I just want to say as an owner, over all good mid-teir phone but for the price I'd get a Nokia 5.3 for Android one for similar specs, little worse.

    • +3

      Agreed.

I have both in my household, my tcl plex is awesome, fast, syncs with the TV, and the killer feature is a dedicated flashlight (or whatever) button, when the phone is off.

However, despite the 720p screen, my mothers 5.3 is equally as clear unless you pixel peep.

Gets better performance, because its driving an easier display, and has cases available for it.

I had to buy random generic cases off ebay, and stanley-knife my own button holes.

One real praise thouh; bloatware is minimal, and gps is probably the fastest lock ive ever had.

Bought two on last deal when it was $249 for parents but after a while, both unit got significantly slow as if it runs on a Single core…had to reset the phone to make it back to normal…not sure what happened but this happened to both of the phones.

Mine is starting to get noticably slow now too. Seems strange, maybe the latest update had something to do with it.

          • @djsweet: Did you optimise it? With the Optimise widget? Or close apps in memory?

            • @superforever: No, but I rebooted it and it isn't really any better.

              • +1

                @djsweet:

No, but I rebooted it and it isn't really any better

Must be some apps you used that slow it down in the background like antivirus, etc., I have no problem.

You better regularly "CLEAR ALL" press the button that show you all the open apps and CLEAR ALL.

Also use the Optimise widget, default already on the home screen.

Can you see how much memory available in Smart Manager? I have 35%

              • @djsweet: Here's a list of my disabled apps.

      Curious what 'similar specs'?
You get half storage and less RAM.
You get slower SoC (SD665 is basically slight under clocked SD660 to be more enery efficient). SD675 on TCL is faster than SD670 which by itself is faster than both 660 and 665.
You get a HD screen instead of FHD screen.
It's a lot worse tbh. Nokia is too expensive for the price and they are lagging in terms of update nowadays. Samsung and OnePlus are now commit to 3 years update and they occasionally beat even Google in terms of security update due to Google sticking to schedule. It's not strange anymore now that Samsung or OnePlus gets security update a day or two before Pixel phones.

To potential buyers, you don't need another phone. Your current phone works fine.
The best bargain is saying no and choosing not to buy.

          Decent for free though.

@montorola: Was pleasantly surprised when they weren't available and the store rep knocked the price off the phone for me

Got it from last deal, very good phone for the price $249. But the last update have some issue with 5G WiFi.

    • What issue with 5ghz wifi do you have after last update i haven't noticed anything?

      • Connected speed slower and switched over to 2.4 if walk a bit away. Tried difference router the same and no problem before the latest update.

        • I read somewhere that it was Android 10 issue with 5Ghz.

I didn't reset my network settings yet, did Google backup my WiFi password?

  • +2

Vodafone user here - calls won’t go past 14min55sec. Good luck finding anyone to help with the issue 😒 taken away from what was an otherwise a decent mid range device

    • +7

Interesting your blaming the phone and not the provider…

      • +1

I have no call problem with boost.

      • +1

Same sim cards works fine in 6 other phones - just not plex. If was the carrier - would the behaviour not be consistent across multiple devices?

    • I'm with kogan who is a vodafone reseller and don't have any issues with the tcl plex phone.

      • +1

No calls drop out at 14mins55? I wish I had your handsets then

        • No dropouts whatsoever on any provider.

Also been with Telstra (Boost) and Optus (Amaysim) with no issue.

Maybe problem with your particular handset?

Would have suggested reception issue except the consistent 14:55 mins seems strange.

Are you regional or metro have you checked coverage or tried with same sim in another phone?

          Edit:

Sorry just saw your reply re other phones in previous message

          • @prxy: Wowser. We defo lucked out then.

We Metro. Even tried updating sims and still same behaviour.

Yes believe it to be handset related - yet JB don’t think so, not does the TCL authorised repairer. Still engaging with TCL direct about it so will see yet not holding breathe

Shame really as made us not even want to use it now

            • @LV-426: Do you have family/friends with telstra or optus sims to see if problem persists with different carriers?

              • @prxy: Yes and it works fine with Telstra and Optus.

Which made us think it was Voda. Yet when the same sims worked fine in all other devices we were even more confused

    • Does that change if you use a different dialer?

Any difference if you set it to 3g vs 4g?

What troubleshooting have we done, so we can nut out a solution; mine also does not have this issue.

      • • Different dialler? Have not even occurred to me to change? Any recommendations please?

        • 3G to 4G - same result.

