      What's wrong with that?

Many people want to avoid buying Chinese-made products.

I'm one of them and go out of my way to do so - despite the cost

              • +1

@Apollo-Fc: Although Spanish flu first manifested itself in Kansas, it was brought to North America via Chinese labourers who were in transit through that region on their way to the Western front in Europe to work for the British and French on their war effort

            • @jims2020: Actually, Vietnam is also a communist country. Non-Chinese product may still use materials from China. Sometimes it maybe difficult to find or check the "made in China" logo. They may be hiding in the public, at school, in your friend or parent's house. You may be using Chinese product for a long time unconsciously.

@maxdba: Yep, it is a socialist nation (euphemism for communism) - however offers much greater human freedom when compared to #CCP. Atleast they are not out to conquer the world, so they are less of a problem to democracies unlike the #CCP.

          • @Apollo-Fc: you're right
avoiding chinese products is like avoiding the US technologies
they're just everywhere in modern lives

          • @Apollo-Fc: So using your logic, we should just accept that everything that we buy and use is made in China and can do nothing about it. I don't get that. Most stuff (unfortunately, not all) has a non-Chinese alternative - albeit at a higher cost. I'm going out of my way to buy the alternative - whatever the cost (and it can be significant.

My phone was made in Taiwan but much of the stuff I own was of course made in China. And there's the problem, we've made China into a manufacturing superpower, and although they are no longer often the cheapest choice, their incredibly efficient supply and logistic chains make them the number one option for supplying goods at low cost, quickly. Decoupling our economies from reliance on China will therefore be difficult but we must and I'm doing my little bit to help this.

Made in France Tefal products are generally of better quality than those that are made in China.

        • +1

The purpose of my comment was only to highlight this, was not expecting it to start a heated debate…

      • +1

If you can't understand then allow me to educate you a bit. Tefal needs to cover the cost of using Jamie Oliver name as a brand and they can't increase the price too much due to the competition in the kitchen ware market. So what can they do if they need to sell at the same price but have more marketing cost? => lower the producing cost/quality of the product.

  • Hey guys, does anyone have any experience with these clipso minute easy pressure cookers? I'm thinking they look like a good alternative to a standalone pressure cooker…?

    • Not good. The valve system broke on mine after ~18 months and the warranty is very tricky, only on non-stick material etc.

Got the stack (removable handle) ones. Only problem is you can not buy them individually to add to your stock.

    • +1

This is a problem I have too.. I need to replace one of my non-stick frypans from the Ingenio set, but can't without buying a whole set..

  • can anyone recommend a pan for cooking steak?

    • +13

      Cast Iron

      • hands down

    • +1

Sous vide then briefly sear in butter or over grill, the type of pan matters much less then imo as it's just a brief sear.

      • +4

Sous vide is great for alot of things, but steak is not one of them. Reverse seared in oven, paired with a digital thermometer is hand's down the best method for steak.

        • Thanks. Just learnt something new.

        • At a 1-2inch thickness, sousvide steal yields great results for steaks. It jsut really shines on thicker meats like a roast.

for example, a thick cut tomahawk steak cooks more evenly in a sousvide compared to reverse searing.

          • @Kill Joy: It's all up to personal preference. I don't like how much juice gets expelled when sous viding a steak and I hate having to dry it up with multiple paper towels to get a good crust on it. There is no other way to cook chicken breast beside sous vide though.

            • +1

@Reddich24: If you have a particular way you like your steak crust i can see a possible annoyance in that respect, we all have our preferences in how we like things and methods, but to say sous vide is not great for steaks is just silly. It's fantastic for thick steaks.

            • +1

              @Reddich24:

It's all up to personal preference.

100%, but i'll correct posts with facts to keep ozbargainers informed.

I don't like how much juice gets expelled when sous viding a steak

The same amount of lliquid gets expelled during other methods of cooking (given both steaks hit the same temperature), it just looks like a lot pooled in a bag vs evaporating off the steak with other cook methods.

I hate having to dry it up with multiple paper towels to get a good crust on it

I admit this is a bit of a pain and unappetizing compared to other methods0. But really you should only need to pat down each side twice, right before it goes into your VERY HOT cast iron pan. By hot, i mean you should be using a high smoke point oil and it should be smoking (grapseed oil is my preference). Add butter for a richer crust.

