Belong $40 Starter Pack for $20 @ Coles

1070

Starter Pack Features

  • 40GB Data (+40GB on the 1st billing date)
  • Unlimited national calls & sms.
  • Unlimited data banking.
  • Unlimited data gifting.
  • No lock-in contracts.
  • Flexibility to change plans once every monthly payment cycle.
  • Data slows to 64 kbps if you use all your monthly allowance.
  • Telstra 4G & 3G.
  • 12 month starter pack expiry (you have 12 months from the purchase date to activate)

Here are 2 good options for getting the most out of this starter pack. Before you activate make sure you get a referral code from a friend already with Belong or the OzBargain Belong pool for an additional $20 credit.

Option 1 (4 Months 23GB) - Activate on the $25 10GB per month plan. When the 1st billing date comes you'll get another 10GB. Then switch to the $10 1GB per month plan for the 2nd & remaining months. The first 4 months cost is covered ($40 starter pack credit plus $20 referral credit) $5.00 will be left over for the 5th month.

Option 2 (3 Months 82GB) - Activate on the $40 40GB per month plan. When the 1st billing date comes you'll get another 40GB. Then switch to the $10 1GB per month plan for the 2nd & remaining months. The first 3 months cost is covered ($40 starter pack credit plus $20 referral credit) and data rolls over every month or can be gifted.

Billing Dates (4th, 12th, 20th & 28th)
Plans are billed on the same date monthly. The time between activation and the next billing date is free.
One month worth of data is credited on activation, and another on your first payment date, 1-8 days later. So you effectively get double data for the first monthly payment at no extra cost. You can then change to a lower rate plan ($10/month) and use the banked data allowance.

  • I activated a $25 SIM Pack on the 29th August, and the app is telling me "You'll receive your next 10GB mobile data allowance on 28 September."

I'm a little confused about what's going on, and precisely when I should switch to the $10/month plan.

    Have things changed?

    • +1

Your 1st payment date should have been on the 4th Sept if you activated on the 29th Aug, but if you don't have to pay anything until the 28th then that's a win for you.

You can only change plans after your 1st payment date, but who knows with your account. Log in and see if you can change it now.

      Did you get double data?

      • Thanks Arthur, that's what I thought.

The Next Payment (due 28 September) is showing as $0, with $25 in applied credit (referral credit added after this date I think). No double-data yet.

So I'll wait until that date passes, and then switch down to the $10/month plan. Although I'm tempted to try it now (want longevity of service more than the extra 10GB)

Must have been a wrinkle, as I used a previous Belong email-account, which was on the 28th-of-the-month cycle.

        • Definitely try it now. It will be faded out if you can't.

        • +4

If you reuse an existing Belong account to activate a SIM, the billing date stays the same as before, regardless of when you activate the current SIM.

So if you activate on the day after the previous billing date like you did, you essentially get a free month, instead of the usual 1-7 days.

Note that you'll receive the referral credit and be able to change your plan on 28 Sep.

          • @coldlamb: Cool, that's an interesting little quirk which I haven't seen mentioned before, I think.

            • +2

@Charlie Dont Surf: I haven't seen anyone mentioning it either.

Also note that no matter which referrer you use in your subsequent activations, the referrer used in your first activation will always receive the referral credit again (if their account is active, otherwise their credit is lost). This will be an issue for those intending to give the subsequent referral credits to someone else, although you will still receive the credit as a referee.

Great writeup, thanks OP. $20 for 4 months is pretty sweet, close to Kogan sale prices.

    • No probs - and don't forget the 5th month will only cost an additional $5 with Option 1.

    • +1

and if you don't use all your data (I'm wfh in Melbourne ISO) after the 4 months then for $10 per month you get Telstra network and the data just rolls over… even better refer a few friends and family, collect the $20 credit and don't pay a cent…

  • +2

you can find the $80 Sim kit for around the same price on gumtree or Facebook

    • I did a quick search and people are asking for $30-$60. So It will require some negotiating to get it down to $20.

  • Can I not recharge at all and just keep using the starter pack until "12 month SIM expiry" ?

