  • But man it's ugly!

    • apparently the picture is wrong. I called the store and it's actually the Essentials Edition that is $249 online. if you want to double-check with your store, you can call them on 1300 633 423 and they will transfer you to your local store.

  • OMG… WTF!!!
    Who cares if it's ugly…
That price for a REAL (brand-name) ext' 1 TB HDD.

    • hehe … ROFL!!

I just registered to reply to your comment. Thats Gold!

    • LOL. You have to realise that not everyone is hiding their external hard disk under their desks in the open working environment where people judge you by the clothes you wear, the mobile phone you use, and the style of your external hard drive enclosure!!

      • Good point!

Nothing says loser like a fugly external harddrive.

I keep mine on my desk in a hollowed out Bible with airholes in the bottom.

  • I couldn't find this item anywhere in the store. Is this real?

    • I rang my local Officeworks and asked if they had stock.

Spoke to some idiot there who said he didn't know anything about it, had no stock, no catalogue, no nothing, go away.

I rang Head Office and complained. They rang the local manager who said they had dozens of units in stock and available.

Moral: Don't take no from an idiot for an answer.

  • The catalogue is old and incorrect

The elements never game in 1tb (640gb being the largest)

I went to the store and asked as well.

    • please read the comments before voting negative. and what do you mean "the catalogue is old"? go to http://cataloguecentral.com.au/ and you will find it under "latest catalogues"

    • Or call 1300 633 423 and complain about your local store like I did.

They'll change their tune quick smart.

      • could you please confirm you got an WD Essentials Edition?

        • I’m popping in to get one after work tonight.

I don't know what they are, just the OW part number which is in the catalogue.

For $199 it shouldn't be too bad, and is probably the same one they are selling for $249 at the moment!

    • Hebe, you are always able to revoke your -ve vote in the "Votes" tab at the top of the thread…

    • Am I the only one that doesnt understand hebe's post?!?!?!

What makes you think it doesnt come in 1TB?? http://www.wdc.com/en/products/Products.asp?DriveID=498

The catalogue is coming out on the 31st of July 2008

I just came home from office works and I have in my hands a 1TB elements series WD portable HD after picking up my customer order (read my post below)

  • so did you manage to get one, Horizon? may I know which store is that?

    • Not yet.

I'm popping in after work tonight.

My local store is Artarmon NSW, which is open til 9pm tonight - I think.

But if you ring the 1300 number you should be able to confirm local stock.

  • alright, will do.. thanks a lot! ^_^

  • Just called the VIC head office, the lady had to check twice and call me back. Eventually she advised this catalogue is to go on sale 31/07/08.

    • A case of one hand not knowing what the other is doing.

When I rang OW HO earlier today, 'Chris' advised me, after she rang the local OW, that there was stock there and available now.

Nothing was said about waiting to buy it.

I will be muchly pissed if I go there later and find they refuse to sell it!

  • I called them, visited one of the local store here in melbourne and talked to the manager. i found out that they will be receiving the item next week. So i guess what iorichan said was probably right, let's just wait and hunt it again next week then.. lol

  • OK, I just rang the local OW again, the night staff didn't know anything about it because the day manager had gone home.

However, in conversation, they said if I bought a printout of the front page of the catalogue they will price match!?!

I'd ring and check with your local branch before you go to too much trouble, as it does seem that the official sale begins later this week or so.

  • HERE is the REAL DEAL….

I went in to the office works store and they all had no idea about….because…the caterlog comes out on 31st July and they havent got the caterlog instore or via email yet.

HINT - ASK for a CUSTOMER ORDER to be done using the product ID (WDE1U1TBA) under the description in the caterlog and pay the $199 instore which guarantees you one when it comes in. Which according to the Manager is either the 26th or 27th of July and YES you can Buy it/Pick it up before the caterlog is due out!!!! Remember that Office works doesnt have "SALES" or specials anymore. It is always everyday low prices and they just feature products in the caterlog.

    • Sounds good.

In my previous post I mentioned my local OW offered to price match their own catalogue if I bought a printout!

      One nirvana, many paths…

  • UPDATE Just pick up my 1TB WD essentials portable HD from office works after work only 48 hours after I completed the customer order!!!! :) They have still not received any stock in the store but there are plenty in the warehouse I am told. SO you better be quick you want get your mitts on one before they are shipped out to stores if they havent been already!!!

I am one happy man :)

    • I just got back from the local OW.

I walked in and asked for one, they said they didn’t have any, I insisted, the manager and salesguy disappeared out the back for 5 mins and came back with an armful.

I paid me $199 and went home

  • hey guys, I just got one from the OW at QV Centre on Russell st. in Melbourne CBD. They have about 30 items in stock, so better be quick ^_^

  • Thanks to Dansor for good value item posting.

This is what happened to me today -
Found post thought it was a great buy so headed off to Officeworks (Taren Point NSW) to buy it during lunch break. Got there and price tag says $249. Found a salesperson and asked whats the deal - showed him the printout of the Ozbargain page but given it wasnt a "proper" catalogue it was not acceptable. So unfortunately i couldnt buy it for $199. Didnt have the ID number on me so couldnt get them to check.

Went outside rang the H/O who didnt even know about the sale. They were offering to order one for me for $349!! WTF. thanks but no thanks. I agree with Horizon comments - no communication between stores and H/O.

Just a observation - i think should put the period of when the sale is on so people are aware upfront what the deal is. didnt realise until i read all the comments that sale technically starts on 31/07/2008.
Also the link Dansor provided for the catalogues doesnt have it. Officeworks is not a participating store.

People who have purchased one, it would be great if you can you post your opinions on it. Does it have a fan enclosed? i heard its better to have a fan for external hard drives.

Side note - i stopped by HarveyNorman on the way back and they were selling the WD 1 TB "Home Edition" for $249. Extra $50 for Firewire 400 and eSATA connection. Anyone thinks its worth it??? might buy that instead.

    • Thanks for sharing the experience. I'll put the support for putting in a starting date for sales that have one this weekend.

    • Read my and Dr Lobster posts.

I went in last night and bought one for $199 from Artarmon OW!

The actual part number on the box is: WDE1U1000A which is slightly different from the catalogue number (WDE1U1TBA).

The drive is called “WDElements” and IS different from the $249 unit.

The very latest catalogue number is OW2660.

      Try again!

      Always have your facts right.

Always insist on seeing the manager if there’s a problem, that’s what they are there for.

    • Kendo,

Which Harvey Norman you can get Home edition for $249? please let me know. Do they have in catalogue?

I think it is worth it if $249 and if it is in catalogue it is even better, bring to Office work and they will beat by 5% :)

      Thanks

  • I'd be interested to know the actual model of the hard drive inside the case? Am a a fan of the WD10EACS Green Power so would be interested to know if they are using those.

    • Send me $15 +GST and I'll open it up and have a look :)

      • Obvious next question is if you open this one up does it void the warranty? In deals such as the recently posted Mwave one where they put it together themselves it does not afaik.

        • Send me $15 +GST and I’ll tell you if it voids the warranty : )

  • Send me $15 +GST and I’ll tell you if it voids the warranty : )

    • LOL, can it be excl GST? ;o)

      • Have to be cash then!

        And no receipt.

  • is this good im planning on buying it. ive got the catalogue here on my table

  • The 1TB essentials is $199 again. Down from $219
