    Thanks OP

Can it be used to put the free to air footy on a screen in the kitchen? My partner has always wanted that

I have a network tv tuner if it helps (never liked it, the aspect ratio always seemed off, so it's just sitting in a cupboard, but I could get it out)

    • No because the channel 7 app doesn't work on this. There might be a way to get streaming via a different app though.

      • +1

Cant sideload it? If that's not possible can be done via kodi and a aussie TV add on

        • +10

They block the AFL on channel 7 App so even if it did work, no AFL. Due to licensing.

You can get it with Kodi but you need to have access to:

An AFL Live Pass (free with many Telstra services, average quality, 25FPS)

Foxtel Go (Only 720p but 50FPS so it's good, if you have family/friends with a foxtel cable/sat sport service they get around 5 logins, so borrow or buy one)

Foxtel Now (Similar to Foxtel Go but online, I think they can get 1080P)

Or Kayo which also has top quality.

All available on Kodi through Matt Huisman's site except for Telstra AFL Live Pass which is a Kodi Aussie Addon.

          • +2

@Falbium: Also Kayosports 1080p 50fps. Can 3 months free from BetEasy

          • -1

@Falbium: This. Saved my life during lockdown 2.0 when I can't go to my parent's to watch the footy before curfew. I use their Foxtel login instead :D

      • 7plus works in this

    • +4

You can cast your phone to it if that helps.

    • +2

      Just use LiveTV app.

    • there are ways to do this if the channel 7 app is not available but it would require additional devices/hardware. I do exactly this with a Raspberry Pi, i have it connected to my TV antenna and it broadcasts free to air TV over my local network. I can access it from any device on my network. I looked into it and the app i use to view it appears to be on the firestick app store.

  • Can you watch Appletv+ and also Foxtel directly through it? Or do you need to ‘chromecast’ style onto it? Can you even cast to it, or only remote?

    • +7

There is a native Apple TV+ app, and you can install Kodi then use Matt Huismans add-ons for Foxtel Go and Now / Kayo / Binge / Freeview etc:

      https://www.matthuisman.nz/

      • Thanks. Anymore add-ons you know?

      • yes i set mine up this way with Matt Huismans add-on for Kayo also, it works good.

      • Are these free?

        • +1

You still need a subscription according to the website.

          • +1

@ausbob71: Kodi and the add-ons are free. Obviously the services it's using are not.

    Great price ;)

Does not appear to support 4K content?

    • +7

      @Blasters
"Does not appear to support 4K content?"

This is correct. Amazon AU sells only the basic model in Australia. This is the same basic model that Amazon sells into international markets. Australia, South East Asia India etc all receive this same basic model.

Since the 4K model available from Amazon US & CA has been out about 3 years now, I wouldn't hold my breath seeing it released here by Amazon AU otherwise it would have been released here by now. It will work here if your want to import it but you will need an AU ac power adapter that is compatible.

      • +2

Read somewhere that prime video australian subscription won't work on the imported model….

        • +2

This was the case before and you had to side load the Prime video apk to get it to work. Now the native Prime video app works which i noticed from 6 months ago.

Have been using the 4k version for around 2 years now and bought it because it was much faster.

          • @bryans: PSA Not on all of the fire tv devices… maybe on the fire stick 4k but I have an older 2nd get fire tv box (1st fire tv 4k device) and I can only watch amazon via the apk from aptoid / from the mega folder listed previously.

Bought it originally for grand tour in 4k, worked fine until I shifted from a us to au account, reset it today to test what you said but sadly doesn't do it.

            • @Elusivity: I am using my normal amazon au account on my 4k stick
              Fire OS: 6.2.7.3
              Fire TV Home Version: 6240499.1

      • +1

How weird! Why don't they sell 4k model in Australia if it's been out for 3 yrs now?

