Background
With working remotely, I have found myself in dire need of a solid laser printer and scanner combo (predominantly used for printing/scanning word documents and powerpoint decks). Whilst I was willing to concede on colour, must-haves were the full duplex ADF scanning (i.e. can scan both sides), full duplex printing, good app support, wifi/networking, and ability to scan straight to email or cloud services (eg OneDrive). Given my work involves a lot of documents, I needed the automatic duplexing on both scan and print (rather than the manual take it out and put it back in).

After much research, I finally settled on either the Brother MFC-L2750DW or the Brother MFC-L3770CDW (for colour)… only to find neither of these were readily available or were at inflated prices vs previous deals on OzBargain.

Found the HP Color Laserjet Pro M479fdw as a suitable option (don't get confused with the other M479's which confusingly come in M479dw (simplex scanning) or M479fnw (simplex printing)) - refer to HP's own guidance here. It's also really difficult to find reviews of printers which aren't overglorified promotions by a seller, or just someone summarising a spec sheet… but this guy's review on Youtube which showed off the UI and features helped convince me: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hs_V7eN7Fmg

Whilst I'm mindful the Officeworks price beat is potentially an option since they stock it and it's currently listed at $767 with some stock in Australia, I spent significant time discussing options with the staff member at MediaForm via chat on potential alternatives and offering genuine insight into pricing/service/etc to be worth my business. For those who are interested, they also suggested the Lexmark CX431ADW for $480 as an alternative which met my needs - but I didn't have a lot of confidence in the mobile app (based on what limited information I could find) and the consumables whilst slightly cheaper, had much lower yields than the HP such that it would cost more in the long run so I figured the $100 saving would probably be eaten away anyway.

TL;DR Colour laser printer, 28ppm, duplex scan, duplex print, good mobile app, good UI, seems to be a reasonable price for a mid-range printer/scanner for August 2020.

  • how much are the toners?

    • +1

From what I could find, ~$400-600 for a set of 4 toners.

      • Ouch! and for High Yield ones double that price :(

        • +1

Most affordable is brother with compatible high quality aftermarket toners

  • Nice write up, will this take generic toner?

    • I believe there’s an option to disable the authentication but haven’t tried myself on this.

    Something to keep in mind:

She and her team discovered that a single day of toner-particle exposure was enough to disturb the activity of genes associated with metabolism, immune response and other essential biological processes in the rat models. Overall — taking into account all 21 days of exposure and testing — the researchers observed genomic changes linked to cardiovascular, neurological and metabolic disorders.

Building on these results, Guo and her colleagues have since investigated the genomic changes that Singaporean printing company workers have experienced. In many respects, the workers' genomes changed the same ways the rats' genomes did. link

You should stay out of sunlight, it too can mutate our genome

and don’t drink large amounts of water, it’s toxic.

Or eat, fish, red meats, greens, legumes oh also don't play in soil that where the anthrax hides

          • @DoesntEvenMatter: But let me tell you all about a fantastic product called asbestos.

Remember, that tin foil hat could give you Alzheimer’s…

            • @pegaxs: Ooo you know which hat I like, you know the mad hatters hat. That was sweet, it's like you a whole new person when you put it on

  • +1

I think you could've done a little bit more research :)
The MFC-L3770CDW is basically the same as the 3750 (just an officeworks exclusive model number)
    https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/brother-wi…

That's showing as $397… Which seems about $150 cheaper than your HP printer.

    • +1

      Great printer

    • The Brother MFC-L3750CDW is a LED printer and not Laser.

The HP M479fdw is a Laser printer.

What is the difference? See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_saDCwsB9Ww

      • LED has so many advantages, size being the biggest. Much more compact, faster, quieter and lighter. LED Its the future tech for it rn

    • +1

I'm actually looking at that model … does is do duplex scanning, though?
Couldn't find an answer for this one, so didn't pull the trigger yet …

    • Incorrect the 3745 =3750. The 3770 has extra features

    • I did see that one but couldn’t find any nearby stock and pretty sure it didn’t have duplex ADF.

    • Personally I would avoid Brother at all, got 9340 and only work for 1.5 yrs with less than 3000 prints, the roller shredded itself into pieces and never working again. Now just used it as a scanner only.

      • what about warranty, ACCC? The printer should have a page count, <3k pages is not good

  • Personally I perfer Brother printer, the consumables are cheaper for generic toners.

I have so many HP MFP at workplace and they are problematic. The scan to email is a pain to setup with Office 365, although their web interface looks much nicer than brother. Who cares about the web interface if you only need to set and forget?

