Mod 13/9 (copy paste of the report reply): For those reporting that RRP should be in the forum or similar, there is no such guideline. As always the community will decide if it's a good deal or not via the voting system and/or comments. In general, a deal can be good value or of interest without being discounted as such, whilst a deal can be discounted but still be of little interest or poor value. In any case it's up to members to decide. In relation to potential issues about the deal details, should the deal not go ahead as posted, or another issue that breaches guidelines, it will be removed at that time. Please use TWAM for other issues and keep comments respectful. Thanks

Mod 2 15/9: Mwave has now announced there will be a raffle to purchase (that's a new one). The main deal link has been updated and the deal post moved to forums. Please join the raffle should you be interested in purchasing and continue discussion in the comments below.

2020 sucks I miss the good old days when you didn't have to enter a raffle just to have a chance on getting new graphics card at release

    • "tell me the difference between these two pictures"

  • +2

I'm happy there is a raffle.
Although, it's annoying they're drawing the next day the cards release? So anyone possibly waiting, miss out on all the AIB cards.
Could they not have drawn them on the same or a day before?

  • +2

I have a bad feeling about the AIB prices. I briefly saw the gigabyte versions listed on CentreCom’s site and they were hovering around the $1500 mark. They are not high end cards. Aussies are gonna get screwed again.

  • I wonder how many FE cards they will have, tried looking through the t&cs but they didn't disclose.

    • I'd love to know too. Considering how this all panned out… Nvidia saying no FE in Australia then back-flipping, only 1 retailer, and now the raffle system. I'm going to guess 100 MAX (3080 & 3090 combined).

I'm hoping there's more stock for 3070, since they've had longer to manufacture and the hard gamers got their 3080. It fits my needs + fractal case better.

      • It's a bad look for sure.

Does anyone know how long production runs of FE 20x0 cards went for? I recall it was only the launch run but can't find articles to confirm. Ideally second stock batch will hit but they may leave that to AIB given apparent cost of the cooler

        • I don't know but there's still new 20 series FE cards floating around. Surely that can't be left over from the launch batch?
However, if this bait and switch theory about 30 series FE is true, then we're truly doomed.

          • +1

@WarriorZ: I don't know either but wish I could get confirmation. I want that cooler design and it seems no AIBs have used it.

The 2080 FR cards I've seen recently were all static bag only / OEM so it's plausible they couldn't move them. The FE has been inferior in past, but this theoretically looks superior.

On bait/switch I see the potential. If one good thing comes out of this (and zero units for retail) at least there's a benchmark price point which may reduce the AIB fleecing in market.

Edit: Did you see this post from @Mi2 earlier with MLiD on YouTube? Really bizarre and seems viable, particularly with ARM deal news - https://youtu.be/SxtfNcm45xk

  • +2

Raffle resulted in this ending up in the forums, so alls well ends well.

    • +1

And thus the RRP is no longer a deal. It's a good thing I didn't vote!

      • +3

Still. Not a single downvote on those RRP Switch posts..

      • This is the cheapest 3080 you're going to see for a while, deal or not.

        • Exactly. But oh no I'm wrong and got downvoted all over the place.

  • -4

This has become a raffle, not a direct sale to public.

I note on Ozbargain's banned items page :

    Under : https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/help:banned_items
    * Gambling/Betting (including Raffles) is on the list.

So this listing should be banned/ removed? or raffles are fair game now?

    • It's a decent question, but reading the link on the page you shared it is 'gambling' specifically that is restricted from advertising by law in NSW. I.e. I can't post 5000x $5 raffle tickets for the RTX 3080 should I have one. As this is at RRP as raised many times it's not 'gambling' (as best I can tell - not a lawyer)

    • Lol, how much did you spend entering this "raffle"?

      • 'Raffle' entry, $0. Time reading the OzB RRP debate, priceless.

  • +3

I've thrown my hat in the ring for a 3080, I think the raffle is a much farer way to do it, hopefully will be screening people with multiple entries and looking for peoples credit card deeta to match up with the given address etc.

Never been fussed on FE cards, but these look both dope AND sick.

I've got a feeling that if I can't snatch a 3080 from nvidia or a third party card on launch, I'm probs not gonna get one at all.

  • Entered the raffle, hopefully I win one and sell it at a marginal markup so I can buy a low end aib and a waterblock.

    • +1

Smartest thing to do tbh. Seemingly because they're announcing the winners a day after the AIB release. Which is so stupid. If you don't win then you lost your chance at buying am aib lmao

      • Yeah I was thinking about this too. If the AIB prices are not too different, wouldn't it be 'safer' to just buy the AIB. Anyway I'm sure there is no rush to get the absolute greatest on day one. There's still batch 2 or so (for AIB I mean).

    • Yeah I'm going to buy one if i win mwave lottery but not sure if I will keep it. If I can sell it for $200 more I'll do that.

  • +2

Lmao this raffle ends AFTER the AIB release? Might as well buy an AIB then sell this for profit… Wtf why not draw the winners a day before?

