          Look - for the price these are pretty good. I have some decent KEFs in the living room but was looking for something for relatively near-field usage in the office. I have audienced these at a mates place who is a producer and has some pretty bloody expensive Genalecs next to them. The Edifiers are definitely no match, but they're definitely not 20 times worse as the price would suggest.

          I guess I'm lucky I don't have the "golden" ears lol. I can't hear the difference.
          I "can" afford good bookshelf speaker but I "won't" because I "can't" hear the difference

              @mlburnian: Not true. I have had Focals. Appreciated the setup. But these "cheap" ones are good for tv, plugging phone via AUX etc. In fact, when we go on boat trips, all just use the "cheap" portable BT ones.

              Edifier, in fact, are not bad for what they cost.

              Edit. And a set of Boston Accoustics too…

I don't understand the concept of sounds good for the price, it either sounds good or it doesn't…music doesn't sound good on these. The analogy with cars is a moot point, as you only need to spend another 400 bucks to get very good sounding 2.0 system

                  @mlburnian: Another 400 bucks would be 3.5x the price, not a particularly fair comparison. If there is a good deal on a pair of bookshelf speakers that you would recommend, perhaps you could post that as a deal?

                  It's all relative to someone's budget and music expectations

                  The fact you think 500-600 bucks gets you a very good sounding 2.0 system would have plenty of people with actual high end systems telling you that 'I don't understand how you can think that's good for music and sounds good'.

                  You think a $500 system sounds good for music, someone here will appreciate these and think they sound good, and others might have a several thousand dollar system and think yours sounds terrible.

                  Personally I wouldn't take any 'golden ear' opinions from someone who thinks a 500 buck 2.0 system is actually 'good' in the realm of audio setups.

                    @SBOB: Good comment, and factual. I never understood why some pay $3-500 for a pair of 2.0 when they are equally bad (Focal/Boston Acoustics days) as the logitech stuff.

                    Not until my ex-boss asked me why spend the few thousand dollars when the same can be had from a $200 set logitech. He then goes on to explain how his floor standing units are "limited" , "engineered" , and enclosure is hand crafted - all didnt make much sense to me. All in all, he's a different league, anything less than 6 digits is an insult to his ears.

                    P.S. These days, still using the pretty looking Harman Kardon Soundsticks from many years ago. High note might not be accurate, nor low is accurate and punchy, but hey, it works.

                  @mlburnian: Cool bro. Then you have a long way to go. My boss in NY blows half a mio on set up at home. Anything less, don't insult his ears… people will laugh at you when you tell them about KEF or Boston Acoustics.

                  P.S. heard it once, definitely good. But my ears are not trained enough to tell the major difference.

                    @[Deactivated]: Not sure how this turned into a pi$$ing contest, I was telling people that for few hundred more you can get much better sound. It's common sense that if you can afford 150 bucks you can most probably afford few hundred more. Obviously the return diminishes as you go into the thousands.
                    The people bringing in high end systems clearly missed the point.

                  If you spend a mil, that system will blow away your KEFs of the world. Does that make KEF 50 worthless as per audio reproduction?

            @oranglama: I think price always plays a factor . Bang for Buck / value for quality etc etc. Everyone has a budget / limit and they want to get the best they can for that price. Saying that, I think also when it comes to hearing the difference, its never instant, or hardly ever anyway. A lot of the times its about training / tuning your ear to better quality, over time your ear will learn to appreciate and comprehend the better quality sounds, THEN when you go back to equipment which doesnt sound as good, it will be very noticeable and instant.

          you are right these are really not in the same league as my Klipsch Lascalar's but my Klipsch take a little too much room on my desk so the Edifiers will do.

    Dual RCA output - so these would work for record player via preamp? I.e. record player > preamp > these guys?

    And would dual RCA mean 2xR,2xL, or 1xR+L?

    Forgive my ignorance, trying to drag myself into some form of understanding about these things.

      Yes, dual RCA inputs.

      That is exactly what I do. TT > Preamp > Edifier Speakers.

              @clandestino: @clandestino Ah I get where your problem is. You use a vintage amp like myself. (I use a Sansui AU-505). On these vintage models, there is no 'line out' as modern amps, so the only way to connect is via the 'headphone' output on the front.

              You should double check your headphone output size but you will likely need a '3.5mm Socket Female to 6.35mm 1/4-Inch Jack Plug Male Stereo Audio Adaptor' and a '3.5 mm to RCA cable'.

    I have these and I absolutely love them! They look classy too. Slightly light on the bass for my tastes but still very solid sound. I also then bought the s350db for another room. Also phenomenal for the price.

    Are these better than the R1280DB which occasionally sneak under a hundred dollars? Comparing the specs they seem much of a muchness, or have I missed a critical difference?

      The 1280 has a narrower response (75-18,000 Hz) compared to the 1850 and 1700 (60-20,000 Hz).

      I read a review that said these are slightly bigger for one of the drivers so technically are better, however the performance is pretty similar and the difference in looks is most likely to be the deciding factor.

      I have the R1280DB and very happy with them

      Short answer : yes. Optical audio in works best, haven't tried automatically pairing Bluetooth to the speakers from tv but works from phones/laptops for single connection use.

      Long answer: these take up 15cm on either side of a TV, which make for a pretty wide soundstage. I have them beside a 32" tv for close viewing and they work well but a wider tv would be different. If your tv is wall mounted above then no problem I guess

          Wow yeah pretty wide. But if you only intend to sit in front, home-theatre style, it doesn't make too much of a difference. Being about 2.5m away would be ideal I think.
          Surround sound with front soundbar/woofer would obviously be ideal but costs more, requires an audio controller and more space, etc.
          These are a great product for the price as far as I've experienced anyway

      Just use the RCA. That's what I did. Easy. Great sound. They're not big so you should be able to position them fine.

    These are fine as I have a pair. (I moved to a new state and needed something temporary). But IMO if you can be bothered and dont mind clutter at your desk. I would be a chifi amplifier and an old pair of bookshelf speakers that no one cares about like Wharfedale Diamond IIIs, this would all work out the same in price but it sounds a lot better to my ears.

    These speakers are the absolute duck's nuts.
    I only replaced them as my PC speakers when I went to a full hifi 5.1 system. The Edifiers are astonishing.
    Still worth it at $197.
