Post of the day. Clearly see the picture.

  • is this 7200RPM?

    • It says Ecodrive on the box so I take it as 5400rpm

      • +1

ah good, eco-drive, nice to see people are doing they're part

  • well OW have the WD Elements 2TB for $98 and it's 7200RPM, on their site it still says $109 but at north ryde OW it's $98

The speed difference between 5400 and 7200RPM is not very big.
And even at 5400rpm the usb transfer speed will still be slower than what the drive can do.

And to those who did not bother to look for themselves

        Samsung 5400RPM
        Performance Specifications
        Average Seek time(typical) 8.9 ms
        Data Transfer Rate / Media to/from Buffer(Max.) 250MB/sec
        Data Transfer Rate / Buffer to/from Host(Max.) 300MB/sec
        Average Latency 5.52 ms
        Drive Ready Time(typical) 13 sec

        Samsung 7200RPM
        Performance Specifications
        Average Seek time(typical) 8.9 ms
        Data Transfer Rate / Media to/from Buffer(Max.) 250 MB/sec
        Data Transfer Rate / Buffer to/from Host(Max.) 300 MB/sec
        Average Latency 4.14 ms
        Drive Ready Time(typical) 8 sec

So you need to wait an extra 5 seconds for the drive to be ready when you turn it on and an extra 1.38 milliseconds for it to find your file!

And the fastest USB3 (Not USB2, that can only reach about 40MB/sec) HDD file rate is about 130MB/second. Still much slower than what a 5400RPM drive can deliver

  • hmmm brb going to OW north ryde…

  • FWIW, I went into Harvey Norman at Alexandria around the 24th of October, and they were selling these for $99 then. If Good Guys are sold out, perhaps go to HN and see if they've got any left.

A little off topic, but has the price of HDDs gone back up because due to the flooding of the factory in Thailand? 2tbs were around $80 just a few weeks ago weren't they?

    • Pretty much. Even the manufacturers whose factories were not affected will still raise their prices, because they can.

If we sing their jingle will they reduce it to $90? And if we do the whole dance production, $85?

  • .

  • I had one of these die recently after less than 12 months use. It was only used as a backup drive and rarely switched on, so buyer beware. I'm off Samsung drives for good now.

And i recently had a WD drive die after about 2 weeks.

All manufactures make faulty drives, you were just unlucky to get a faulty Samsung
