Huawei Y9 Prime 2019 Blue 128GB $199 (in-Store) @ JB Hi-FI

1020

I got this phone last year for $300 and I thought it was a great phone for the price. Just noticed it drop to $199 and I'd say it is fantastic at this price point:
Good:
- Local Warranty
- 128gb Memory + Micro SD Card
- 4GB Ram
- Dual SIM
- Pop Up Camera
- Large notch less display
- 4000mah battery (get fantastic battery life 2 day+)
- UI Runs pretty smooth, and unless you are into gaming it will serve you well
- Wide angle camera, macro camera
- Plastic back (won't shatter)
- Comes with free case and screen protector (already installed) in the box
- Rear Finger Print sensor
Bad:
- While the extra cameras are nice for the occasions, the main camera is average. It gets the job done but nothing special. It performs worst at low light.
- Can be a bit thick and heavy in hand.
- No NFC

Update: Out of stock for delivery as pointed out by @TheDukeOfNukem, only available for store pickup.

I don't need anywhere near 128gb, shame they don't have a 32gb option for a bit cheaper for me tbh, but nice find.

Find a phone 5 years or older, you may find a 16GB one to be satisfied

      • -1

I'm currently rocking a BlackBerry Classic, it's got 16GB and I've used maybe 3 of them. I don't store anything local, and hate most apps so I use the web version of sites wherever I can. Spotify and mobile Facey and YouTube got me covered.

        • +2

Sadly, nowadays apps are ginormous… A few months ago I was forced to temporarily use a phone with 16GB of internal storage and I was not able to use half the built in google apps as they were all out of date and there wasn't enough space to update them. Mind you this was a really old phone. I think now 64GB is the minimum.
Chrome, YouTube, Maps and Google Play service it self will consume something like 3GB+.

          • +1

@OpayuOnam: Another reason I hate apps that would (9 times out of 10) run fine in a browser, storage requirements. Extra loading time, more storage, a wasted icon on my screen, (oftentimes) a means to shove more ads onto my phone, etc. there's plenty of reasons to hate an app existing when it does nothing. If OzBargain had an app made tomorrow that didn't add any new features, you surely wouldn't download it? I feel like the only people who would would be people who want "the convenience" of having a direct button there for it, but to those people I say, have you ever heard of bookmarks?

But anyways, yeah I always hated that stuff. I'd go into the settings and disable apps I didn't use, Google Videos, YouTube, etc. once you see how much space their regular updates has taken up on your phone, and then remove it, you get a nice bump in storage back.

PS I mostly hate apps because of Facebook FORCING you onto Messenger. I never liked that app, and I still don't like it, but making it harder and harder and harder to just use the m.facebook.com site for messages has pissed me off for well over half a decade now. You can still get around it easily enough, but it's just annoying, because unless I want to do video calls and stuff that was introduced on the app rather than the browser version, everything I want can be done on the site. I can send photos, messages, GIFs, whatever, basically everything except calling, which I don't do via Facebook anyway. Don't force me onto your bullshit, Fu/ckerberg.

            • @TheDukeOfNukem: @TheDukeOfNukem nah mate I'm with you on this one, don't get me wrong. For example I have not installed Reddit app and will never do, even though they keep trying to force me to do so. Certain things such and maps and YouTube I just use the app as it's faster and more features than the website. I do not get an app for every single website which is the grand these days. Even then Google apps are growing bigger and bigger in size.
              Facebook Messenger is disgusting.

Don't speak for others if you don't even have much experience of a newer phones.

          • +1

@OMGJL: If you're talking to me, few things

            1. I have spoken for no one but myself.
            2. I have used plenty of more modern phones, plenty. At the end of the day a phone is a phone, and I chose the lovely keyboard of a Blackberry over paying several hundred (or more) for the latest name brand yearly revision to a phone that will largely be indistinguishable from their last latest yearly revision.
    • +4

Better to have more storage than you think you might need than not enough.

      • +1

Absolutely. But I mean, say this is 128gb and 200 bones, I'd take a 32gb version for 150 bones any day. When the price is the same, you're an idiot to not take more, but if I could get less of something I don't need and save money, that's where I'm at.

