further 3% off. Deal title updated.
    $236 - 3% = $228.92

  • Advice please …this one or the Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro??? Thank you :)

    • +3

      Note 9 is newer.
Both Note 8 Pro and Note 9 use Mediatek.
I'd rather suggest you take Redmi Note 8 (Snapdragon), rather than Note 8 Pro, have a thought about it.

      • I'd rather suggest you take Redmi Note 8 (Snapdragon), rather than Note 8 Pro, have a thought about it.

Yep, I have Note 8. its a good phone but I need a bit bigger screen for reading, so I'm currently looking for a good deal on Note 9 Pro.

      • Is there more of an advantage with Snapdragon?? I really only use my phone to take a few photos, bit of social media, phone calls and emails.

        • +1

For your needs, no. It will be fine.

          • @Cheeper: What exactly is the disadvantage of Mediatek then, in particular. If you exclude gaming, then, is it worth thinking about if the phone has MT or SD? I'm talking at this price point. Not otherwise.

            • @djoz: Mostly to do with rom swapping. If you are not into that dont worry.
SD's are usually better performing and give better battery life. In the case of this phone you will be amazed at the battery life you get and the performance will not disappoint regardless. The 1/3 higher cost for the SD (pro) version is hard to justify if your needs dont warrant it.
There are plenty of reviews on the net especially on YouTube. For the money you would be hard pressed to find something with this much value with the same quality.
One main difference with the RN9 over the S and Pro versions is the body… the RN9 is plastic while the other two are metal & glass. Wont matter as most phones up until now have been plastic.
For the money this is a great phone.

              • +1

@Cheeper: I've watched a few you tube reviews and it's just creates more confusion!!! I am pretty set on the RN8 Pro don't ask me why … having said that I find that in general Xiaomi phones are great value.

                • +3

@sabby32: I still have the Redmi 1S purchased way back in August 2014 when most didn't even know Xiaomi and it still works fine. Battery is good, even 6 years down the line. These guys have an amazing sturdiness built into their phones.

                  • +1

@djoz: Agree. My first was a RN4X and still use it as a backup. Battery is like the day I got it.
No doubt a premium product that is sadly let down by slack model identification and shady retailers.

                  • +1

@djoz: I too have owned a Xiaomi since 2014, I had the Xiaomi 3, then upgraded to the 4C. The Xiaomi 3 was working very well until the day it went into fastboot mode and it's just stuck on that now. If anyone knows how to revive it, please throw your ideas this way. I have tried many different suggestions without success. The Xiaomi 4C which I am currently using, just has battery issues hence looking for an upgrade.

                • @sabby32: RN9 Pro is $327.86 with 3% off (CART3). Definitely worth the extra few $ over the 8 Pro.

                  • @Cheeper: Don't mind spending a little extra as long as I get something that will last me a few years. I use my phones till they can no longer be revived. Thanks for your input. Now the question is, are Toby Deals reliable??? Have read a number of negative reviews … I usually only purchase from Gear Best.

                    • @sabby32: Buy using paypal and you will be covered. Gear Best and Bang Good can give you problems too just like most online grey market sellers.
99% have no problem with Toby's. The main problem I see is the delivery time (if they have stock?). Biggest delay usually occurs once it lands in Australia. I would expect 2 - 3 weeks for delivery.
Personally, I would buy from them but pay using paypal.

                      • @Cheeper: Thanks for your input. Yes would definitely buy using paypal!!

                • @sabby32: The RN8's have Googles ARCore, if that is something of a bonus.

            • @djoz:

What exactly is the disadvantage of Mediatek then, in particular

A lot of the mediatek chipsets don't fully support gcam where as most snapdragons have full support. It would be a dealbreaker for some like me that would love significantly improved camera quality over stock cam, specially with these cheap phones.

              • @CVonC: Redmi Note 8 Pro has has gcam support iirc.

                • @BartholemewH: Yeah there are ports for it, but they're not 100% stable. It's great they're doing it for the MT chipset though.

        • Yes imo for gcam support

  • +1

1080P 30FPS is a major issue… The camera is 48MP and really should have a much better video resolution

1080P 60FPS is a minimum, but the 48MP camera should technically handle 4K

    • Well the Redmi Note 9S has a 48MP Camera with 4K@30fps, 1080p@30/60/120fps, 720p@960fps, gyro-EIS but then again it comes at a price.
At Tobydeals, I see it retails at $315 for a 6GB/128GB variant.

