I am an uni student but also work as a tutor for a uni course, am I eligible for this?

    • +1

No, check the terms and conditions. You will need to be a member of the teachers organisation in your state with registration/employee number.

    • -5

yes, it says Casual Teacher and as long as you have the Staff ID and Reference number. it also stated Classroom technician, which literally can be IT guys.

    • +2

Doesn't appear to mention uni teachers/tutors. So I would say no

  • Just a pity it doesn't apply to other staff inside the schools. I work as IT Tech in a few schools. Would have been nice to get recognized also but glad Teachers are at least.

    • +5

Let's be honest, 21k tickets for all teachers world wide. Got a better chance at scoring an eBay Plus deal that hasn't been price jacked.

      • That's try. Just nice to be recognized somewhere ;) Even if just a thanks in writing by some airline

      • Great comparison!

      • Scored tickets when they offered it for Healthcare workers last time.

        Believe in your chances!

      • +2

I think this is way better odds than Ebay plus

  • So how does it work? They are giving out the promo code at 12pm?

  • What about university lecturers?

    • They chose to call themselves lecturers not university teachers, so tough sh*t.

      /s

  • +1

Should this be labeled as TARGETED?

    • No because it is not only available by unique code delivered only to you. Competition maybe.

  • Why bother with this? International travel won't return for a long time.

    • +2

Because it will return in 2021

      • -1

Speculation. It's stupid to book any trip based on the assumption that it will return by a specific date.

        • +2

They’ll extend booking and flight periods as they did for the healthcare worker offer.

        • i'd still book any trip which is FREE and dates can be changed

    • +1

Qatar will honour the flight regardless of country flight restrictions and extend the offer as they did for the offer for healthcare workers.

  • +1

It's annoying that you need to book by the 1st of November but cool initiative.

  • Pity the ticket can't be for 2022

    • May not be any different to 2020.

  • +17

When I saw this I thought this was a really nice thing for teachers who often get overlooked, I didn't think oh, what about me, why didn't my profession get this deal !!!!!. What is wrong with all these ppl here, can't you just be happy for others sometimes?

    • EXACTLY, shouldn't everyone be doing something productive on their day off (me included) instead of having a go at teachers?

  • Would be great if the complimentary ticket seat is upgradable with points?!

  • -5

I think front line and teachers did/do a great job during covid. They did retained a paycheck though - some with covid bonus rates (NDIS had a +5% covid rate until July when they moved officially into a 'post covid' phase - lol). How about free tickets for the small business owners whose lives and financial status have been screwed up by covid. Don't know how you would vet the claims though. I can think of many hurting small business owners who could do with a break. COVID has wiped 2 financial years for these people. Teachers and front line staff can get a mortgage, affected small business owners will be set back at least 4 years to have 2 years of 'good' financials to show the bank to get their own home. I'm not saying teachers and front line staff don't deserve recognition, just they don't seem the most hurt in this scenario.

    • +3

I think because there's a perceived risk in business and the government have been giving out grants along with jobkeeper. Imagine if the stock market had stayed low, would investors deserve a break too?

      • -2

Stock market does vary everyday -that is an expected risk. Covid is unusual. If you say covid is a risk of being in business, then covid is a risk of being front line staff / teachers. I'm not saying they dont deserve anything, just seems oddly placed good will to give thousands of free airfares to those least fiscally impacted. By the way, my G.P's new bmw looks great. Jobkeeper totaled to date equals loss of business for just the first month of covid for one of my businesses. I have 2 businesses, so luckily the other has kept us afloat but I know many others who are not so fortunate and they are really hurting. I think they could do with the airfares, that's all.

To be honest, if you're a business owner having free flights will probably just cost you more money with accommodation and food which should probably be put back into the business. I'm not really surprised by the pandemic; we were due for one anyways if you look throughout history as weird as that may sound. Like I said, businesses have gotten grants from the government while teachers haven't, just convert those grants to flights and there you go.

          • @[Deactivated]: Still a teacher gets $9K a month while a family on JobKeeper get $3K (Partnerships only get 1 payment). But you are right, no money to do anything when you get there. I could invest as much money as I want into my business, 1 phone call in 6 months isn't going to change regardless of how money I invest though. Govt shut us, and all the other entertainers I know down. At least I had not invested in any large projects like many of my colleagues did. Some get some funds back with assistance, some get none. I just hope the free flights help stimulate the global economy when the restriction are over.

