    • +2

yeah it'll be pulled from steam but if you own it you can still play it obviously

      • Do they not allow free to play or something?

        • +9

Result of Epic making it an Epic Games Store exclusive.

          • +1

            @awaiko: How monopolistic of them!

        • +4

Two of the biggest games on Steam are F2P and are developed by Valve so definitely not the issue!

        • +1

No, but Epic bought Psyonix. They're putting RL on the Epic Store for obvious reasons.

  • +3

    Is Rocket League cross platform?

    • +1

      Yes it is :)

    • +8

Cross platform play and party, progression coming with the free to play update

    • +1

Yeah, was one of the first games to go fully cross-platform play.

      • -3

so will be full of hackers like Modern Warfare?

        • +4

I play on PS4 but it's had cross-platform play between PS4 and PC ever since it released 5 years ago, never had an issue with hackers. You can turn off cross-play if need be though (unless you're already on PC and that doesn't help you lol).

        • +8

Rocket League is a game that you cant really hack, other than maybe showing ball trajectory, but you still need mechanical skill to hit it haha, I've never seen any cheats on 3 years of playing on PC.

    • Everything except for Mac OS. I know cos I bought a PS4 just to play RL :)

      • +2

        And except for Linux/SteamOS :(

        • +1

It worked fine in steam via proton last time there was a free play weekend. That's no guarantee it's still working, but for free why not give it a shot?

          • +2

@slimpickings: You have to be running it with Windows binaries for it to work “properly”. The devs cut support for the native Linux version on multiplayer.

            • @frankfu1122: Yeah, that's kind of what I'm hinting at. I bought the game when it was available natively on Linux and I'm still bitter that they killed it.

I don't care about Proton/Wine, especially given that anti-cheat causes issues with some games on it. I'm glad it exists but if I'm forced to use it to play a game I simply won't buy it.

I also have a deep dislike for Epic, especially after that whole debacle.

              • @Zorlin: Bitter? That makes two of us haha! I had hope high hopes for Psyonix. I supported them by buying Rocket League for every single platform (Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox one and PC)… and this is what I got in return ;(

I guess from their perspective Linux is such a small user base they easily discard without causing a massive backlash.

                • +1

@frankfu1122: It makes sense from a cost perspective - they had very few actual macOS and Linux users. Still sucks, though.

                • +1

                  @frankfu1122:

So it was YOU who made them popular enough, thus worthwhile enough, to buy!

                  shakes fist

  • +13

I bought this a couple of years ago on xb1 and have never played it.

    • +5

You're missing out then haha. Literally play it almost daily, addictive once you get a handle on the mechanics

      • +1

        Terribly addictive game!
Unforunately comes with a fair bit of toxicity, though changes to banning etc have improved.
There are a lot of people that play with a terrible attitude, negative towards a team mate if they make a mistake or straight up giving up in a game that has only just started because you concede a goal.
I know these things aren't unique to RL but when you're playing doubles you rely hugely on your team mate, if they decide not to cooperate then your game is basically (profanity).

        • Cannot agree more. Had it multiple times where the opposition has scored a lucky goal or 2 from kick off the my team mate either stops playing, leaves or just plays the blame game. Annoying when 2 goals can be scored back so quick usually.

          • +1

@Damannation: Exactly, it's extra frustrating because with RL you can have amazing comebacks, but you need to have the right attitude to make it happen. You could be 3-0 with a minute to go and still bring it back for an OT winner, those games are amazing too!

Regardless, even if you're getting beaten by better players you don't give up, playing against better players can help you learn and improve. You have to up your game and adjust, however there seems to be this sad, soft attitude of just throwing in the towel if it gets hard.

Doubles without partying with a friend can get very painful in some games. Even when my team mate does something a bit crap I try to back them up "No problem." etc, it's in your own interest to get your team mate playing well, not to cut them down.

            • @visualdescript: I usually just team up with random and most the time they are good. Most my mates don't play it because they never got past the learning curb and prefer to play FPS games unfortunately.

      • +4

Almost daily here too. I’ll eventually get good

        • Haha same boat, I consistently get platinum for duel and did peak briefly in Diamond but just can't get there. Some people's aerial skill is insane!

    • Don't bother, I'm sure I'll get downvoted to oblivion but it's such a bad game.

  • +1

Why is this free now? was it becoming unpopular?

    • +7

They'll make more on cosmetics, and they have to be working on Rocket League 2.

      • have to be working on Rocket League 2.

        whoa why

        • Same reason Microsoft is working on Windows 11

        • It's a shame because Rocket League is a reasonalbly well balanced competitive game, it doesn't need any crazy changes. It works well.
The game is simple but all the complexity comes from player skill and strategy, the best kind of competitive game.

    • +15

      Microtransaction fest…

      • +17

I spent $10 about 3 years ago on some random boxes and got some glowing wheels and junk, it was like the biggest waste of cash in my life,

        • I used to sell the crates to some website. Probably made around $100USD all up

        • Well you could also get the battlepass for like 15 bucks which gives you content every season if you rank it up to unlock the next one for free.

        • I got earbuds in TF2 for playing with my Mac, and years later sold them for $50. I considered keeping them, if they are so rare maybe I should keep it. Now they are only worth $8.