    • +1

Because how else to MWave capitalise on their investment getting the FE?

      It's all about profit.

      • +1

How does that make any sense? MWave will be selling out of all FE stock in minutes.

        • Simple. MWave marketing…..

Keen buyers know that chances of a FE edition in a raffle on the 18th is slim, will buy an AIB instead once it goes live on the 17th. AIBs at much higher margin than FE for MWave. So they push buyers into AIB models instead of lower margin FE. Or even better some buyers who win a spot in the raffle will buy both!

          • +2

@Skramit: Keen buyers will buy an AIB from anywhere on the 17th (although some might even hold off to wait for the FE possibility). Those sales are locked in. On the 18th all the FE will be sold in minutes. Those sales are locked in. There's no appreciable benefit for MWave to delay the FE sales and I suspect there's likely to be a backlash from angry customers now being told to wait another day (and possibly miss out on limited AIB stock even)

MWave has already had its marketing bonanza just getting an exclusive on the FE cards. Huge spike in name recognition. I can only conclude there's been some legal behind the scenes reason why the AIB boards are getting released a day before the FE (the name now being somewhat ironic given its not founding anything)

            • @pgdownload:

MWave has already had its marketing bonanza just getting an exclusive on the FE cards

Yes which will certainly help sales on it's AIB cards on the 17th.

It's certainly strange to do the raffle on the 18th, but I can only see it as a move to help maximise MWave AIB sales. Many people will have only seen "FE Cards at MWave on 17th" from a few days ago and missed all this raffle BS. So may well turn up to MWave website on the 17th trying to buy…. only to be disappointed and grab an AIB instead.

Luckily in this world of marketing unknowns, neither of us will really ever know the full story or thinking behind it.

              • @Skramit: FYI only I signed up to the mWave RTX3K mailchimp mailing list early yesterday which turned into the raffle list later in the day. I found out when the raffle form said I'm already registered. I guess they're adapting based on feedback

            • @pgdownload: Perhaps they just updated their FAQs:

"What if I purchase an AIB card and win the raffle to purchase a Founders Edition? Vice Versa.
If you did manage to purchase an AIB card and win the chance to purchase a Founders Edition, you can cancel the one you don’t want. Stock for the AIB cards won’t be shipped out till after the Founders Edition raffle ends regardless."

    • Had to do a double take myself. Target audience are customers lining up at 11pm tomorrow to click frenzy a purchase. They decide to have a raffle a day later???

That's just cruel. Surely 3pm tomorrow is the correct time to draw the raffle?

      • Meh,

Buying a GPU in Australia has become this. I no longer care at this point, I'm in the raffle but pretty sure I won't be picked. (its random, and I don't do random, well at least my luck skill doesn't seem to exist)

      • It's not cruel, it's a business decision knowing that a lot of people will go ahead and buy an AIB card for $400 more before the raffle just to secure stock

        • If the FE cards mean't lost profit then sure. But MWave are going to make exactly the same amount of money regardless of when they release the raffle results.

Lets say they have 5000 AIB and 500 FE. Over the next week they might sell 3500 AIB and all the FE. The raffle announcement doesn't change the amount of money in the bank at the end of next week.

          • @pgdownload: If they do the draw before the AIBs go on sale people that don't get an FE will then be more inclined to shop around to different resellers for an AIB, whereas if they do it afterwards those people will presumably order an AIB from Mwave because it's a lot more straightforward to say to Mwave 'please cancel my AIB order now i have secured an FE card'.

Nvidias all over the place, they wanna dominate the ARM sector, most likely increase the cost of phones who knows, nothings final til next year when the arm cpu agreement goes through.

    https://www.itnews.com.au/news/nvidia-buys-arm-for-us40-bill…

So that would lead Intel CPU varients for the pc, amd varients, and Nvidia varients, and apple exclusive varients of proprietary CPU's based on apple products.

    3060,
    3070,
    3080,
    3080 it,
    3090,
    What ever next?

How they market their iteration of cards to the consumer seems messy and horrendous, and that doesn't account for the after market priced up cards.

    https://www.notebookcheck.net/The-NVIDIA-GeForce-RTX-3080-is…

    Rip gaming.

  • +5

It's probably a scam to get more subscribers to their stupid newsletter.

    • Probably, but there's always a solution to that, but I doubt anyone will buy the AIB cards from mwave, one filthy knock back from Nvidia, will just push peoples frustration away from mwave even more, betrayal is what makes other businesses like pccg, and msy to acquire customers, and the raffles just fuel to the fire.

  • +1

    https://twitter.com/johnthesunshine/status/13060444738858803…

I have very little twitter clout but maybe that can be a thing. I didn't cotton on what a scummy move this was from MWave initially.

  • Anyone know what time the AIB cards are going to be released?

    • Yeah, I can't find a single preorder option in Australia :(

      • +1

They arent doing pre orders for the cards.