        To date-
        • Used 3 Diff Voda sims to same result
        • Same 3 sims worked in: i5s, i6s, i7+, VIVO y17, Oppo Ax5s, HTC10.
        • 2 sims replaced (April & July) same result.
        • 2 new sims all ok in above devices

        • Sent to repairer via JB twice & “could not replicate fault”
        • Third time round - they gave us a Telstra sim to trial as insisted was still Voda issue - even when showed Same sim worked In i6s.
        • Contacted TCL direct - they told me to factory reset. [which had done many times before] so They referred me to authorised repairer - same one JB used.
        • Spoke to repairer directly - explained it all again in detail. Sent it away and they too claim it was fine as they couldn’t replicate it and the device ‘worked fine with all their sims’

Phone has been in box for last month so will boot it up and see if any updates have come through also

        • Any third party apps installed?

          • @superforever: No, nothing installed by us. It’s been nuked that many times back to factory it has been purposeful left as plain as when first opened.

            • @LV-426: Turned off VoWiFi or VoLTE?

            • @LV-426: With vodafone sim in it does it have same 14:55 mins time limit in all/different locations or only for example at home?

Maybe try different dialers as has been suggested many on play store.

        • Uninstall CLEAN MASTER/
CCLEANER or any other antivirus or cleaner apps
          If not try disable lol
system app called "Device Security", I used an app called "Package Disabler Pro" to do so.
You need to restart your device after disabling.

          • @777: He said he reset the phone several times and the phone doesn't have these apps on it by default.

            • @superforever: TCL has its own system device security app and "health app"

    • That sounds like a feature to me 😂

  • Lack of case options, though it comes with one (the buttons on it didn't last long)

    • This is my only issue with this phone too.

      • the buttons on it didn't last long??

        • What he means is the buttons on the case didn't last long. The phone itself is fine but finding cases are hard and the one supplied has a tendency for the button extensions to fall off

    • +6

Yep, not many out there, i only found 3.

I 3d printed a rounded rectangular prism in TPU and used a stanley knife to cut my own button holes.

Cbf'd modeling the actual buttons :p

    • This deal comes with a case?

      • Yes but hard case and with screen protector.

        • Thank you, tempted to buy now

          • @Homr: But you have to press the on/off carefully the on/off button cover on the hard case may drop off.

      TCL Snapdragon processor

      • Is that alot faster than huawei??

      • Having SD processor also means can run a gcam port if u want.

        • Dont know why the neg there is a gcam port for this phone?

  • I love this phone

  • Decent phone but I had so much trouble getting Bluetooth to consistently work, despite several factory resets. And there was an awful MMS issue with Optus when the phone was first released - took them months to fix. Not sure the Bluetooth issue has been resolved.

I recently dropped it and the screen smashed. And then the sim-tray snapped as I was taking my sim card out… can't figure out where to get a new tray.

    • thats a lot of issues for 1 phone :(

    • Wow bluetooth has been one of the strengths of this phone for me especially having it able to connect to so many devices at once.

Thank you OP! My dad's phone has been dying slowly and I was waiting for a deal. Based on reviews, sounds like a very decent phone. Hopefully it arrives before his phone totally dies.

Don't TCL also make cheap crappy tv's or have they improved? I remember a few years ago I was going to buy a TCL tv and everyone said avoid TCL at all cost.

    • TCL probably best budget tv

      • I was going to buy one maybe 3 or 4 years ago and everyone on Whirlpool told me not to because it was worse than Soniq. It must have improved…

        • hisense ?

        • yeh, HTC was probably still around back then…

    • Have a TCL 38 inch non smart TV. Died suddenly close to 3 year warranty. Someone came to check then replaced the motherboard. Still using it 3 years later.

This phone is fast and heaps of RAM. I use it to play games and it is great. For those considering it, this is one of the best phone you can get at this price.

  • bought it on last deal and used it for 2 months. then i changed it to iphone, main reason was i couldnt root tcl plex. now i am using a jailbroken iphone and i wouldnt change it to anything else

FYI, TCL is a China state owned enterprise. Aka buying from TCL means you're literally giving money to the CCP. Food for thought 🙂

  • Not bad but $249 with headphones was a much better deal :)
Using mine mainly for playing games and watching movies.
Comes with a slim see through hard case and a screen protector, found few more cases on Aliexpress.

  • How does this phone compare to Xiaomi Poco X3? Is this phone come with dual sim?
    '

  • I purchased this phone during the last sale, coming from a pixel 2xl I was quite impressed with the UI and screen upgrade (IMHO), battery life is amazing but the camera is terrible and for this reason alone I'm considering going back to my 2xl. CSB lol