      • +1

Was good before it got bought out, at least you got decryptors at special events. Now you get nothing and 80% of the stuff you get is "blueprints" then have to pay a ridiculous amount for the credit.

        • +2

Yeh the blueprints thing I haven’t even looked at since it came in

    • +5

Not so much unpopular. More it's always been free to play in design. But it cost 20 bucks or whatever up front as well. It's had DLC forever. Then Microtransactions. Then Lootboxes. Then season passes… It's been build this way for a long time now.

I remember when they charged reasonable prices for DLC cars at $3 (batmobile, delorean). Now they're like $15-20.

      • +1

The season pass has been fairly reasonable, costs 1k credits but if you get to tier 100 you get 1k credits back so it enables you to buy the next one.

I think 1k credits is around 10-15 bucks

        • +4

I actually agree. But it only works when you have enough to devote that much time to lvl all the way to 100. I'm never confident I could get there.

          • @Valowick: It doesn't take too much, especially with double the challenges and +80%xp.

    • It's an old game so probably nobody was buying it anymore. So it makes sense to hook new players by going free to play (and maybe make some money off them through cosmetic purchases).

  • +1

    But no MacOS :(

    • +21

If you want to game, get a gaming platform ;-)

      • +6

        Touche !
My 10yo monopolises the PS4, 14yo monopolises the Switch, and wife monopolises the Android TV.
        Sad life :)

        • +4

If your mac specs are decent then you could maybe dual boot? :)

        • Man you just described my family too!

        • +1

Boot camp Windows and you're fine

        • +1

          play monopoly with the family

  • +24

I have >2000 hours in this game, an order of magnitude more than any other multiplayer game I've ever played. It's brilliant. Easy enough to learn the basics, tremendously difficult to learn the more advanced techniques (for example, I am still rubbish after that much time.)

Whilst the microtransactions aspect has always been a bit scummy, at least it's purely cosmetic! Can't recommend the game enough, happy to answer any questions about it.

    • +1

Is this game as good as I think it is?

      • +3

I think so! Even the casual modes do a pretty good job at matching you against people in your own skill level so once you get the basics down you will get entertaining and close matches. F2P especially should help with that, with (presumably) a huge new pool of players just getting started.

Once you get to the higher levels every match can be super intense games of reflexes and tactics. One wrong move will cost you a goal, and you need to plan your plays in advance and adapt to whatever the opponent is doing.

The community can be very toxic at times though. I very quickly turned all chat off and only play with my friends on my team, which helped!

        • I like the players who want to forfeit after 1 goal is scored against…

What I do then is, not FF, hope I can score 1 back, then I hit the FF

    • +4

      What keeps you coming back?
      Filthy ~700 hours casual here.
One day I realised I was usually in a worse mood after playing and gave it up.

      • +2

Always being on the edge of promotion (or relegation) to another division still gets me, as does the first time you pull off something you'd failed at a thousand times. It's also just about the only game my friends and I have in common, so it's permanently in the rotation.

At 700 hours though, it definitely sounds like you got value for money!

      • It's massively addictive and if you have a competitive personality it can definitely get ya. I'm the same, it can make me so tense and pent up with rage and even just make me feel terrible about myself, BUT it can also fill you with so much joy and make you feel like an absolute GOD.

    • Yo! Whats your steam I've got like 3k hours but always up to having more steam friends.

    • Do you have family or do you go outside? :)

(ex WOW addict here, so no judgement)

    • It might be all that, but is it better than Chu Chu Rocket on the Dreamcast? This is still the best multiplayer game ever IMO

  • +5

People are playing something other than Among Us right now!?

  • I think I got this for free from origin the other day. I'd better boot it up for a match

    • +2

Must have been something else. This is only on steam

      • +3

Yeah, I think Rocket Arena was free the other day which is an easy one to get mixed up with!

  • Sweet!!

  • +3

Remember, everyone gang up on the Yellow team! ifykyk

    • +3

      Haha
      The falling guys meme

  • +1

I'm not a fan of football games, not a fan of car games, but somehow this game plays so beautifully!
So glad it is going FTP

  • -5

Just as I hit Champ in both 2's and 3's at the same time! See you all soon with my weekly new account.

  • +8

I have ~5000 hours in rocket league and I don't regret a single second. Get this game. Play with friends or dont, it's great.

  • Great news, been keen to try this game.

  • So its only free if you have played it before? Or is there some other way to get it free?

    • +2

It will be free for everyone.

    • +1

it will be free on PS4, XB, Switch and PC starting from 23rd Sept, regardless of whether you have played the game before or not.

  • +9

This game was the best $12.80 I ever spent (2015).

  • +1

Great find OP! Will finally get around to giving this game a shot once it becomes free (:

  • +7

I’d love all the RTX 3080 neg voters to get in here:

“This is a new RRP, not a deal”

  • +2

Got this for 'free' with PS plus. I have never spent more hours with a game.

  • What a Save!!!

  • +2

While it may seem counter-intuitive, I would purchase the game now on Steam before the launch as it will grant you access to the awesome custom Steam Workshop maps/training drills (unless Epic removes access to them, which they have made no announcement about).