            • +2

@ShipShapeRC: 40% tax 10yr teachers earn $5.6k net. Is that a lot for a family? Not really. Hmmm hrs p/w.. lets see, gets to work 7.45am and leaves around 5 most days. Break times usually have yard duties or some co-curricular. Eat on the go. After school co curricular at least once a week and saturday sports. On top of that, probably an additional 10-15hr each week working at night for planning as they barely give teachers any Non contact time.

Assessments and reporting twice a year is the busiest period, expect to work till midnight most nights for 2-3 weeks inc most weekends.

But still extremely grateful to have a job which he loves doing. It's all about the students. It's intrinsically a very rewarding job. Making a positive difference in any way possible.

Personally, I could never be a classroom teacher. They're amazing.

    • +1

why don't you send this statement/question to Qatar Airways? I'm sure they will get back to you ASAP.

  • Allocation open but is already exhausted or does it refresh at 12? My passport is expired so I can't even enter the correct date on it. Lol.

  • +8

"Thank you for submitting your details. We will send you an email within 48 hours once your request has been processed."

Did anyone else get that on submission?

    • no, I got that it's finished already for today. Maybe you got in!

    • Nah missed out after about 1 minute.

      • Wrong. Missed it after 5seconds.

    • +1

Nope, but I'm glad to know somebody actually did! Will have to try again tomorrow.

    • +1

      🤚🤞

    • +1

      Brilliant great work

    • +1

act the victim and you will be the victim.

  • +7

Did they allocate Australian 20 out of the 21000.
    Gone in 5 seconds

  • Anyone get it? It was gone instantly

    • +2

Yeah, looks like itsfree and myself were successful.

We will have to see if we actually get a confirmation email though.

      • No confirmation email yet – what about you?

        • +2

Thank you for submitting your details. We will send you an email within 48 hours once your request has been processed.

Thanks OP! My mum will be ecstatic. She has been dying for a holiday for years now.

    • +1

She will still have to pay for the rest of the holiday…..flights might be the cheapest thing next year lol!

    • +1

      Congrats.

  • The daily promo code limit for your country has already been reached. The allocation is refreshed daily at 4 a.m. Qatar time (GMT+3) until 7 October 2020.

  • +1

missed it too. Not sure what the daily allocation is for Aus. Can't be much

  • Didn't work for me, all allocated - is there a way to autofill the form for tomorrow?

    • +1

I had everything ready to go and clicked the 'I'm not a a robot thing just before 12'. As it ticked over, pressed submit and I think i may have been very lucky.

      • +1

May I kindly ask how did you pre fill the form if it wasn’t available until exactly at 12?

        • +3

As I've said in other posts, I just clicked the link and the form was already able to be filled in, and it still works now. I'm using Chrome if that helps.

  • 12:00pm open….12.03 all gone…

    • I got mine in before 12:01 and it was already gone haha

  • wow! that went quick

  • So, the question is…did anyone get lucky enough and get a code?

  • +4

Long time browser, and have snagged plenty of deals thanks to OB. Pretty sure I got this deal too, pre filled the form and pressed submit right on 12. It's going to be a long 48 hours waiting for the code.

OP, if I get this and if you're in Melbourne, I owe you a drink of your choice!

    • How did you pre fill the form if there was no form showing before the 12pm?

    • +2

Nice one.👌 May I ask how you got to pre fill the form before 12? For me the form kicked in exactly at 12 so was only able to fill in the form at that time.

      • +2

I just clicked the link and the form was already able to be filled in, and it still works now. I'm using Chrome if that helps.

        • Did you submit the form instantaneously after filling it out?
Or did you wait til the 12?

    • +1

That'll be a tot of Macallan Fine and Rare then, if you please.

    • +2

I'm also curious how you had it all pre-filled when it didn't appear until 12pm and didn't know what the questions would be. I was rushing around finding my passport number, expiry etc haha. Could you possibly please msg me with some help? Would be much appreciated for tomorrow!

