Good afternoon all,
Was browsing to see if I can replace my Alienware 17 R2 and came across this.

I feel RAM would need an immediate upgrade but GTX1660Ti for the price seemed reasonable?

28 in stock at the time of posting.

PSA: Don't forget to check your favorite cashback site. apparently no cashback for outlet purchases , thanks FireRunner
PSA#2: Now laptops depreciate over 2 yrs not 3 if you're interested in tax deduction.

      thank you will remove.

  • Is dell refurbs usually still in good shape? And how much to upgrade ram for this model? And is it hard to diy

    • They're usually in good condition from experience. Some minor scratch or scuffs to the body
16GB is optimal and it's very easy to replace. Open the back cover and just swap them out

    • I got my refurbished Alienware from them.
Had silly human issues initially but the warranty support was great (technician came to work twice).

      • what warranty did you have for technical to come and work on it

        • "silly human issue"
The factory had installed OS on the HDD when the laptop came with SSD and HDD..

          • @assarabbiya: I had this once too from a Dell Outlet purchase. I just installed a fresh copy of Windows 10 to the SSD instead of getting a technician though

            • @FireRunner: I ended up getting a Win10 on USB from the tech :D
I guess I could've bothered myself to reinstall - just felt lazy and had some expectation for Alienware warranty support.

    • May need to chat to Dell upgrade cost / availability.

      Warranty options are:

1Yr Ltd Hardware Warranty, InHome Service after Remote Diagnosis Included in price
1Yr Premium Support Plus: Next Business Day Onsite Service including Accidental Damage Support +$190.62
3Yr Ltd Hardware Warranty, InHome Service after Remote Diagnosis +$116.49
3Yr Premium Support: Next Business Day Onsite Service +$264.75
3Yr Premium Support Plus: Next Business Day Onsite Service including Accidental Damage Support +$635.40

Yes dells refurbs are worth the savings and it's not hard to DIY. They also come with standard 1 yr warranty just like new laptops

most dell laptops have youtube videos to teach you how to dissemble and upgrade

heres the one for this laptop

  • Refurb Alienware m15 R2 with 9th gen i7, 1TB SSD, RTX2060, 16GB RAM, 240Hz display seems pretty good for $1959. 18 in stock when last checked
Or RTX2070 MaxQ version for $2049 6 in stock

    • Do you think it's worth $2049 for i7 9th gen?

  • I'm guessing a refurb is essentially a second hand machine made to look nice?

    • It could range from someone returning their laptop because they decided they didn't want it or a machine that broke down and was repaired with new components

    • I've bought a couple of monitors and couldn't tell they'd even been opened, I'd have no issues buy from their outlet again.

  • ~$300 more for Ryzen 7 4800, 16GB RAM and RX 5600m

I could keep going with it and end up with another Alienware :D

Screen is pretty crappy on that one. 250nit 120Hz VA instead of the 300nit 144Hz IPS panel
GPU is more or less the same in terms of performance. CPU in undoubtably better though and condition is "As new" instead of refurb.
I'd say not worth it for $300 more

Edit: And they go for around $1500 brand new during eBay 20% off sales

As an owner of one with a 4800h and 144hz screen. If you were to buy this, just make sure the BIOS and drivers are up to date. Dell technially launched this device with a beta BIOS which did not use the Smarshift feature correctly and increased the wattage going through the CPU, causing it to heat up pretty quickly. There has been a fix since September, which did not evolve disabling turbo.

Weight is 2.8kg if anyone wants to know

  • Does this one in the OP have a blank 2.5" slot?

    Pity it's RAM is 2x4GB.

  • Does anyone know if Dell has any upcoming sales sooner than black friday next month? I'm after the new XPS 13 11th gen and other than stacking AUAFFILIATES15%OFF and QUT5 I'm wondering if there might be a sale just around the corner? I should have pulled the trigger when the SUPER7 code stacked but hesitated and now it's about $80 more expensive…