      • Nvidia has reportedly threatened to blacklist any stores or AIB partners if they offer pre-orders.

    • +1

      11pm tomorrow.
Embargo on reviews ends 11pm tonight.

    • +1

      ShoppingExpress said 17th 11pm.

      • yep that's what i saw on their reddit comment the other day

  • If my stupid housemate has signed up without reading the T&C's (one per household), are we both disqualified or is it just him?

    • +3

I don't think theirs gonna be any MWave reps putting their hands up in this thread…

    • Don't think they're that sophisticated. All it means is they will only ship one out. If they do manage to note a duplicate address they'd just cancel the second one.

  • +4

Hey guys just make you after the raffle you unsubscribe to their mailing list.

    • +1

TBH even if I wanted the FE I'd now go AIB. Wouldn't even bother with the raffle.

    • Why? Unless they give me a coupon of $5 or something I no unsubscribe.. or free delivery or something

      • +1

Odds of getting an AIB are much higher. Available from multiple retailers. Available before the FE. Lastly, wouldn't now give Mwave my business.

        • Limited stock, you have a 0.1% chance getting a fee, well I have no idea how many fee's are in mwaves warehouse, let alone how many are requesting them…

So the percentage is any ones guess, but the percentage of AIB would be far worse then obtaining a Xbox series X, not that I'm vouching any one to buy one.

  • +1

While the 3090 is 3 times more powerful then a Xbox series X, is it still good value if the series X is $199 brand new.

    • Link for $200 Series X please.

      • -1

        https://www.ebgames.com.au/

        $200 deposit.

        Pick up $199. Shhhhh it's $199

The guy at eb games said they could retract the deal before the 31st of October no announcement, but got tired of me complaining about mwave.

        • +2

I recognise all those words but I don't understand what you are saying…

          • -1

            @jonathonsunshine: It's $199, just accept it.

            • @[Deactivated]: I didn't neg you by the way. I like jokes, even when I don't get them.

              • @jonathonsunshine: It's not a joke 😤😤😤😤😤😤😤😤😤😤😤😤😤😤😤😤

    • If you're into ML/AI applications or rendering etc that need a high amount of CUDA cores then absolutely the RTX 3090 is very good value for money. It's basically the new gen TITAN card.

If you're not and just want to play games on it then probably not, stick to the 3080 flagship.

No idea what you said below or the relevance to XSX. No one's cross-shopping these two.

      • Absolutely, but https://www.notebookcheck.net/The-NVIDIA-GeForce-RTX-3080-is…

Good luck to that, everyone will suffer, etherium is about $400 bucks, use these cards and we are fkd in every department, thank gawd the 3080 isn't sli, but the 3090 is.

😭 Nightmares starting all over again.

  • +1

Raffle has been confirmed to include NZ residents, as this will be the only way they can get a FE card it has significantly diminished the chances of any of us winning.

    • 😭 love you new Zealand but ahhh

    • To be fair, we're hurting their chances a lot more than they ours.

      • I'd be happy to sacrifice a card to give to new Zealand, it's harder enough for them, dam you Nvidia.

        • +2

They don't need computer parts, they get to play outside from the 21st :p

          • @jonathonsunshine: I don't think they need a GPU at all. Won't they just be game streaming in 4K over their fancy 1000/1000 fibre national network?

            • @pgdownload: How dare you, I have fttp, but doesn't mean I use 1000/1000, that is if a plan like that existed 😤

              But fttp overrated anyways.

              • @[Deactivated]: One of my FTTP connections gets about 400mbps down and 800mbps up. One day consumer grade connections will have a nice upload I hope 😉

                • @Clear: I use Telstra air, it's almost downloaded Microsoft flight sim, 😒 my mtd box or NBN box stays switched off, well until Telstra airs removed from my prepaid I'll turn it back on.

    • Considering most of them are over here based on the number of cars with fern stickers it shouldn't make a difference.
And most waiting on the therty sucksty.

  • +2

Raffle means next to no chance for anyone to buy it. Best of luck to everyone who entered though!

    • +8

Frankly its a better chance for most than trying to mash keyboards at 11:01pm .

      • I would agree with merj, less of a chance if you actually wanted one.

before the raffle you only had people who were prepared to buy a card looking to do so, now free entry into a raffle for a card with no more supply. Every man and his dog on gaming sites, facebook in NZ is entering even if they wanted it or not because they know they can snap it up and 99% chance of flipping for a profit.

So your chances have absolutely dropped from before.

        • +2

I would say my chances have increased. These were always going to sell out instantly, and I know I could not be online to purchase as I would be sleeping outside if I did this on my wedding anniversary. so for a slight chance I am happy, if not I will get one sometime in the next month or two while I stick with my RX 480 till then.

  • +2

I wonder how many will buy it to sell at a profit vs for their own actual use.

  • I have entered the raffle for a 3080 and 3090. Ultimately I want a 3090 but I will settle for a 3080 if I miss out.
