$3k to Spend for Myself

Thank you all for your contributions.
So after reading all comments below are what I am leaning towards getting;

  • iPhone 12 (thanks to 'Tech and Cars' comment)
  • Aldi MTB bike (thanks to 'imnotgoingtopayrrp' comment)
  • And Coleman Instant Up Gold tent 6P for family camping.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

So stressful these days (both work and family) and trying to adapt myself to the New COVID norm, I need something to reward myself.

I just received tax return of $3k, I want to spend for myself. I was thinking of getting g a nice bike but being a casual rider an expensive bike won’t fulfil me.

Any recommendation?

                • @[Deactivated]: Yes, hence my comment, if I donated all my spare cash I wouldn't have been able to gain the thousands that I have to put me in a comfortable position to donate the cash.
Volunteer work is free for the most part and helps a lot so that's something he can do while investing.
Currently the govt. is helping more than it ever has and is putting these people in a position where they can actually finally afford food without the need to steal from self service checkouts

Your logic is flawed, I just stated it's a smarter move on his behalf to help out more in the long run than a short term payoff, I don't have any interest in flexing how I've been able to donate more than you have by doing this but it makes more sense.

Do you need assistance with anything? I'm more than happy to help you out with clothing, food, bills, anything you need paid ?

@[Deactivated]: Like I said, OP thought he'd have to fork out nearly 6k for dental work, he's already in a position and probably has everything he wants, hence this post. That to me sounds like a comfortable position to donate. You don't need to wait until you're a millionaire.

So how does one turn $3000 into millions?

No I'm good thanks, I have everything I need.

                  • @[Deactivated]: Dang, kinda disappointed no one fell for the bait and e-begging with ridiculous requests. Guess I’ll have to change that…

I ‘need’ a new rifle scope, that counts as a need right?
                    I’ll show myself out…

                    • @mapax: Sure, send me a PM and I'll have a look for ya

Where do you live? Maybe arrange a little in State holiday with your family. It’s great to get away from things, particularly if you’ve been working at home. We took our tribe up to Cairns a few weeks ago. Flights were about $1200 for 5. We hired a 6 berth camper for about $110 a night and did the Great Tropical Drive.

    Hey everyone,

None of you know me personally but I want to ask you thousands of people what I should buy myself with $3000.
Also, I like cycling but don't want a bike.

Get a mirror, take a look at yourself and make a change.

If you can wait the best deals are the Aldi mountain bikes (rebranded Polygon for about $3-400 ish now, not the crappy $89 ones). Other than that, you only need to spend around $6-700 for a great bike from polygon/cell/trek/giant/apollo/avanti etc.

    Put it in your super.

Don't buy a bicycle that loses 60% of its value once you've opened it.

    • +3

Buy a second hand one for 60% off?

    • +2

      Put it in your super.

Stuff that. Who gives a shit about losing value? You wouldn't tell someone to not go on a holiday because it's money you're never going to get back.
He wants to enjoy himself not keep money he won't see for decades.

See the key to bikes is to leave them closed. Once you open them, it's pretty hard to weld them back together.

What's a treat to one person isn't a treat to another!! Is there anything you've always thought 'man it would be nice to have that…?'

Recently my treats to myself were high quality headphones, an expensive tablet stand to help make it easier to draw on my laptop, and an exxy collectable figurine. They made me happy, but couldn't possibly say if they'd make you happy!

Buying gifts for other. FYI more satisfying when you make other happy than buying your own gift.

  • If you consider the time value of money - you could think about where you spend the most time

e.g. I rarely drive so for me I don't wanna spend on a better car

but as a retired person I spend many hours a day sitting on my fattars

in which case my getting-worn-out recliner armchair/workstation (lap desk) could do with a major spend upgrade

last week we ventured out to some furniture stores to check recliners - the most standard recliner from $3-400 delivered - probably fakelite leather from China - was comfy and good as it didn't stick out much from the wall for our limited space - but was unknown quality on the internets - and like 3 months delivery - order now for xmas …

what I could get next day delivery was much more expensive, took up a lot more space, and wasn't quite the size/shape I wanted - so meh

OTOH - there's a new iPhone just released o/s - and I do carry and use such everyday - not ALL the time but I take lotsa photos as a hobby - so that could be an easy $3K spend if that's your wont …

Save it for a holiday to Beechworth when you are able.