        • +1

probably had a look at our median internet speeds and said yeah nah

  • +5

Take note it's 1080p only for people with 4k TV's

    • +1

I got it for my parents 1080P plasma TV :D

  • Can i cast from phone instead of using their apps?

    • +7

only for some app, like YouTube. It doesn't have anywhere near the amount of support as Chromecast

      • I will skip it then. Thanks.

  • +18

They really, really, really need to discontinue this device and give us the 4K offerings they sell pretty much in every other market.

Why this is still a thing is beyond me.

  • -4

    A product from 2016.
    WOW.

  • +1

Anyone know if it has ABC iView and SBS On Demand as apps?

    • +1

no, none of the Australian FTA TV channels are available unless you sideload. I was able to get ch 10 and ABC iView by sideloading, but cannot get 7, 9 or SBS.

    • +2

I sideloaded those channels but iview has not worked for a week now. Says something like it needs google play services which are not supported or something like that.
      Suggestions anyone?

I got all the channels on via this page

  • +6

Too laggy. But may be useful to some.

  • Thanks OP! Ordered one.

  • Plus additional 7% cashback via Cashrewards too I think.

  • No Kayo?

  • Does it work on monitors ?

    • +1

The monitor will need to support HDCP over HDMI.

  • +7

Good one.. bought second one now.. dont forget cashrewards of 7%

    • Ah. Forgot about that. Need to cancel and reorder now.

      • haha had to cancel and order again also

    • Cheers for reminder :)

  • Does anyone know if this generation compatible to pass through tv sound output to echo dot?

    • Unsure if its me or my setup but always insists its offline when I try link for this.

      • +1

I think only fire tv 4K support using echo dot as TV speaker.

    • +1

No compatible to send audio to echos

      • I will skip it then, would have be good if you could use this stick to get echo dot work as TV speaker.

  • Great price. Bought one

  • Good for the bedroom tv, thanks OP!

  • Damn it, bought one full price 2 weeks ago!

    • +1

Same here. Can we buy this one and return the old one? I mean return the new unit for the older order?

      • +1

Call amazon and they will refund the difference

        • I thought they only do price adjustment within 1 week of the order delivery?

          • +3

            @Rimas: just call them

            • @jayboi: I called them and they agreed to return the difference as account credit, which I accepted as I buy lots of things from them. If you need a cash refund though, you better return the old one.

            • @jayboi: Just called them up, but unfortunately they don’t offer refunding difference as product is now out of stock. Sounds like it works, but I gotta be quicker with it in future instead of complaining on OzB haha - thanks champ!

      • -1

        return the old one

        • Returning the old one is a waste of time, if you call them they would just refund the difference straight away, amazon customer service is excellent. and you don't have to worry about setting up a new one again too

  • +1

is this product better than a chromecast? i am assuming that lose the remote for the fire stick would make that device unless?

    • You can cast to this without a remote and the phone app/remote is actually great for this too.

    • You can buy the remote separately if needed.

    • +1

Depends if you are a google person. I prefer amazon devices because for me they work better.
I own both echo and google mini. My google minis are now paper weight.

    • You can control it through the tv remote via HDMI.

    • same question.

I've done some research and decided to ditch my chromecast for the following reasons:

      1. Chromecast has no remote, it's just a casting tool, not an integrated smart tv platform.
      2. Chromecast got glitches all of the time, and the app is a pain in the a*s.
      3. The secondhand market is still pretty good for chromecast, you can easily sell it for 30 dollars.
      4. I get to use Prime videos as a prime user.

anyways, time to say goodbye to uncle google.

  • +1

Is there a working Plex app for this

    • I have Plex on mine.

    • Yup, and it works well. Though personally I prefer the Roku plex app.

  • +2

Use Apponly10 to get $10 discount. Final price: $29

    • +1

      Didn't work

      • Works for me (obviously using the Amazon App, not via browser)

        • didn't work for me even using app

        • Maybe it's for first time user on Amazon app

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: Yes it is. As is explained over and over again in Amazon deals.
