I’ve read some reviews regarding the ASUS budget gaming laptops cooling issues and not the best screens

Ps. Sorry for poor editing, published this on my phone

  • The Lenovo's with 1650s were also pretty cheap recently, so as usual JB you've done it again.

Unless your after anything but a 1650 or these specific models, look elsewhere. Even the cheapest 2060 model "on special" is 2,000.

    • Big Price jump from 1200 to 2000 though.

      And if you know
Of better deals, post it ? (I am actually after a gaming laptop but don’t really want to spend over $1200 )

The Lenovo Legion 5 4800H, GT1650Ti could be acquired for $1250 with cashback on Wednesday last week. JB Hifi should actually have the A15, the Dell G5 and the Lenovo Legion 5 on display. Pop into one of the store and have a feel which one you like the most.

One advice, don't get the A15, the screen is terrible, when you compare the 3 side by side, you will see what I am talking about. The lenovo maybe has the best colour reproduction, the Dell is very close behind, the A15 is noticeably worse than the other 2 though.

        • +2

From my research the Legion 5 with the 300nit 100% RGB screen looks to be the best in the price range. I hope it comes back on sale soon.

      • +1

Oh and add the Omen into the mix as well. That is a good laptop with decent thermals and screen. A better buy than the A15.

        • Appreciated fellas. I didn’t even know Lenovo made gaming laptops till I saw the last few deals. Never really considered them cos always known them for their business laptops.

  • Hi,

I purchased a laptop from Jb Hi-Fi 9 days ago using my normal debit card. The laptop cost was around $2500 and Store gave me a discount of $200 which dropped the price to $2300 and I was told that is the best they can do. Now I saw the same laptop cost only $1999 which a 20% discount. Anyway I can get the difference back?

    Thank you

    • +1

maybe if you havntopened it the will credit it against a different model. otherwise i doubt it.

    • +1

you can, they offer the refund if its within 7 days i believe just tell them as it is

    • +4

If they don’t want to refund you the difference take it back to the store with box and all accessories and return it and buy the new one with discounted price.

    • +1

Next time purchase through a credit card that offers price protection (such as 28 degrees)

      • Commonwealth Debit Mastercard Platinum offers price protection aswell, and it is only a debit card.

        • Any associated fees? Platnium debit cards usually have

          • @kehuehue: No fees for me, I just got upgraded a couple years ago. I hardly use it tho as there is no points scheme.

    • +1

If it hasn't changed from a couple years back, there's 14 day price guarantee for the stores local to me (I assume it's nationwide because they said it was a company policy).

    • +1

Yeah, I've done this before. They're usually good within a 2 week period.

    • Got the refund thanks!

1650 is crap value compared to a 1650ti.

There is currently a conspiracy theory circulating that Intel are paying laptop manufacturers to deliberately sabotage Ryzen based laptops. A teardown of the Tuf A15 for example reveals some pretty poor design decisions and inadequate thermal cooling. This also happened in the Dell G series laptops

    • +1

Some laptops even had coverings over the air intake causing the processor to down clock due to thermals.

    • I mean what possible reason could they have for reducing the number of intake/exhaust vents (don't think static pressure is a concern in a laptop) or changing the pathways internally. Its essentially the same boards but Intel CPU vs AMD cpu, the layout barely differs (if at all).

And given Intel's sketchy attempts previously this has to the smartest one they've come up with yet.
Delaying AMD releases by 1-2 months is easily enough to disrupt that years release schedule and retailers will be projecting orders based on the first months of sales.

AMD fanboys have nothing better to think of?

  • I hear that the new HP Omen 15 is pretty good with thermals. Is this correct? Waiting for the 4800H with 1660ti to be available.

    • Yes the Legion 5 and Hp Omen 15 have the best thermals for Ryzen. I know the Legion 5 allows the 4800h to draw 69 watts in performance mode, whilst still keeping it cool.

      • Keep in mind that the legion is also a lot more quite under full load yet allowing the CPU to use a lot more power.

Also with the legion you have the ability to upgrade the battery from 60wh to 80wh.

I would have gone with the omen over the Lenovo just cos of the looks but the size of the battery is the deal-breaker for me.

Got the legion for 1250 with the free m500 RGB mouse so can't complain.

  • Great price for the ROG Zephyrus G14

    • They only have the gtx 1650 version, a bit underwhelming for a 2.2k laptop.

    • How is the screen? I'm worried about the 250nits and 45% NTSC colour accuracy

    • Do you know if you can add in an older style non M2 sata ssd? I have a 2tb one in my laptop currently and I'd like to keep using it. The omen looks to be the best option there but obviously 256gb isn't enough overall.

  • +4

Can't believe they advertise 1650 as a 'gaming' graphics card. It can't do 1080p 60fps in most modern titles, and it will keep getting worse. I think 1660ti or 2060 should be the bare minimum for a gaming laptop for it to last at least a few years.

    • Are there any sub $1500 laptops with a 1660?

      • -2

Sub $1500 is pretty easy to find for a 1660/1660ti, this deal actually came up a few days ago: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/558980
It has a Ryzen 4800H which is pretty much the best laptop processor you can get at this price point, as well as a 1650ti 4GB. Plus, you could get 7% cash back as well, bringing it down to $1390.

        • Yeh but you said don't get anything less than a 1660. That Legion 5 is a 1650. There are no laptops with a 1660 at that price point.

      • Gaming and sub $1500 really don't go together. Price compare with the likes of Scorptec, MWave, PC Case Gear etc. Whirlpool guys can help with builds and pricing

  • most aren't 20%.
    Am i missing something?

    • There are some exclusions (the ones aren’t on special are those exclusions )