Overall its not that sousvide is better than any other cooking method for steak, its just much easier and consistent then other methods. Most steaks under 1.5 inches i can cook to perfection with just a cast iron pan 90% of the time. But my steaks come out perfect 100% of the time with sousvide given its all very easy science.

If you're a professional chef, sousvide is just wasted time on steak. For most of us, its the only way we can get resturant quality steak from a cheap cut.

              • +1

@Kill Joy: Sure, sous vide yields the most consistent and fool proof methods, you get end to end consistency. But you lack the deeper flavours from a method like the reverse sear. I've cooked alot of sous vide steak and they always end up less flavorful. Reverse sear is not all that much harder than sous vide provided you have a meat thermometer. Also not everyone would have a sous vide circulator but most people do have ovens and thermometers.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JEPSZshO8Rw - This is a great resource I recommend everyone watch if you love steak.

        • I agree, steak needs to cook at high enough temp and long enough for Maillard reaction to occur.

    • +1

What Bhot said.. You need a pan that can withstand high heat. Non-stick can't.

      Check out Solidteknics..

      • How about the the Tefal Stainless Steel?

        • +1

Stainless is OK, but requires a lot of oil to stop food sticking.. Cast iron/carbon steel can be seasoned to form a non-stick coating.

          • +2

@geekninja: stainless is great. there is nothing wrong with adding oil in cooking infact it makes food taste much better obviously. non stick was created due to the "fat is bad" fad that is slowly starting to die off which it should.

      • ok cool thanks, so I guess that rules alot of Tefal product out?

I'd say more like 20% off what you can find elsewhere.

eg Pro Selection Non-Stick Induction Frypan 30cm is $64.95, but can be found elsewhere for $79.

  • Prices are high compared to bigw and wooly. for eg 28 cm wok is only 38 in wooly.

    • +1

The Woolworthes / Big W Tefal are the cheaper models generally.

      • Oddly enough, the ones that big w/kmart/target sell are pretty much all made in france. Whereas many of the 'expensive' ones that myer/djs/harris scarfe sell, such as the jamie oliver range are made in china.

    • We have a Tefal Hard Anodised Wok bought 5 years ago, very happy with it, paid about $100. The model we have DOESN'T HAVE TEFLOAN COATING OR RED DOT.

      • +4

        Why screamin.

        • That was critical bit of information!

Most non-stick cookware in our house have ended up in the bin within 12-24 months.

          • @VluHunt8r: Yeah, it's a shame I can't get more than 3-5 years out of non-stick ones. Either wears down or once on too high temperature for too long and the residue just stays there forever.

I'm looking at Tefal Eternal Stainless Steel now.

            • @bouncybear: Thats why i'm slowlyt converting my fleet of cookware to cast iron. The only thing i use non-stick for is scrambled eggs and anything too acidic or saucy.

  • -1

Do yourself a favour, don't buy Tefal chemical pan..stick to goold old SS..your body will thank you

    • +1

Just dont heat the tefal pans up to searing hot temps? I dont want to deep fry my eggs for them not to stick in a ss pan

      • Then you just gotta master the cooking egg in SS pain or in my case , a wok ;)

        • SS pain is accurate

          • +1

@Reddich24: Lol..it can be a pain at first, but the thought of eating nonstick chemicals is scarier..it's all about the oil and heat!

            • @Lancerx: No I agree, I have a ss pan for when i need plenty of fond and I do like that it can take a beating. I do keep a non stick pan around for lower heat cooking e.g eggs

    • Do you know how bad nickel is for you, highly carcinogenic.

I've yet to have one non-stick pan from Tefal that lasts longer than 6 mths.

    • I've had my tefal wok for over 5 years. I think I should throw it out cos all the coating has peeled off

    • Guessing you're heating it up too high if that's the case.

  • Scanpan or Bessemer lads. Even circulon is okay.

Pro Selection Non-Stick Induction Frypan is pretty good quality. I've been using it for almost 3 years and it's held up well with a gas stove. I have a cheap Tefal that I use for camping and for $20 it's ok. For the price they met my expectations.