HP uses chips to 'track' the toner usage, but many models of brother MFP (not all of them I know) just use software or combination keys to reset toners, which is much easier to deal with.

I got L8690CDW from TGG commercial (sub $600) three months back and it is great machine. A set of 4 colours generic toner, high yields one, only cost me around $100-$120 on eBay - they can be cheaper if you look harder.

When you buy printers, make sure you check the ongoing cost as I don't find HP that friendly on their price on toners.

    • It's still at the TGG Commercial at $577

What is the benefit of this one over L3750CDW?

  • I have MFP M428fdw. It is amazing. I was going to buy this but I looked at toner prices…it is basically a whole brand new printer…

  • I got the 479dw listed at $400 at their eBay store last year on a 20% off sale ($320+12 postage).

    • It’s depressing to see how prices have changed for everything this year.

  • Excellent write up, thanks mate. Goes into detail that I would definitely waste weeks researching myself. I've been looking for a new printer, and I think you've sold me!

    Thanks for posting.

    • Thanks. Read the comments above though as some would’ve reached a different conclusion to me or held out for better pricing. For me though I really needed a printer for my work and couldn’t find stock of any of the other brother models.

      • +1

Cheers mate. But no way I'm buying Brother at any price. Horrible experiences with their products and will never buy another one again.
My old HP Laserjet however lasted years. I'm happy to give them another go (but use generic cartridges).
Your linked printer definitely has the option to turn off the authentication mode (downloaded the instructions), so that's not a concern either.

        • +1

Honestly I was in a similar boat to you - Brother seemed to have great reviews because it was cheap and cheerful, and feature packed for the price vs HP… but if the Brother devices are all out of stock at the sale prices and you're paying above sticker price from the few who do have stock, then it calls into question some of that value proposition. The HP is admittedly more expensive but for me I've also had great success with HP over the years (my first was an HP Deskjet 660c if that's an indicator!) and even used HP Laserjets at work for a long time (before we switched to Canon multi function devices).

  • +1

fyi available for $451 @ the hp student store too

    • Damn. I guess doesn’t apply if not eligible :(

  • I have 2 kids and they print A LOT. Have tried several printers (HP/EPSON/CANON) and used generic cartridges but at the end generics always fail. Don't know if it is due to firmware upgrade. So I now have a refillable ink tank printer which is expensive to buy ($650) but inks are cheap. Just my 2 cents.

  • Just FYI - I don't really see this as a bargain. Maybe by about $3.

My company sells these at a regular price of $579….always. That's not a special that's about 10% margin on normal wholesale price.

Good printer to be sure but not a bargain.

I think the challenge for me was finding stock in Sydney which could be delivered within a few days. I got mucked around with various online sellers before I found MediaForm who claimed to have stock but then upon ordering or discussing they said it was outdated and could take a few weeks/months/etc.

      • +1

Fair call - Stock on printers is a REAL big problem for us at the moment also so that's understood.

Dicker Data (Distributor) currently has decent stock of these apparently, so if anyone wants to order through their local IT store just tell them to order through Dicker.

        Regards,
        Ed.

  • Anything supporting AirPrint?

    • +1

This printer supports it - as does pretty much every other network connected printer I considered/researched. Good to see that it's become standard.

  • Hi Guys

I'm just after a cheap, laser MFC printer which has cheap refills. For home use. Can anyone recommend?

    Many thanks in advance.

    • Any specific features you need (eg colour, duplex scan, duplex print, cloud apps, etc)? Or just cheapest possible laser MFC? Not inkjet?

… and how soon do you need it?

      • Just Colour, scan, possibly duplex but not really too important. No cloud apps necessary. Not inkjet and preferably laser MFC.

Not needed urgently, but if I could pick one up now and knock it off my list, it would be great.

Also one where refills aren't too expensive. Don't care if the ink is generic or aftermarket.

        What are your thoughts?

        • I'd go with the MFC-L3745, generic toner set is about ~170ish everyday, sales ~150 but it's LED someone here thinks that's shit but I think it's great

          • @DoesntEvenMatter: Thanks Guys, I'll buy that one.

What do you think is a good / fair price?

            • @Budgetcuts: The MFC-L3745 is the same as the MFC-L3750 but the 3750 is exclusively available to officeworks and is about 100 cheaper. Stocks are just the issue, generally its $398

        • Sounds like the brother described above offers best bang for buck for you. Biggest challenge is finding stocks a a sensible price unless you want to pay a premium on eBay or something.

          • @jace88: I happened to be in my local OW today and noticed they just got stock of the L2750 so if you are willing to drop colour then that may be an option. It’s pretty much full price like most laser multifunctions you can find in stock.