      • +3

That's my exact point… The 48MP camera is capable of 4K. The processor and GPU is also capable, however, this might just be a marketing strategy to differentiate the multiple classes of their phones

An Antutu Score of 200000 should mean that the phone is capable of capturing and processing 4K video - Since other phones with similar and even lower scores have 4K cameras, some even managing 4K 60FPS

        • +1

Phones have been capable of 4K video recording for a long time, there were even snapdragon 800 phones that could do it. So yeah this hardware should be capable of doing it,

          • @Ronnnie: Exactly, even the Galaxy S5 could do 4K, which technically means 4K 60FPS should also be possible

However, as I said - Product differentiation :(

According to this, the G85 isn't capable of 4K video recording. Unless you meant that MediaTek is the one not allowing it and not Xiaomi if that was the case.

          • @HaveANiceDay: I wasn't talking about MediaTek or Xiaomi in particular

However that website depicts my exact point - It states that the processor can handle recording at up to 240fps, yet the phone is still limited to 30FPS 1080P

            • +1

@Zackeroo: 60fps is coming soon via an update, and I feel like the 240fps will be limited to a very short amount of time due to even flagship processors not being able to do it for a long period of time either, but I do agree they should have that option; they could possibly implement it in a later update.

  • +6

New TobyDeals Customers, Apply TOBY10 at Checkout to get a further $10 off.
    $236 - $10 = $226.

    • +3

Doesn't work. 300AUD minimum. Here's what it said in the email when I registered…

Use the code [Toby10] to save A$10 on any A$300+ orders.

    • Aw man, could have used this last week when I pulled the trigger on a Note 9 Pro…

  • There doesn't seem to be any call recording option on this phone so you will have to install something else if you need that feature. Edit: Umm.. Why the downvote? Google Redmi Note 9 call recording. It's an auto-feature I need so I'll keep my Note 7 that has it for now.

    • -3

It's a borderline illegal feature. Basically a wiretap

      • +2

It's legal in QLD if you are in the conversation and using it for legal purposes only, eg if you need to use it for court. Audio and video body cams in a few years are also going to be as common as dash cams are now.

      • It is legal in the people's republic of cheena

        • -2

          "GINA"

      • -1

Where is it illegal? Sounds like BS

      • It's not like you'll get charged for it. It just won't be allowed in court.

    • +1

I had this issue with my OPPO. Simply changed location from AU to UK to solve this. My last 3 Xiaomi's (Note 5, Mi 8 and 9T) all had call recording as default, even in Australia. Just make sure you check your legal requirements to record.

  • -3

WARNING!!!!! Their phone is not brand new. i bought twice from them hoping for the 2nd time it will be different. phone received no plastic wrap and especially sealed is broken. contact them and all the response from them are useless. you have been warn

    • +1

I bought a Redmi Note 7 from them and it was new and the phone arrived in about a week. The bonus screen protector they included had a manufacturing fault but they gave me a $10 refund and I was able to get the same one including delivery at that price from ebay.

    • +1

It is brand new. Its common practice for grey import to have their seals broken. This is because the distributer gives it to them like this intended only for the overseas market so can't be sold locally as they buy their stock cheaper

      • you just assumed that. if it is common why wouldn't they just say that instead of denying everything and take no responsibility.

        • They do say that. It's been common knowledge. Your issues might of been lost in translation but ozb know that majority get sent with the manufacturer seal broken.

you assumed it wasn't brand new, yet you forgot you weren't buying from Australia it seems.

      • Not one of the grey import phones i've ever bought came with manufacturer seals broken.

      • I have never received one that was not factory sealed but it used to happen.
The reason was that dodgy sellers would get cheaper CN market intended phones and flash them with a global rom. Usually the band capability in CN phones is less than factory global intended phones.
I have not seen this done in recent times as a means to trick buyers but some sellers do still sell phones marked as CN in their description.
I have never heard of a reflashed unit from Toby Deals.

    • In addition to what Dezeption said, they sometimes open the packaging (thus breaking the seal) to change the language to English.