As I rarely use data, and the unlimited calls & sms is great if I can use that for 12 months.

    • The 12 month sim expiry has nothing to do with this. It means you have 12 months from the purchase date to activate the starter pack.

The minimum monthly plan after the 1st payment date is $10 which is deducted automatically.
You need to physically change to this plan as described in the op.

      • I see! was totally wrong about the expiry thing :) thanks a lot!

  • currently with Telstra postpaid m2m, can I just port directly to Belong or do I have to go through the painful process like porting from Telstra postpaid to Boost?

    • I ported to belong from Telstra no issues apart from stupidly porting on a Sunday so had no service until Monday am.

    • Nah it's no problem, because it's Telstra Wholesale, whereas Boost is Telstra full network.

Here comes a Belong deal and there comes Arthur Dung … the Belong Genius.

  • DO NOT port/activate on these dates 4th, 12th, 20th, 28th.

Has anyone confirmed this? Actually missed out on the initial double data?

    • Yups … these are confirm dates of Billing Cycle.

      • +1

We know. Thats not what I asked.

Aha! Checked my emails, and can confirm this is WRONG.

I activated a service on the morning of 28th Dec, and my first billing date was the 4th Jan.

So activating on a billing date is the BEST way. You get a whole week fee, as well as double data.

        • I'm confused, your 1st comment says that you missed out on double data?
Did you activate on a billing date that time?

          • @Arthur Dunger: No, I asked if anyone had.
Where did you get the idea that people could miss out by activating on the wrong date? Cut & paste from earlier deal perhaps?
It is not in the whirlpool wiki:

"One month worth of data is credited on activation, and another on your first payment date, 1-8 days later. So you effectively get double data for the first monthly payment. "

            • @bargaino: Yes it basically built up over time from past deals & comments on Ozbargain.

Also Belong are contributing to this confusion by not advertising their starter packs as 80GB. Why would they say the $40 starter pack comes with 40GB if it actually comes with 80GB every time?

I was never exactly sure myself and thought there was no harm in mentioning it to play it safe. If more members want to risk it & activate on billing dates & can confirm it's wrong then I will remove it from the description.

              • +1

                @Arthur Dunger:

Why would they say the $40 starter pack comes with 40GB if it actually comes with 80GB every time?

This is the interesting question. I see two plausible answers:

                1) viral marketing

                2) a lazy implementation of the poorly stated requirements for their billing system. Yes, I have worked in IT.

        • Are you saying it’s good to activate/port today even though peeps said not to port today?

        • +3

Yes some people activating on a billing day got their first billing on the same day and missed on the double data. That's why it is recommended to not activate on a billing day.
You got lucky as it did not do this for you, it may be because 28th Dec was not a working day.

          • +2

            @lorikeet: possibly, but [citation needed]

Arthur, thanks for the post. I'm not trying to detract from a good deal.
I just have a bit of a thing for challenging urban legends. It is polite to fact-check before repeating. But that's not how the world works, I know.

            • +3

@bargaino: I looked into this and seems that I was mistaken.
I didn't find any report of people missing the double data by activating on a billing day.
But on the Whirlpool thread I found several reports of people activating on a billing day and getting their billing date on the next billing day and getting the double data: here

The earliest mention I could find of the "Do not activate on a billing day" warning is from this comment. It then got copied in the post description and other posts after that.

              • @lorikeet: Thanks for looking into it, that must have taken a while. I have removed it from the description and just left the billing dates so members are aware of how to get the maximum free days.

        • We ? Oh … are you in parallel space ?

  • Would this work on a Telstra pocket wifi 4gx?

    • +1

Should do as long as the pocket wifi isn't locked. If it's locked it can only work on Boost or Telstra.

  • hi, look like they have cancelled the $10/month for new customers
    https://www.belong.com.au/mobile/plans/small-sim-plan
Please correct me if iam missed something

    • +1

The $10 plan is only available after the first payment date.

      • So you have to do the first month at $25?

        • You can choose $25 or $40 for the 1st month, hence Option 1 & 2.

