Need to replace my glossy 32" FHD Samsung curved monitor due to glare and came across this. Not sure if I should go for this or the Xiaomi. Price is similar and specs similar apart from ports and curved vs non curved. Thoughts?

i have the 34" curved Kogan screen. Can't imagine looking at a screen that wide without it being curved.

Certainly makes a big difference. Left the 34" back in the office while WFH due to COVID at the moment. Have a small laptop setup with a 24inch. Even at at 24", the screen looks weird now as it's not curved.

Most people (who don't have one) think it's a gimmick until they try it - I was definitely one of them.

75hz vs 144hz, both have the same panel but the Xiaomi is slightly cheaper when on sale. (I think eBay plus has it for $554ish)

I'd love it if it was curved

It can be overclocked to 95hz, but the native setting is 75hz.

I don't see why you would want this over the Xiaomi.

No height adjust, no tilt, no adjustment etc, so it's very much lacking in the ergonomics department. You can watch a review here but it's a pretty short one that doesn't touch on gaming or colour accuracy, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2FBl5XPm_Kc

Can someone please help advise on what optimal specifications should look?

    Specifications

    Screen Curvature
N/A (good or bad / what should I be looking for?)

    Brightness (Min)

3000:1(Typ),2000:1(Min) (good or bad / what should I be looking for?)

    HDR(High Dynamic Range)

    Response Time
4(GTG) (good or bad / what should I be looking for (gaming + virtual machines + rendering)?)

    Resolution
3,440 x 1,440 (good or bad for this size / what should I be looking for?)

    • Perhaps you should post it in the forum.

      1) Screen Curvature: Yes, it'd be much needed in an ultrawide monitor like this one - even if it's as little as 1800R, it'll improve user-experience by a ton

      2) Brightness - 300 nits is fairly average for computer monitors

      3) Contrast Ratio Static - in short, white images will be 3000 times brighter than blacks (producing deeper blacks). I'm not sure as to how much affect this will have.

      4) HDR - Not too important to have - most TVs will have this nowadays, but it's mainly used to provide a wider range of colour detail

      5) Response Time - 4ms response time is pretty solid for all the activities you'll be doing

      6) Resolution - in short, it'll have the same pixel density as a 27" WQHD monitor; but you gain some extra screen real estate

I don't have the technical expertise to comment on the other stuff, but here's my take on the curved/flat:

The wider your monitor, and the closer you sit to it, the more curved monitors make sense. It matches the natural movement of your neck as you "pan" from side to side. Having the edges of your screen a similar distance from your eyes to the middle might feel strange for a few minutes, but once you sit right in front of the screen and just use it, you will forget all about it; it just feels natural IMO. It's worth noting that some screens are curved more than others and you probably should sample one before making a purchase decision.

Curved screens are often intended to compensate for an inherent shortcoming in panel technology. Some screens have relatively narrow viewing angles, where colours are distorted if viewed from off-centre. This is common on many screens, but it's particularly noticeable on VA display panels. Curving the panel so the entire screen is more perpendicular to your eyes prevents this effect from being visible, where a flat panel would appear to have strange colour changes from edge to middle.

The above is less applicable to large-format TVs for a few reasons:
    1. A TV is intended to be viewed from much further away, and the content is typically scaled differently.
    2. From further back, you don't need to turn your head from side to side to view all of the content, so the difference in distance is far less apparent.
    3. TVs are commonly viewed by multiple people from several angles at once. A curve would distort the picture for people sitting furtherest off-centre.
The above issues make curved TVs far less compelling.

    • That's helpful to know!!

Beware that if Freesync/Gsync is a major factor for you, it doesn't work so good on the Xiaomi. It mostly works ok above 75FPS, but below that is flicker city. It even flickers now and then when your FPS fluctuates above that.

    I'm using a GTX 1080 with mine.

    • when do you notice the flickering most e.g in menus or where is it most likely to get below 75 FPS

this is disappointing to hear about xiaomi monitor and gsync.. since it has really good specs for the price..

is it possible to record the flicker on some games and post it online for us to see?

Is there flicker in windows daily desktop usage?

    • For what it's worth, I have not experienced any flicker on mine. Running on GTX 1070 Max-Q and Quadro P2000 (personal and work laptops) via HDMI. I get framerates that vary between 50-110 fps depending on the application.

Having said that, I'm not certain that I'm actually using G Sync due to the HDMI limitation of my laptops.

I just got a xiaomi and honestly the build quality is amazing. I've bought loads of cheap monitors before and they cheap out on all sorts of things, especially the stand but the xiaomi stand is really good, I kinda wish I didn't already have a monitor arm so that I could test out the stand even more!

Also to OP's question, the xiaomi is sometimes cheaper, has double the refresh rate, the before mentioned better stand, and a 1500r curve. Xiaomi are known for good products at cheap prices while Samsung find the high end market more profitable so will do everything they can to ruin their cheap products.

How's the backlight bleed? Seen + heard a lot of people complaining about that

      • +1

Mine doesn't have any bleed as far as I can tell

        • can you take some pics with a black background video or black background image?

  • These are back in stock. Does this coupon still work?
