Free $2 Prepaid SIM

Seems to be back without an expiry date this time, was unable to find it in the Optus online shop but from an old link seems to still be there and on sale as an Online exclusive.

Optus $2 SIM free, and free delivery.
Order online. No credit card needed.

Perfect for your port in and port out needs, I had used one recently for a Boost Mobile port in port out.

Note regarding the $10 Minimum Recharge your are able activate the SIM and port in your number for free via there live chat function with no recharge required, i have previously done this and it was very simple and allowed me to port in and out for a Boost Mobile new customer promo.

  • Does the $2 Sim give you $2 credit or do you have to recharge?

    • From the first line of the Optus page linked:
"Recharge required to activate SIM at a minimum cost of $10."

    • Free single SIM nothing else

Cant check out. Blank page (with Chrome)

    • Same issue. Opened it in incognito tab which then worked. Not sure if coincidence or it actually did something.

I had to turn off ad blocker. It works now.

It's just a free SIM card ppl no credit

    • Plenty of street credit to have the Optus name on your phone though

Working in the past, no more. Tried this Just 2 days ago.
The chat agent said due to people abusing now we can't activate through chat.
    You need to call.

But yeah, calling and fine they will activate without any top-up. Im not sure if porting is possible this way, as I chose new number.

Do yourself a favour and stay away from Optus please.

    • -2

Why? I've been with them since 97' & never had an issue that no one else hasn't experienced with another teleco over the years.

      • -1

If you ever contacted Optus customer service, you should know what I meant.

    • +1

Why "please"? People will go with whichever provider they want.
I've been on the Optus network for a couple of years now, directly with Optus for the first 12 months and now via Catch Connect. I pay $10/month for 10GB with umlimited calls/SMS. No way in the world am I changing, I pay next to nothing, get all the data I require and coverage everywhere I need it.
As for service, I couldn't care less about customer service with any of them, once I'm connected I have no need to call them, which is particularly true on pre-paid.

You can activate these through self service without a recharge. When activating select any recharge and continue. When it asks for your cc details use

    4242 4242 4242 4242
    10/25 exp, 111 CVV

Try submitting 3 times on the third attempt it will fail and skip the recharge step and you can continue the activation without recharging.

How long can you stay active(not disconnected) without recharge? I bet no one wants to risk/abuse his main numbers like this.

      • +3

Even when the account is closed the number is quarantined for 6 months so you can get it back

        • Really? My experience with the one week sim that were often sold less than half price at coles in the past, the number got disconnected pretty fast once nit recharged.

      • true, best try with dummy number.

      • +1

The number will be disconnected after 6 months with no recharge, then you have another 6 months where the number will be in quarantine, meaning Optus staff can retrieve the number for you on to a new service. After that the number is put back into the pool of available numbers for new services

      Interesting.

If I activated a new number, then would it be properly activated (able to receive texts & calls) ?

    • Would this workaround work for Vodafone $2 sim?

    • Will this work with vodafone $2 starter sim too?

    • tried activating through$1 flex, keeps saying "a system error has occured, please try again at a later time"

then said screw it and entered correct card details and still didnt work :/

Edit: Worked online (desktop), not through app.

      • Haven't tried using flex, try using one of the other plans

    • Thanks mate, worked!

    • By self service, do you mean the app?

    • activated without any failed attempts at all…

      feels a bit unreal

  • how long can this sim last before it is deactivated?

  • Free. Good.

  • Could this sim receive a text without recharging? Looking to refer myself a new DoorDash account, but I need a fresh number.

    • Good question.

I'm pretty sure you can and that gives me an idea for ubereats ….

Telstra $2 sims don't need to be activated to receive sms

      • don't you mean 'recharged' (with $ )

        • You can put sim in your phone then get confirmation codes such as Uber sent to it without having to activate the sim in your name

          • @psylence: seriously??
I thought they don't come active when you buy them.
Did you test this? sorry to keep asking, but seems unreal :)
            Thank you!

            • @cheapminchia: i want to know as well.. and then from receiving the first sms/code, how many months it can last like that wihout recharging/activating?

            • @cheapminchia: Yes just put sim in your phone type #150# to get your phone number and can receive sms without activation

              Telstra not sure about others

  • I always thought these were "free" since retailers get them for free for the most part.

  • Does optus offer free 5g access to prepaid users like Vodafone does?

  • Now, it is free, $0.

  • I'm currently with tpg, if I port out to optus with this free sim and then port back to TPG on the same day will I be eligible for their 6 month cheaper registration fee?

Curious as I've never done this before, and help would be appreciated !

  • Awesome. Thanks OP.

  • Does anyone know if optus sends a reminder text when the number is about to expire?
