Be aware they randomly check eligibility for student pricing.
Have been “audited” twice myself in past 12 months.

    • How do they do that?

      • +4

They contact you to provide evidence of eligibility for education pricing.
So student id, evidence of being a teacher etc.
if you fail to provide it they adjust your order to non education pricing.

        • +3

Do primary school kids have a student ID? I know my son has a school email address but not sure if he's been issued with a student ID or not.

          • @Trishool: Can’t say I had this issue
We had student university Id so we were fine.
But not sure how they would validate a primary school student.

          • +2

@Trishool: Do primary studens count for education discount? I always thought it was only higher education that got student pricing offers.

          • @Trishool: Same here - my primary school kid doesn't have ID - have to pay full price for movie tickets as well! Whereas my high school kid gets discount due to ID!!

            • +2

@bajirao: send them a pic of the school photo and point THAT'S MY CHILD

            • +1

@bajirao: I would think primary school kids would pay Child prices for movies…

              • +1

@cola2002: Yes but at times student price is cheaper than Child price - for example my local Event cinemas had promotion for most of last year where student ticket was the cheapest (need to show school ID card).

    • do they demand extra payment?

      • Yes. They change to non education price and hold your order until balance is paid.

        • +1

The trick is to say "no thank you" when a business refuses to honor a promo deal that they've already invoiced you for. Apples products are already marked up 100%, if that's not enough you tell them to get lost.

I have unidays from my 20 year old alumni email account and that's usually 2-3% cheaper than the direct Apple edu price. Never been checked.

          • @[Deactivated]:

            alumni email account

            How to get this?

            • +2

@capslock janitor: his university provides an email address to all students, but didn't revoke it after he graduated like most universities do, so he was able to continue using it.

              • +2

@lostn: After grad, you can sign up on your alumni program.
I think he did the same.
Most of the uni seize your account and email after 3months of graduation

    • Obviously parents can buy it for their kids. You know a kid, don't you? Ideally a cousin or nephew with same last name.

Let me check my white van

    • edit

  • +3

even at 499 normal price, i still recommend it over the 7th gen. the cpu power will make it last much longer before too laggy to use.

    • -3

Big w has it for $449. If you combine with 5% wish gc, you can get it for roughly $426.

For $43 extra 8th gen is worth it IMO

      • $449 for 7th Gen @ bigW

        • +5

          yes thats what I meant.
          $449 for 7th gen(big w)
$469 for 8th gen( apple edu store)

  • +1

128gb is $635.80 on there too

    • Showing $619 for me.

    • +4

I'd recommend the bigger storage. You're stuck with whatever you buy for life.

      • for life? Nah, sell it and buy another one if you cannot stand 32GB later on.

Investing too much on an A12 based device isn't very wise. But, if you are on a limited budget, then it is understandable.

        • +1

Agree in general but seems an exaggeration as the A12 is still very fast.

I even still use my mini 2 which is an A7 / M7 !! and that’s still fine performance-wise. My X with the A11 B has no performance issue on anything I use whatsoever… so with the A12 being faster again….

          • @Mortal Krumpet: It's about if you were to purchase one, you should try to look at it from a 2020 point of view.

iPad 8th gen - A12 is really for someone who really needs an iPad now and don't want to spend too much. Thus, it's best to avoid upgrading it too much. A12 doesn't have wireless ax. Bluetooth looks like 4.2 (Apple… why? Could it be a typo?). It looks like Apple won't put USB 3.0 in most devices with lightning port.

iPhone SE is already A13. As Apple owners, you/we really should be more forward looking. It's hard, but we cannot let what we currently own cloud our judgement.

            • +1

@netsurfer: Yes - I know what you mean but I’ve started to look at it from a different perspective. It’s not to say that there isn’t going to be newer and better - the question is more ‘do you need better’ and do you need the latest and greatest.

I understand A16 will be out at some point in a few years for example, or Bluetooth 6, but, if I only need and are happy with Bluetooth 2.0, and a processor/OS that runs everything for at least several years (evidenced by the A7 being fine) is that a problem? These are the philosophical questions of the day :)

Meanwhile I upgrade to the new stuff anyway haha.. I just pass my other stuff off to family.

    • +1

      That's such an expensive leap…

  • +4

They are basically saying people to "just buy the 128GB version man, dont be a joke!"

    • +2

32gb version is fine if it’s just browsing and reading ebooks and streaming shows.

      • +2

yes I guess so. But then if the usage going to be that limited, no point getting the latest version.

        • +1

it really depends on use case…. the 7th gen ipad that i have takes a lot of abuse and use from the family. The difference in the old and new gen cost is negligible imo when considering the OS support period. (Which is pretty much one of the big reason I got into apple eco system in the first place. Outside of out-of-the-box parental controls like screentime.)

otherwise I would've bought heaps of android tablets… (which i did, and recently chucked out quite a few that i accumulated over the years…. from android 2 to 6)

          • @slowmo: how do you sell your android tablet? I got samsung tab s4 and have no idea where to sell

            • +2

@Nick K: I went with mobile monster for the more recent models but most of the androids I have, ends up in the council ewaste drop offs. I still have the original Lenovo tablet somewhere in the house that runs on android v2 waiting for the next round of drop offs. I counted slightly over 20 android devices I accumulated 2008-2018. Now I’m down to 5. Ever since I got onto the iPads, I realised I didn’t have to keep buying a new one each year.

    • This or the S6 Lite?

  • -4

Sorry but this is just standard education price

    • -4

It is a deal because it is just launched pricing that you can get edu.

Please find me the same standard edu pricing for iPad Air that was just launched. Thx.

