$3k to Spend for Myself

Thank you all for your contributions.
So after reading all comments below are what I am leaning towards getting;

  • iPhone 12 (thanks to 'Tech and Cars' comment)
  • Aldi MTB bike (thanks to 'imnotgoingtopayrrp' comment)
  • And Coleman Instant Up Gold tent 6P for family camping.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

So stressful these days (both work and family) and trying to adapt myself to the New COVID norm, I need something to reward myself.

I just received tax return of $3k, I want to spend for myself. I was thinking of getting g a nice bike but being a casual rider an expensive bike won’t fulfil me.

Any recommendation?

Buy yourself 3k of food so you have more time to think about it.

    • +12

It might cost a lot more to get that fat off later 🤣

      • +5

        Free isn't it? Just don't eat…

    • +5

      Food for thought!

  • +13

    Get a puppy

    • Try buying into Facebook's new VR device that's coming out soon if your interested in trying that stuff out.

    • +16

I would advise against unless you've been really keen on the idea for a while. Not worth buying on a whim - lot of messes to be dealt with especially when they're young lol

      • +10

It's disgusting when people just abandon them when they're no longer satisfied

        • i agree but i eat (once) living things so i cant judge

    • +4

Puppies are too damn expensive nowadays.

      • +2

Agreed, you’d be lucky to get half a puppy for $3k atm. I’ve been looking and most people want $6000 to $7000 for dogs these days. I honestly don’t know how people can afford it. I mean even saving say $500 a week, you’re saving for at least 12 weeks. Not sure how many families have $500 left at the end of each week.

        • +16

Adopt a greyhound. $70 and all vaccinated

        • +3

low income earners seem to do it just fine somehow

        • +2

I think it's pretty clear the type of dogs you're searching for don't align with your income, there are PLENTY of dogs out there for a lot cheaper than $6k to $7k.

    • You'll probably have a long wait

    • +17

Getting a dog on a whim is a terrible idea.

    • +1

A pet is a massive chore that you cant just one day decide to not do.

    • +4

Please adopt/foster rather than buying pets

    • You can't get one even if you can pay big

    • Puppies cost a lot extra in ongoing maintenance

You have to factor in food, de-sexing, vaccination/checkup visits, flea/tick treatment, insurance, toys etc.

    Custom mechanical keyboard.

    • +15

Depending on choice of keycaps I'm not sure 3k would cover it.

Mmm yes, a bmw that costs $3k but $20k to maintain.

    • +3

Just in case you don't know how to spend an additional $6k in your next post, the repair costs associated from this purchase has got you sorted!

      • +9

Just whatever you do, don't buy insurance. It's a scam!

You do have MS Paint installed on your PC, right?

        /s

        • You do have MS Paint installed on your PC, right?

I thought MS Paint was an Ozbargain user…?

      • I thought it was an appreciating asset though?

    • +6

He wants to burn through the 3k not put it in a high yield investment… Sheesh

  • +4

Buy a surfboard. Spend 2 years getting basics down. Combine next 2 tax returns on a 6 month Indo binge with barrels beers and boobs and die happy. I do it every year.

    • +4

How do you fit 2 years into 1?

      • +19

        Dual citizenship.

        • +6

that is how you age twice as fast.

          • +5

@BuyoTheCat: Could also get 2 girlfriends. That would also cause you to age twice as fast.

            • +1

              @CMH: …and if I get half a girlfriend?

            • +1

@CMH: Then by that logic, all the neckbeards here will live forever

        • +1

Dual citizenship with who though?…can’t be indonesia

    • +1

      you die happy every year?

    Lego

      • +51

More adults probably own Lego than children. Have you seen the prices of some sets?

        • +10

Surely very few adults these days own children. At least, the adults I choose to associate with.

          • +3

@ozbjunkie: One of the best parts of being a parent is that you can buy Lego "for the children".

            • +2

@ashanrath: And you can also leave events early, or not even attend! Children are the perfect excuse.

I can also not attend, and I don't even need an excuse, as I find myself not invited. Seems a win-win situation to me.

      • +4

Stop being ridiculous, man-children also like lego…

Invest it, markets are down, opportunities are plentiful. Hot tip: DXB.

      • +3

I meant short. I haven't lost a small fortune today at all. Dammit.

    • +1

      Cool tip bro

    • +1

Gosh that tip wasn't spectacular :P

    • Goodness me what kind of highly-regulated-company lost 332% in ONE week. It is way better than bitcoin.

Why not put aside half of it to make the rest of your year less stressful.

You don't even know what you want - don't waste this opportunity.

  • +14

If things are going to get even half as rough as some people are predicting when the gov reduces/cancels job keeper/seeker, increasing self-sufficiency might be a good idea.

  • +2

A full blown pc including peripherals but buy the gpu after the 30xx series comes out, then 2080s should be relatively cheap

    • that's what I did with my tax return! I was well due though to be fair - tax return just came at the right time

  • +69

to be honest, I would advise again spending it just for the sake of spending. I have been saving the last 2 years and my friend ask what I am saving for. I answered: "just to have some spare cash in the bank."

I am glad I did because currently, I am unemployed, but not I am not in any immediate financial stress.

If you really want to spend money, donate a little to a good cause.

    • This.

    • How dare you, good sir, propagate sound advise on this forum!

      Ps. Well done.

mountain bike, associated gear, extra fuel costs, repaying the wife with gifts for leaving her with the kids while you have fun should run you up $3,000 in a couple months.

  • Mobile p2w games. With $3000 you should be winning everywhere!

    • For about 3 months….

      • More like 3 weeks.

  • +4

Save another 3k and buy a dirt bike, much more fun with an engine doing the pushing.

Based on post history, you're a married dad with a kid. You also don't seem to have been living in luxury (correct me if I'm wrong).

Based on that info, do something meaningful or a few meaningful things. That's $250/month if you stretch it out over a year. That's a hotel night stay each month for you and the Mrs to get time together. That's 1-2 good nights out per month (really good dinner, dinner and a show etc). That's a family getaway once every 3-4 months.

I get the feeling and wanting instant satisfaction if you've been stressed, but that cash could really help you be stressfree over the next 6-12 months easy. You'll still be treating yourself, but also maybe helping the connections with your family which might have struggled over the last few months (if you've been stressed I have no doubt your marriage hasn't been as close as it could be).

Don't blow it all at once and have regret in 3 months when you can't afford a holiday or long weekend getaway.

    • +48

      "you're a married dad with a kid"

Following that advice he'll end up being; 'a married dad with 2 or more kids' :)
