Out of curiosity, are many people buying these over the shuckable 12TB WDs or 16TB Seagates?

    • People who value the supposed reliability/warranty and NAS specific features such as the vibration sensors and special health monitoring features. I thought I would get these too for my NAS but I kept getting tempted by those damn good shuckable deals.

      • the 16tb Seagates use the Exos drives, which are also Nas grade drives.

        • Enterprise grade drives are a whole different beast but yes. I don't think they offer the same Ironwolf Health feature though in Synology NAS though.

On a related note, I have a 10TB Exos drive in my desktop PC now thanks to some good fortune with the recent shucking deal… and after seeing the price on the 16TB at $431, I decided to bite and fill my fourth drive bay. Only one slot remains!

    • Personally unless its the pro unit which has the 5 year warranty would i shell out and get the drive vs a shuck drive,

I also read an article comparing it from a warranty stance if you buy a spare or two it still works out cheaper with shucks vs the longer warranty of the drives based on the low failure rate of drives (following the bathtub timeline)

    • Because these are more quiet than the 12tb + drives so more suitable than exos for your desktop

  • Or …..
If needing a bit less storage - the 6TB version for $236.08 :)

Last Seagate IronWolf I got from Amazon was DOA. Shipped just in a Seagate cardboard box. 100% cardboard with sections folded to create a cradle for the drive. Really can't see any drives arriving working. Allows too much movement whilst also doing a crap job at absorbing any impacts.