      • +4

        Not sure I follow you?
ipad air 64GB WIFI Retail Price is $899
ipad air 64GB WIFI Education Price is $829

Everything is slightly cheaper under education pricing

        • +3

This is OzBARGAIN, so even a saving of $0.01 is WORTH POSTING.

        • I stand corrected.
When I tried buying the ipad air yesterday it was staying at 899 even i logged on to unidays. looks like i need to return my other ipad that i got instead now. lol.

      • +5

Just because the product has arrived on the educational store at its set price doesn't mean it's a deal…

        • -1

          oh yes.
Want to say same thing for the Samsung EPP as well?

          • @fantoo: Samsung EPP pricing is not fixed. It varies. They have "sales" like any other store, so it's worth posting those because pricing is constantly updated. Sometimes it's 20% off, sometimes 30%, sometimes 45%.

However, Samsung doesn't like EPP deals being shared.

            • @lostn: This was posted to let many people know that for fraction of price they could get a latest ipad instead of 2019 one.

              Thanks for your effort

        • It does if the community believes it is and votes it as such.

  • +7

    “Please do not abuse it”

    Uh, huh…

  • -1

32 GB doesn't really cut it anymore, personally.

    • +3

Especially in education, few apps, project files, onedrive and the thing is full.

  • You knew when you posted this it was going to get abused…..

  • -2

Do they still get slowed on purpose by Apple via iOS updates after 6months?

    • Not after six months

    • +3

My iPad Air (1st gen) is still going strong after 7 years.

      • my ipad pro 2016 is very choppy now

      • Strong? Mine is slow as…

        • +1

My iPad Air 2 is going about as well as it always has 5 years down the track. It's definitely slow compared to my iPhone XS however that's to be expected since the CPU in that is 2.5x faster!

These things generally don't get slower, everything else just gets faster and our expectations shift.

          • @tp0: I have ipad Air 1. Takes about 5secs to display a page when tap on safari…. time for an upgrade anyway, to the new air or a discounted pro.

    • +1

Well these run iPadOS, not iOS and have the single core performance of a Ryzen 3 3100 or i5 6600K.

      I think it’ll go alright.

      • in synthetic benchmarks, sure.

There's no way it can sustain 6600K speeds with that thin a profile and fanless for very long. Those are desktop CPUs with huge heatsinks and big fans.

    • +3

6 months? No, about 18 months, probably a touch, yeah but overall an iOS device will outlast its Android counterpart in the same regard. I’m a heavy user of both so talking from a wealth of experience. No fanboy bias here.

    • +1

Don’t update it if you don’t want to. I don’t if I’m not satisfied with the slow down from the extra features. Fact is though, you choose between an Apple device slowing down (if that’s your belief) after 7 years of updates, vs an Android device no longer being supported by the manufacturer after 2 years.

Not offering you the choice shouldn’t be praised.

      • My 2012 iPad was hardly usable in 2016 as it had slowed down significantly and some apps no longer able to install due to older OS.

Look, 4 years is not too bad but a far stretch from 7 years.

  • just 30 dollars difference on the 32gb model.. hmm

  • +4

Not sure if this is a deal - this is just the regular education pricing!

    • yeah yeah.
20% off is usual @ Samsung as well.
Maybe we all should go and neg those deal as well

      • +6

Not sure what you're trying to say here.

This is the normal education pricing this isn't a deal.

        • It is a deal though if the community believes it is, and votes it as such.

      • +1

20% off is usual @ Samsung as well.

Samsung's EPP is not always 20%. It has regular sales like any other store. I usually wait for 30%.

  • -2

    Easy ow price match

    • +2

Price match educational pricing? Have you had success?

      • that might be one in thousands.

Usually they dont let you pricematch

Take you student card with you can just do normal price match.

        Doesnt hurt on trying

  • +1

I don't even know which gen you're up to, Apple, just tell us the year/quarter.

    • this is 8th gen one

  • 32GB hey

  • The ipad mini5 (2019) is still more cost-effective. Same Soc, same ram,mini5 has more storage and better selfie camera.

  • We can get the almost same pricing if we use the 5% of discount from JB hifi

The IPad 8th Gen 32 gb
    Normal Price : $499
    Edu Price : $469
    Discount : 4.62%

The IPad 8th Gen 128 gb
    Normal Price : $649
    Edu Price : $619
    Discount : 6.01%

    • I think your maths is a bit wrong here on the 128GB discount from Apple.

$619 discounted down from $649 is a 4.62% discount. Unless my maths is horribly wrong it is cheaper to get it from JB/Good Guys/etc. @ a 5% eGift card discount than from the Apple Edu program as factoring in the 5% discount it will come to $616.55?

      • +1

yeah.. my bad.. even i am saying the same . Rather than running after the Apple Edu site just use the 5% discount from JB etc.

  • Thanks OP. Needed some iPads, picked up a couple of them.

  • OW should be able to price beat this right?

    • You can try your luck

  • -2

thx for the info its certainly a deal and i am sure many ppl didnt know about it.
i remember when i used to get negged for posting xblg monthly games and was told its not a deal as its for members on xblg only etc.
some ppl on this forum arevery picky.

  • Anyone's order shipped yet? I figured it was supposed to be a September 18 release, but my order is saying that it won't deliver until October 10…

    • It will be a September 18 announcement, but won't ship for a few weeks, just like when they do a release for an iphone, announcement and then 2 weeks later shipped or at shops

      • Wasn't it announced on the 15th, for a retail release on the 18th?

    • i ordered the morning after the event, and i got it on the friday. I suppose stocks has ran out.

  • Officeworks are usually a few dollars cheaper, but Apple tends to control pricing, so won't be much difference when they are first released….
