  • Is it better than oppo a52?

    • I have the a52. Picked it for having nfc and dual sim. Depends on whether nfc is important to you? A52 also has a bigger battery (5000mah)

      • I have a52 as well, great phone for the price.
        Just wanted to compare.

    • A52 is using Snapdragon 665, which is better than Kirin 710F. About 5-10% faster in overall scores.

  • Interested to know how it compares to the A52 too

    • A52 is better in performance, camera and almost every thing. But, it has a hole in screen.

      • has the a52 been 199? I missed that ..

  • Is it better than Samsung a20? I got it from Amazon for $179 unlocked, but deadly slow.

    • Y9 is using Kirin 710f vs Samsung A20 using Exynos 7884. 710f is made of 12nm , and 7884 is 14nm. The performance is similar, but the heat and power assumption of Kirin will be better.

    • Looks significantly faster to me.

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_tLdkQa_RkM

Also has a much higher resolution screen.

    • a20 has issues with GPS. almost 2 years old model and Samsung still doesn't fix the issue

I see Huawei prices going down like crazy. $199 for a 128GB phone is the cheapest deal I've seen so far. Has Huawei been largely affected by the Google Ban, and so are trying to stay relevant with these Pre-Ban phones?

By the way Huawei Y5 has been taken off Aus Post's website. It was available for $159 for the past few days.

    • Not just Google ban, if you follow the news

      • Yup, agree. But that has an impact on Phone Handsets as well? 5G equipment, I know.

        • +2

The major blow was the US sanction on chipmakers. They aren't allowed to sell Huawei new chips and Huawei can't produce themselves

    • If Huawei is going to offer HarmonyOS, for these devices, later on, then Google Ban…meh. Otherwise, sucks balls.

    Matching JB Hifi. https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/huawei-y9-prime-128gb-201…

Edit.. lol as I now see you sort of mentioned … best get second coffee now.

This phone, or the TCL Plex on sale at JB Hifi ($199 vs $299)??

  • +5

Pine Gap is gonna make sure you get deported on a national security bases for being near to this phone.

  • Can anyone recommend a good value phone with a small screen? Ideally no more than 5 inches max.

  • This or the TCL for extra $100? Its for my mum

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/569331

    • Spec wise it's a step above this but does your Mum really need that?
Comments suggest it's very hard to find a case for the TCL, so that might be a deciding factor. Although it comes with a clear case.

As someone who is stuck in the Apple eco system… that is incredible value! A fully working phone for less than 200 bucks, wow.

    • +5

People willingly buying Apple phones wow me too. Buy Apple shares, not the phones.

What's the go with updates on this phone?

    • +1

Android = none. That is why it is going so cheap.

  • Amazon will still take orders but it's "temporarily unavailable". Seems to be an official hwawei store on amazon. If I put an order in, I wonder how long it would take to deliver. Does anyone have any experiences with this sort of thing?

  • Is this phone better than OnePlus 7T pro? I am using Pixel 2 XL at the moment.. Waiting for Pixel 5 and to compare..

It is safe and has a bright future those saying negative things are troll.

Now debating if this runs better than my iPhone 7 Plus.

  • I have a Huawei Nova 3i (Australian bought) which is very similar to this phone, one model lower.

I was very happy with it then it died suddenly after 9 months. The display just stopped. Not dropped. Not water logged. Just stopped mid use for no particular reason.

A repair guy has said this is common with "mid range" Chinese manufactured phones. They said that repairing the phone is not cost effective. I will be trying to find my receipt and taking it back to JB Hifi under warranty.

I've very happy with the specs of the Huaweis and the Oppos but I don't want to pay $300 or more if they're going to die within 1 to 2 years.

Anyone know if Huaweis and Oppos and similar are known for poor reliability, or did I just get unlucky?

    • +5

If it was common we would be getting lots of comments on Ozbargain about it. The repair guy obviously thinks it's common because people don't come to him when their phones are working fine.

Why did you take it to a repair guy when it's still under warranty?

      • +1

I didn't take it to the repair guy, my wife mentioned it to a repair guy she knows. I'm hoping to get it sorted under warranty, just need to find the receipt. I spoke with JB and they said I give it to them, they send it off, you wait 4 weeks or more before they decide what to do should they not be able to fix it. I'm confident that the display just died, so I guess a connection somewhere. I don't know if that's fixable or not.

I was very happy with the phone outside of it dying though. Very much like a Samsung Galaxy 9 but for half the cost at the time.

    • Out of 4 redmi notes we have had 3 still work fine 1 went for a swim which killed it. Oldest is probably 5 years.
