Can vouch for excellent soundstage and comfort, brilliant headphones for a killer price!

The price of headphones has become a joke.
Commercial radio stations and recording studios have been using AKG K141 for over 30 years. Even the upgraded model is less than $200.

These aren't expensive, and that's a very random benchmark you've picked.

"The price of headphones has become a joke"

it's not like you're forced to buy these headphones…

Also I don't know a single person working in radio that uses the K141.

I did for over 20 years and still do in my studio.

95% of people buy big headphones purely as a fashion statement for public transport or walking past the acai bowl shop.

        • +7

You must not get out very much because apple airpods are the go to fashion statement these days.

        • Nobody is buying open back headphones for public transport.

That's like arguing the price of cars has become a joke, just because a BMW is more expensive than a Hyundai.

If you want $9.95 ear buds, you can always get them. If you want $10,000 cans, you can get them too. Different products for different consumers and different purposes.

Yep, it's pretty wanky above the $200-300 mark if you ask me. Audiophile attitudes are more pervasive as we become richer over time I guess.

There's an argument to be made up to $500 when dealing with planars, but otherwise it's not worth your time unless you have the spare income to invest and you're interested in newer driver technologies in the headphone space.

AMT and ribbons drivers are coming into the mix, with the HEDDPhone apparently being great value for what they are, though not at Aussie retail pricings.

I bought these for $641 from Amazon UK a couple of weeks ago, which I'd consider a great price itself, so this price is even better.

Amazing headphones, especially with the analytical pads included.

    I don't need these.

If you're not after an analytical headphone or desperate for the extra sub-bass, you're better off with the Sundara for $50 less (probably more so on Prime Day with cashbacks).

These Beyers (like the DT770 and DT990 before them, in particular) have some treble peaks designed to reveal issues in a mix, which can regularly become harsh when used as a musical/gaming headphone.

Yes this is what I have read also, the DT1990 Pro's are made for professionals and should be used for professional purposes.
The general consensus for DT1990 Pro is it is more a tool than a headphone made for enjoyment, and I think that reflects in its price.

    • +1 on the Sundara :)

  • i have the previous model (990's)

Is this a successor to the 990 or a different class? The price suggests the latter.

I have a 990 32 ohm. My head is too big for it. At maximum band extension it doesn't fit me. Is this any better?

    • Its a different class of driver - higher efficiency "Tesla" tech like in the T1, T5, DT1770.

As far as size, its the same as the 990, same headband shape, pads, etc.

The BeyerDynamic DT 1990 will make poorly mastered music sound disappointing and well mastered music sound amazing, it plays it how it is. They are a very analytical headphone. They are good value IMO. They have good clarity, definition, and sound stage, and very good clear sub bass & bass for that price point. I would say they are fairly neutral from what I can gather.

I've also had the AKG K712 they just seemed a little too wide of a sound stage, and not well defined especially in bass or sub bass area and harsh sounding mid to highs with peaks. I would say that the k712s are not really better than my 20 year old Sennheiser HD250 linear II, and performed worse in bass clarity and definition, while being better in sound stage than the HD250 IMO.

Unfortunately I had to send my DT 1990s back due to a faulty cable. But I've already put in an order for them again and I'm looking forward to then arriving.

I might order the Dekoni Elite Velour when the DT1990s arrive to address the slight treble peak, which is meant to bring them closer to the Sennheiser HD800s, from what is shown in the graphs from diyaudioheaven. However, I was pretty satisfied with the sock pads and I didn't find the peak that noticeable and could easily live with it.
