      Always next time!

  • This or the WD Ultrastar ?

    https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B07H4PR6HN/ref=ppx_yo_d…

I am going to avoid WD Reds as one just failed and I have another 3 now giving me anxiety :) They were 6 tb so I will slowly replace them with 8Tb but Segate or Ultrastar.

      WD Ultrastar is better.

      • Cheaper too from US :)

        In Aus its > $400

I may be mistaken but If i recall correctly that drive runs a bit hotter and noisier under load but they are otherwise good drives. I was going to get one before i saw this, since i've already got ironwolfs in may as well complete it.

        • I wonder if you can mix and match. I replaced my failed red with a Ironwolf 8tb as that was the quickest one I could get but also ordered the Ultrastar from Amazon.

      • +1

        Considerably louder though.

    • +4

The Ultrastar just like Seagate's Exos line of Enterprise disks tend to run louder and hotter. They are built for use in datacentres where these issues are not a factor. If the noise is not an problem and you have an appropriate temperature controlled environment, then it would be a good alternative.

We're in the process of replacing a bunch of 6TB HGST Ultrastars with 16TB Exos drives, the Ultrastars run about 15°C hotter and they're noisier. The Exos drives idle around 40° and will max out at around 60° (haven't seen a single one break 60° despite running them with sustained writes for 48 hours apiece without airflow), but in a high airflow enclosure they don't really get hotter than 50°. The Ultrastars idle between 50 and 55° and will happily crack 70°. I was worried about those numbers when I first saw them but was assured that is normal for those. Frankly I'll be happy once they've all been retired.

    • I believe the ultrastar lineup available on Amazon are some sort of greymarket resale thing where you get no manufacturer warranty so if your drive fails no replacement is available.

      • You can check your Ultrastar warranty here: https://support-en.wd.com/app/warrantystatus

If you're concerned about the ebay seller, you can ask them for a serial no before purchase. If they won't give it to you, tell them you're going to check it as soon as you receive it - if WD won't honour the warranty, you'll send it back for a refund. If they agree you're protected by Paypal buyer protection for the first couple of months while you work it out.

        • Not concerned about the eBay auction as Ironwolf are consumer drives and Seagate will honor the warranty.

On the Amazon WD Ultrastar click on to reviews and then filter it for 1 star only reviews

          No 5yr WD retail warranty
I contacted WD to register 2 of these drives that I bought. WD confirmed that they are OEM drives. Platinum Micro may warranty these drives themselves but I wouldn't count on it. If you are good with OEM drives, go for it.

OEM Non-Warrantied Drive Do Not Buy
This is an illegal practice. If its OEM it must be advertised as OEM - Non-Warrantied. Its false labeling. Every time I buy a hard drive from Amazon lately. My Seller was server part deals.

Buy if you want, but A) doesnt match the picture- it has the plain white no brand label, and B) it has no warranty.

OEM drives - Not warrantied by Western Digital.
Bought 4 of these drives and immediately registered then with Western Digital who confirmed they are OEM drives and there is no warranty for them through Western Digital. All my drives will be returned. BUYER BEWARE!

i need one hard drive in my PC. Is this drive loud? I know most mechanic are loud duuh bc they have disks but is it louder than usual? Anyone know other good mechanical drives?

    • -4

You will need 2, as one for backup

    • -4

If this is just for your PC it is overkill.

      • Completely puzzled as to why?……..no, it's not my neg.

        • -2

          must be some retards around

          • @Logical: I guess only he knows whether he needs backup or not. It sounds like not.

      • I Downloaded 1tb of goodies in 1 week since i got nbn 100. Yeah 8tb aint gonna last.

    • This drive is not loud, no. Perfectly fine for a desktop PC.

    • I own 3, they can get loud when writing to disk, yes. If you want I can record my NAS so you can hear it first hand.

    • Depending on your use its not overkill, and not too loud (comparatively, i have louder, you will hear it when under load though so can be annoying). You can use any drive just make sure you are comfortable with the warranty period especially. I personally won't touch drives unless they have a minimum 3yr warranty, it's just not worth the gamble.

  • Brings the 10TB ones to $403.75, damm tempting

    • +2

The 10tb was $383.97 a couple weeks back on Amazon.

  • Thanks OP. Finaly under $300 so immediate deduction for next year ;-)

    • +6

Your invoice will be for $345 though.

      • No, the invoice shows the discount and total cost of AU $293.25

        • If you're talking about the ebay invoice then sure, but the tax invoice from the shop (Futu) will show $345 with a GST component of $31.36.

  • Urgh.. PLUS

  • Any ebay plus memberships deals
    around?

  • +2

I've have this in my NAS now, running 4x 8TB Ironwolf's.
I was going to get the WD Reds, but they sold out as i putting it in my cart. These run a little louder than the red, but mine haven't skipped a beat. No issues other than the noise, but then again for something to run 24/7, the hum and seeking sound is going to be present no matter what, you'll get used to it.

    • +1

I ended up getting a long ethernet cable and running it behind my couch and putting the NAS down at the other end of the room. Don't have to put up with the sound anymore.

  • This item is out of stock.

  • There is 1 left here.

  • Completely out of stock now :(