      • Actually, I refreshed at 11:58am and it was showing a form. Maybe the mistake was not submitting it on 12…might have submitted it before, showing allocation was already done before it refreshed..

      • +2

Hahahaha sounds like me…running around the house like a headless chicken to find the passport hahahaha

      • +1

As I said above, I just clicked the link and the form was already able to be filled in, and it still works now. I'm using Chrome if that helps. I have a screenshot of the questions but can't insert the image here.

        • +1

Thank you. I’m keeping today’s form open for tomorrow, maybe with some luck I will be able to get through.

          • +1

@Pika79: I think everyone is going to be doing that.

            Chances have gone even slimmer!

    • Did you get the email yet? Starting to get worried…

  • Damn I was waiting til 12 but it's Queensland!
Missed out on today but looks like registration refreshes every day at 4AM Qatar time, so set your clocks tomorrow!

  • And let that be a lesson to you all.

    • +6

Obviously you don't understand that we also have to plan and do all the marking as well as other admin related duties. If you think it is so easy, why don't you become a teacher?

      • -6

I should but the pay is too low, sorry.

Well i dont see any of the "markings" or "feedbacks" happening in any of my kids classes and aren't you suppose to do the planning during your school holidays?

        • +5

As a teacher myself, I have been providing feedback to my students and parents. Have you contacted the school and teachers about not getting any feedback? Or are you one of those parents who are pissed that their babysitting service is not available and actually have to look after your own kids?

          • @lunartemis: Yes, they provide feedback - twice a year but day to day during this lockdown, from my observation is easy peasy. 45 mins conference call with all the students and they're done for the day. Upload some activity sheets for the kids to Compass and have the rest of the day off.

            • @mrvaluepack: If you're still thinking you want more feedback or support, then speak to the teacher/school about it, instead of complaining here? Doctors are not just about writing scripts, pharmacists are not about sticking a label on a box, police officers are not just about patrolling streets, and teachers are not just the contact hours that you think you see.

    • 45 mins? the whole day? what are you smoking

    • +5

I'm on video for up to 4 hours a day.

and I'm sure I'm not the only one who would say it's SO much easier to teach in the classroom.

Edit - that 4 hours is time online, with students. I am probably sitting staring at my laptop for over 7-8 hours on a school day. The only benefit is being able to sleep in a bit more with no commute.

      • +1

Can't agree more. Term 3 was probably the hardest 10 weeks I had to go through in my 17 years of my teaching career.

    • +4

Your opinion on the matter is only valid if:

      • you are or were once a teacher
      • live with a teacher
      • are dating a teacher
        and/or
      • are close friends with a teacher

Similar with any other profession, unless you have insider knowledge of what happens in the business, you have no right to determine whether a job is easy or not.

If teaching was an easy job, 30-50% of new teachers in Australia would not drop out within the first 5 years of teaching.

      • Geez i must have hit a nerve. If you read my original post, i never said a teachers job was easy. I mentioned that based on my observation during the current lockdown state in Melbourne, interaction between students and teachers are just limited to 45 minutes per day which looks like an easy job to me.

If all i had to do was a meeting or conference call for 45 minutes a day, i would be lmao and rolling in the dough.

        • +2

My mother is a secondary school teacher and has spent more time working after-hours during remote teaching than when she was on-campus – and teaching roles were already notorious for the additional after-hours required.

The interactive classes certainly don't reflect the behind-the-scenes work and preparation that is required, not to mention the training involved for remote teaching. Nor does it encompass the non-interactive classes, where the teacher is still present on Microsoft Teams while the class completes SACs or homework. That's not to mention all the other tasks such as report-writing, assessments, parent-teacher interactions and meetings…

When you calculate the number of hours required and divide it by the salary, it is plain to see that teaching is not a career you enter to "roll in the dough" – remote teaching or not.

        • +2

Just annoyed with hearing the same comments being made about the 'ease of online teaching'.

I agree, if all I had to do was a 45 minute call a day, I would also be laughing.

I guess it should be considered flattery, if people are under the assumption that being able to engage & educate a group of 20-30 teenagers online happens on the fly with no preparation.

  • +1

Such a shame non-school based teachers aren’t recognised

  • Daily allocation reached for Aus… gutted.

  • -3

As if only the teachers deserve a well-needed break in these times….