      • One more question Arthur, what happens with the 5th month with $5 credit leftover. Can we still use our data in our databank? do we need to recharge in order to keep up with the plan? please guide me as i am fresh to this deal

        • In Critical Information Summary:

You’re signing up for a SIM only month-to-month post-paid mobile service

So you'll be charged $5 at the beginning of your 5th month.

  • Can I port from Boost to Belong? Or best to get an intermediary sim?

    • I have done both ways and just used a sim from Coles both time

  • Been noticing lately that whenever I initiate or accept a call my services drops back to 3G then after the call reconnects to 4G. Anyone else experiencing/experienced a similar issue? The 3G calls are terrible too.

    • No VoLTE

  • Anyone have similar problem like me , switch to Belong from Telstra Post-Paid this afternoon around 4pm . Telstra already cancel my number 30 mins after activation . Belong Sim however still show as SOS only . Reading from above if you activate on Sunday you won't have services until Monday ??

  • Just bought and active this one today
By the way, Anyone know who sell Belong data with cheap price ?

  • When does this offer end? I visited a Coles today and they didn't have this offer.

    • +1

It's available until the 15th as per the Op.

How do you know it wasn't available, did you actually scan one at the checkout?

      • Hmm, there wasn't a yellow discount label on the shelf, and I didn't try to scan it at checkout. I'll try when I next visit Coles.

And thanks for pointing out the expiry date in OP, I thought I had looked properly before, and it still took me ages to find it after your comment, it's not in a very obvious location!

        • +1

Sometimes they don't mark it as on special but when you scan it the discount is applied. I always grab a catalogue as backup in case the staff try and tell me it's not on special.

          • @Arthur Dunger: Went into Coles again, it's still not marked on the shelf as discounted this week. It did scan properly at $20 during checkout though!

Another question since you seem to be the Belong expert here: is there anything stopping me from buying say 5 of these, activating and using one for 3 months with option 2, then throwing it away and activating the next one etc. over 12 months? Does their ID check at sign up prevent this?

FYI I'm only interested in the data to use as a hotspot for my family while we travel

            • @NimbusTLD: If you use the same name, they'll know it's you. I tried to transfer data from one account to the other, didn't work. Solution is to transfer to a friend, who transfers it back.

              • @JohnHowardsEyebrows: I don't need to port my number, I will use these SIMs purely for the data.

Will they completely stop me from registering them?

                • @NimbusTLD: I'm saying that once registered, they may not allow you to transfer data to your main account. Hence you'll need to transfer to somebody else first, who can transfer it to your original account.

  • Edit: Thanks Arthur for referral number and phone number

  • Does the referral credit work if you already have an NBN account with Belong?

  • Thanks Arthur for the post and referral! :)

  • +1

I just signed up but I can't find anywhere I can enter referral code..Do you know how?

  • questions please.

    1. If I were to buy and activate the SIM today, the next billing date is on the 28th. I would like to take option 2 but unsure when to switch to the $10 1GB/month plan.

option 2 text added for convenience

Option 2 (3 Months 82GB) - Activate on the $40 40GB per month plan. When the 1st billing date comes you'll get another 40GB. Then switch to the $10 1GB per month plan for the 2nd & remaining months. The first 3 months cost is covered ($40 starter pack credit plus $20 referral credit) and data rolls over every month or can be gifted.

    1. Can I do this process every 3 months? or Do I need to move to a non-Telstra provider first?

    Thanks

    • +1

Yes, but it is post paid so you'll have to cancel your account each time. Easiest thing to do is stick to $10/month and if you ever start running low on data do this with a throwaway account, transfer the data to yourself and cancel the throwaway account

      • Thanks for that. When do I switch to the $10 plan if I activate a sim today? Thanks again

        • +1

I think you can after your first billing date (which uses the value on the sim)

  • +1

    Anyone signed up recently?
Not seeing the option to add referral, and next billing date is 1 month from sign up.. not the 4/12/20/28 cycle.

    • Did you find a place to enter a referrer code? I have a sim ready to activate. But the referrer link only lets me order a new sim.
