what would make someone buy the B550 over the B570?

  • +1

Computer parts go in the computing category btw, not electronics.

    • Cheers :)

FYI my shipping estimate is 1-2 months which means you may miss the Steam Gift Card promo may be over.

    • Hmmmm true. Ill make a note of that. Thanks for the heads up.

  • What CPU should I pair this with? Any suitable ones on sale. Was thinking more AMD than Intel.

    • This only works with AMD btw.

But for a mid-high ish end board like this you’d probably want to pair it with a 3700x or 3900x

With a Strix board with an overkill VRM layout it's made for high end CPU's and for people into overclocking

    • I'm pairing up 3900X with this Mobo.

The CPU doesn't OC well but this mobo is built well, has lots of great features and good longevity.

On what planet is a mid tier chipset board at over $300 a bargain?

    • What exactly makes their board mid tier??

      • +1

        The 'B' in B550.

        • Go on..

          • +2

            @vash5: X570 - High end
            B550 - Middle end
            A520 - Low end

what virtual81 is saying is technically correct. If you want longevity you should be waiting for the X670 board with Zen 3 cpu.

            • @Chicken feed: Well not sure what 670 will bring to the table but for the most part this board ticks quite a few boxes.

Have you had a chance to see the specs?

      • +4

I said mid tier chipset board, not mid tier board.
As others have already posted B550 is the middle tier of the current gen of AMD boards.
Anyone serious about both good features and performance will be better served waiting for X670 or using X570 with it's PCIe Gen 4 link to the chipset.
At the $400 price point plenty of mid to high end X570 boards are available.

        • True, you did say chipset.. my bad.

Have you seen the specs for this board? It actually has features/specs outside the scope of 550 chipset.

          • @vash5: I've taken a cursory glance, but not seen anything special.

            What am i missing?
            Genuinely curious.

            ::edit::
By glance, pretty much compared it with a board i bought recently.

            https://www.asus.com/Product-Compare/?products=fkufhp8oogo9e…
TUF GAMING X570-PLUS (WI-FI) is what i got.
Not seeing any practical differences outside the marketing crap.
Only thing of minor interest to me is the Intel I225-V over the Realtek for LAN, but either way they both do 2.5Gbps.

            • @virtual81: Sorry about the late reply.

That's the thing. You should notice this board has pretty much all the features of yours and more in some circumstances.

Features that were not initially reserved for B550 this board has.. PCIe 4.0 x16 (x16 or dual x8) support, M.2 PCIe 4.0 support (x1), 2.5Gb Ethernet, Wi-Fi 6 (not that it really matters here in oz 🙈) and support for upcoming new processors.

One of the other advantages is no fan cooling system is requested on the mobo too.

Based on all that, I don't see what X570 offers over B550 in this instance.

              • @vash5: I'd counter that to say my X570 board was $100 cheaper and has everything this has.
                Only minor difference is WiFi6.
Chipset fan is a non issue, don't know why people are trying to make it one.

The B550 is supposed to offer value, but at prices higher than X570 boards there is none.
For the average punter I'd recommend a a B550, but never with a $100 price hike over a (slightly) superior X570 board.
The feature gap between B550 and X570 might be small, but there is a gap and no one in their right mind would pay more for a lesser board.

                • @virtual81: Cheers for the reply.

How much did you end up paying for your Mobo if you don't mind me asking? Was it on special?? (perhaps a stupid question given you are on here :P)

Yeah the fan was a factor I didn't like about X570 tbh.

I see the point you are making and its a fair call. I guess it comes down to features in the end and what you are looking for.

                  • @vash5: Chipsets have had fans on and off over the last 20 years.
No different than a CPU needing a fan.
As long as it's reasonable quality and I can't hear it then it's not a problem.

The board i got was posted here…
                    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/552790
                    Criteria was…
Average or above average VRM's (no junk, but not running LN2 either)
                    2.5Gb - 10Gb Ethernet (i move a bit of data to/from my NAS which has a 2Gb link)
                    ALC1220

Would have been happy with a B550 board, but not at a price premium.

Probably not important right now, but at least with X570 the CPU -> chipset link is PCIe4.0, and thus any additional NVMe storage i hang off the chipset will benefit from it.
That said it's not like i have more than a pair of NVMe drives so far.