  • is this unlocked?

    • +3

      Yes.

      • +1

Thanks, tempted to get this for my mum

But I have already spent $859 for a laptop and $470 for 2 Dell screens this month so I'm quite poor :(

        • +22

No, you are a laptop and 2 Dell screens richer.

    • +2

Yes - locked on your location and reported back to CCP.

      • +2

Yes - then 'relayed' to CIA.

  • Nfc?

    • Sadly australia didn't get NFC…

      • +1

Sad :( I had a hard time finding a cheaper phone with both dual sim and nfc. Huawei usually does dual sims but not nfc, cheap samsungs usually do nfc but not dual sim. Ended up with an oppo A52.

        • +1

I feel for you… I ended up giving up on NFC. I couldn't deal with the Oppo UI as it was too intrusive. I really wanted a micro sd card slot and dual sim and back then this really ticked it all.

        • my oppo a9 2020 has nfc and dual sim. i paid $307 for it on ebay and it worked nice until about 2 months into it and it got an update and then it was laggy and crap.

    • +2

If you want NFC, Redmi Note 8T is at a good price @ Koagn with 5% off (also $20 off with AMEX).

  • Nice…

    Google store and android update?

    • +4

Yes am on June Security update and Android 10.0

  • Does the pop up camera always have to be used?

    • +3

The pop-up is for front, so it is used only for video chat or if you use face unlock (it does make a cool sound that is controllable when opening).
The rear cameras are on the back.

  • OOS for delivery now.

  • Can you wifi call on this?

    • +1

I have not been able to do so on Boost (having said that I know a friend with Samsung S20 and she cannot VoWiFi or VoLTE on Boost either)…

      • thank you for your reply…

      • I am with boost and using a s20 ultra and wificalling and volte works just fine for me.

  • +2

Anyone else able to check store stock? Mine doesn't show any stores.

  • Damn was gonna pull the trigger but cant find stock anywhere :(

  • any rom support? i dont like their ui

    • +1

Huawei has had locked bootloader since end of 2018 with no easy ways to unlock.

  • Hows google maps with this?

    • +3

I get insane battery life when using as GPS, Google maps and Here work flawlessly.

  • +2

    Plastic back (won't shatter)

Agreed, never understood why you'd want a glass back.

    • Looks premium

      • +2

and feels slippery like a soap 😃

        • +2

they share same message - don't drop the soap

    • They look great but you end up having to cover them with a case anyway..

    • The glass back meme was Apple at first, but eventually caught more as wireless charging is more efficient that way.

  • +1

Does google play work on this phone?

    • +3

      yes. Pre ban.

  • Not as good as SD710, no normal SD card slot? No IR Blaster?

    • +3

It has micro SD card slot (not the nano memory that Huawei uses on flagships).
      No IR blaster on it.
The CPU performance is a tad bit below SD710 but not by a big margin IIRC.

  • Is it better than oppo a52?

  • -5

great price but not for power user though. But none tech user maybe benefit from second hand old iPhone a bit more due to its ease of use. So can't decide who is the target audience.

    • +1

Where can you buy a 2nd hand iPhone for $200 that's comparable to this?

  • SHOP M03, DUBBO NSW 2830

  • Unavailable in Sydney and beyond

  • none <200km of nanango qld. will wait for another good offer like this for a non-tech user.

  • Will officeworks price match?

  • +1

Good Guys matched the price. Give them a call.

  • they don't price match with different colours

    • My store was happy for me to pick the colour.

      • She said no when I said I wanted black because it doesn’t match the model number, etc but when the invoice was sent I saw black and I was happy with that… what do you think of the emerald green colour ? https://alifaraz.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Huawei-Y9-Pr… 🍀

        • Looks ok, but only blue and black are available.

          • @playbargain: Mine comes with Android 9.0 (Pie) out of the box which is upgradable to Android 10, Magic UI 2.1.. have you updated ?

            • +1

@Alp3r: Yes. Took awhile for the update to show up, glad the phone got the update. It's cracker of a phone for $199.
