  • Is there any difference between US and AU layout?

    • +14

Don't think there's such a thing as AU layout

    • +19

      US: AZD
      AU: ASD

      /s

    • +8

AU uses the same layout as US, called ANSI. The other common English layout you might see is the UK/European one (called ISO)

      • +6

Yeh the one with the FAT enter key

      • AUS layout has the "Return" / "Enter" key as a long horizontal key rather than a long vertical key ????

        Can anybody confirm?

        • yes

  • This keyboard's switches are not hot swap right?

    • no

    • -7

No, and that's kinda the problem with these overpriced boards. You can easily build one your self that is higher quality and is cheaper. And you can have the options of using ANY switch.

      • +20

I am looking at building one. Definately not going to be cheaper. If you have links please pass these on :)

        • -1

Look at some of TaeKeyboards builds or TaeHa types ones. They have some pretty interesting boards that they've made before on YouTube

          • @YeemaiI: TaeHa is $1800 plus shipping (assume USD) for a custom designed keyboard. They look great though.

Keychron K8 looks pretty good TKL, alu housing, gateron switches but compatible with cherry - hotswappable for $99 USD plus Shipping.

            • @bad hombre: Yeah or the K6 seems good.

            • @bad hombre: Keychron isn't really alu. It's a plastic shell with aluminium panels that slide onto said plastic shell.

              • @apey2000: Oh yeah. Been watching reviews all day. Maybe can purchase a compatible case as an upgrade?

Most of my use will be office type work. I use different keyboards but find mechanical the nicest.

      • Do you have a guide for that? How much cheaper is cheaper though? I thought razer products were high quality or something…

        • -2

Guide for building mech keyboards? Mate, there are a whole plethora of choices available. Would recommend checking out the GK61 or GK64. Great starter hotswap boards that you can customize to your hearts content.

The GK61 goes for less than $75 easy.

      • Noooo not cheaper but more satisfying

        • -2

It can be cheaper. But yes, more satisfying.

        • Heh. Be careful what you wish for. It’s kinda like golfing or photography: once you really get into it there’s always something else on the horizon and you end up with more stuff than you originally intended. Hella fun, though, and once you find that One Perfect Layout it’s oh-so-satisfying.

      • LOL why am I being downvoted

        • I'm completely for DIY mech keyboards - and I reckon it's a tad more cost-effective. While it's initially expensive to buy whatever you need (whether it be switches, keycaps or hotswap PCB), you can get a lot more life out of a single board - only needing to swap out certain parts, instead of whole keyboards.

Keyboards like this Razer BlackWidow, use custom keyswitches that are soldered into the board - meaning that if you don't like the switch itself (e.g. too fast) then there's nothing really to do except return or buy another whole keyboard. Also, I know that Logitech G keyboards have wacky keycap sizes - meaning that you can't use a full set of third-party keycaps, even if they fit the stem (e.g. spacebar on the G Pro X is 5.75u, normally it'd be 6.25u).

        • bc people dont understand the mechanical keyboard enthusiast world. If it doesnt have razer, corsair or logitech on it, its bad.

    • +17

Yes hence why it’s called a tenkeyless.

      • +3

yeah but tbh its also dumb bc this is advertised for office use and "professional environment"

        • +2

Erm…you’d be surprised at the huge number of ‘professional’ coders who love to use these small-format keyboards. Check out the 60% form factor, it’s missing way more keys than this, yet tons of power users love it.

TKL and smaller ‘boards are niche, but it’s one of those things that if you have to ask then you just don’t get it.

          • @Chazzozz: This ^^

          • @Chazzozz: i'm downgrading from a full size keyboard and now want a 60% due to lack of use of those keys.

Of course everybody has their preference and full size just fits most people's requirements

            • @howard22: ive got 2 60% keyboards and they both still take up less space than my old full sized keyboard did, except now i have the option to choose what type of switch i want to use on a certain day. Definitely spices up my productivity

  • I wonder how the current Razer gear holds up against the OG stuff they had back in the day.

I'm still typing on my 2011 $150 Razer Blackwidow Ultimate with the Cherry MX Blue switches and it's still going strong with no issues to this day.