I consider the items below treat yourself type items. There definitely are cheaper alternatives/ and you can probably live without these items…

1.) A nice phone. I usually average 3 hours per day on my device. I think it's worth spending the ~$1500 for a flagship with a flagship level display and good amount of storage. Realistically it's ~1100 hours a year, or 45 days spent on it. This would be a nice 'treat' to myself. Usually a $80 p/m contract covers you for this with ~40gb data provided.

2.) A good wireless headphone set to complement the phone. Airpods Pro/QC35 etc.

3.) Move away from pen / paper note taking to a device like this this: reMarkable 2

4.) A kindle + some books. Reading on a non illuminated display. (also nice if you have the wireless headphones to listen to some whitenoise style music while reading).

5.) An apple watch/android equivalent watch. I've really enjoyed mine for the health, find my phone, and general ability to control siri everywhere. Spend $100 more and get a really nice band for it too. For apple watch, jump on etsy for some super nice leather bands.

6.) Not sure if you sit and listen to music, on PC, but a dac/amp for your computer :) something like a creative x3.

7.) If you work from home, move to a full USB C type setup with your monitor / keyboard mouse. So get a dell d6000 or similar type docking station. It's nice to be able to plug 1 cable and disconnect my work laptop and plug in my personal laptop.

8.) Some good branded tools (cordless drills, socket sets, high pressure washer etc). You'll keep it for the rest of your life and you'll be happy you spent the money on the good stuff everytime you use it.

I can probably go on for longer, but thought I should stop…

  • Maybe upgrade some of your technology if it needs it. New phone, laptop, speakers, headphones. Something that will give you good return and usage

If you are into PC gaming we are heading into exciting times :) that could be an option

  • Get a big a$$ tv.. like an 86" or a 100" and connect it to an Xbox One X.

  • Toilet roll

  • A decent automatic/solar watch. Brands like Seiko or Citizen make fantastic watches at reasonable prices that lasts many, many years, or even a preloved designer watch like Omega on sites like Chrono24 can be obtained if you prefer more luxurious branding.

  • Another ‘post and ghost’.
OP is nowhere to be seen.

Am I invisible? I negged you so now you can see me. 🤣

      • I’ve just upvoted your, because obviously I’m blind!

  • I recently purchased a brand new $4k-ish bike setup and love it!

For months I ummed and ahhed about cost, depreciation, insurance and high probability of stacking as I am a newbie with limited experience on trail, gravel, path and road.

I have been happily riding more than I did on my old bike and haven't regretted my purchase at all. Better yet, with covid, cycling has been a great retreat from home and WFH.

If you want a good bike, head to a bike store a try out a few bikes.

It's rare to have a few grand sitting around with no commitments, especially if you have a family too, so I'd advise investing that money in good quality things that you normally wouldn't have the cash for.

Buy some good quality, well-reviewed pillows to give yourself a better night's sleep.
Buy some quality leather shoes (if you need them) or a tailored suit.
Invest in a KitchenAid, Le Creuset or a nice knife set if you like baking/cooking.
Put it towards a new couch maybe or even some Art. All those things that will last you for a long time but you might not have the money sitting around to buy at other times.

You don't want to look back on this time and regret spending it on frivolous things (or you might not care, I don't know - I don't know anything about you).

  • Get into Euro-rack modular synthesizers: It's a great way to blow stupid amounts of cash.

  • Your first idea was the best idea. At the end of the Tour de France the bikeshops will have discounts. $3K will get you a road bike, get one of those.

  • Put it into your super and collect another $1000 tax return next year.

  • I'd get the sweetest VR setup and escape this world for a bit!

  • pokies

  • Neither to all 3 buy a Xbox Series X, ps5, furniture, new TV.

Or mobile plan that supports Xbox gamepass cloud and buy a Asus Rog 3 phone

  • Inspired by last night's drama at the Tour De France i went out this afternoon on my Trek Madone roadbike. Down some quiet suburban roads felt like I was floating, amazing feeling and one of the few pleasures left here in Iso Melbourne lockdown. Love my bike!!