    • I got one of the first gen orange switches in 2015-ish? There was a stuck tab key after 2 years and I’ve used it sparingly since. Was thinking about this one to use but thought better to first try blow out the sticky key. Alas it worked… Hope it stays that way tho.

I just bought the white one at full price, arrived a few days back, love it. The white one is pretty slick looking, photo's dont do it justice.Put the extra noise suppression rings on all the keys that came with the keyboard, its reasonably quiet. Love the underglow / white light. I got it for my work laptop, but its too nice a keyboard, thiking of giving it to my better half if she prefers it, might get another :) maybe the black one now its on sale :D

  • +3

This honestly isn't the worst keyboard, however i think you can do much better for this price. Tecware Phantom L (Low Profile) is about $79 + Delivery plus it offers the flexibility of being able to swap the switches in the future. I'd argue that the only downside is that the cable is not detachable unlike this one.

edit: my bad it does have a detachable cable

  • Still using Logitech with romer g mechanical switches for $54 from back in the day: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/396784?_gl=1*1nccue6*_ga*O…

Actually prefer the feel of romer g compared to any other switch for gaming. Wonder how these razer orange feel.

    • Yeah the hate for Romer-Gs is real. I love the Romer-G Tactiles on my G512, MX Blues feel too fake, like the click isn't natural, MX Reds feel like there isn't even a switch, though I haven't tried MX Browns. They may be very similar to the Romer-Gs I'm using.g

      • MX Browns (and other variants) have their own signature feel. I used Romer-Gs for a solid 5 years on my G810 - it feels a tad smoother than Browns, but when bottoming out, there's a strong mushy sensation. Then again, my Romer-G's are pretty beat and I'm sure they feel different now - compared to when they were new.

However, a big downside of the Romer-G's are that you can't use any other variant of keycaps (i.e. third-party). First of all, the stems are unique - and secondly, some key lengths aren't standard (e.g. Caps lock, shift and spacebar). Keycaps wore down relatively quickly - but I only gave up on the board when keys started repeating.

  • What does orange key means in reference to cherry's?

    • The closest counterpart would be their Brown switches - just these Razer ones have a lower actuation point.

  • 85% board is the best

  • Tenkeyless

10 key less: Is that referring to numeric pad.

  • +3

Chroma is also on special down to $139.10 from $219.95 from Amazon AU.

    • Damn that's a nice keyboard

  • -4

I got a tecware from mwave, its great about a qtr of the price

    • +4

      79 isn’t “qtr” of 92, not even “3qtr”.

      • i read the op wrong thought it said 200+

  • +2

Any mechanical keyboard recommendations primarily for work? ie. one with a num pad?

    • +1

If you're looking for longevity - Das Keyboards are probably the best. You'd best be trying to find one with Cherry Brown switches (assuming that you're working in a office-type environment).

      • +2

echo this, I have the original Das (2007) with no key and the Silent from 2009 and they're both still working as if they're brand new - it's a Cherry Brown, I've tried the Blue's but wasn't a fan. Key types are a very personal thing, so best to try it once lockdown is over and pick the click that clicks with you.

I'm not a fan of extra keys, media functions etc (though the USB ports are handy), so the early Das's are my favourite.

        • +1

One of the newer models looks way too over the top - something about it using RGB lighting effects to tell you of notifications (e.g. new emails, weather alerts).

          • @jjsu: Yikes, what the! it's like the old Optimus keyboard!

Also how did these become so expensive? I paid $199 for the original (granted, it was a limited run and preorder!) and $149 for the silent (Professional S) at PCCG in 2009, now they're $299+?

lots of places out of stock though.

I was going to get a leopold.

    • Best pre built mech in terms of build quality is definitely the Leopold FC900R

  • Nice find OP.

I am using BlackWidow Elite with Green Key, which is an excellent keyboard but a bit noisy for work especially when having to Zoom and type at the same time.

Got this one, so hopefully it will be better suited for work purposes.

    • It'll definitely be more suited - however, microphone placement may also have an impact of how much of the keyboard clatter that you hear (even for tactile ones)

  • Are these loud to use in uni library?
