Thanks OP! Just ordered the Asus mobo and shipping was free?

    • +1

Yep, updated post. May have just been the MSI that needed fixing (still does).

      • what does the "-A" mean

        • The only quote I could find -
"ASUS’s cheapest B550 board is the B550M-K, which is almost identical to the B550M-A, with just fewer parts. The biggest visual difference is that the B550M-K does not come with a power delivery heatsink, with a simple 4+2 power delivery design."

Is the Gigabyte X570 GAMING X any good?

    • +3

Probably not for Ryzen 9, should be OK for Ryzen 5 and 7
It looks nice but doesn't have enough USB ports on the back (specially USB-C)

  • Is it just free shipping for these motherboards or where can I find out about the promo? I can never find any information about them, even the last one where it was CPU+MB offer

    • Put a cpu and mb in your cart, go to checkout and the discount is already applied.

      • Don't want to buy a CPU since I am waiting for the 5800x, but $339 for the x570 Tomahawk delivered is a good price

After the recent finding against MSI trying to cover up their scalping operation, alongside terrible software for their products, I'll be looking elsewhere before sending my money their way again.

As a product, they can be great and for 99% of users they probably won't have any issues but then 99% of other products will also do the same for similar money without the smoke and mirrors. On top of their business ethics, they don't deserve my business again (yet).

    • +4

who wouldn't try and hide that you sold a few GPU's for way overprice… its not like they profited from this, we are talking a few $1000 in card gains and many many many more damages to the brand.

The WAN show goes into a bit more detail on this and gives a bit more of an open-minded look.

yeah i agree its (profanity) all..

        • Pretty funny how they've pulled any and all listings they've ever had.

          Shady business practices.

      • Exactly, so why give a half arsed response if they've got nothing to hide? It definitely seems like there's more to it.

It's like anything, it's all good until you get caught. Their response is pretty average to say the least, definitely comes across as they couldn't give 2 shits about what anyone (consumer) thinks.

That's enough for me to take a 2nd think about it before buying any more of their products.

        • +3

I think its an overreaction personally, but you're entitled to your opinion

          • @viralhybrid1987: I agree as I don't think I'm over reacting, just responding to their PSA.

Their net gain would be non existent, so it just makes you wonder why they're so vague with their response. Funny really.

I'm not overly satisfied with their product, so this just gives me another reason to seek out alternatives and I made that pretty clear in my OP.

There's more than enough alternate products without the BS so that's where my money will be going next.

  • The Asus B550 looks like a well sorted mATX board and an excellent price with free delivery.

I would avoid the MSI Tomahawk from personal experience and since googling ‘video issues’.

    • What video issues does it have?

      • Seconded. Had my eye on that board for a while. Interested in video issues if there are some.

        • I have this board. If you're planning to use the bottom pcie ports is go for the steel legend. MSI chose to make it share the pcie lanes with the bottom M2 slot which is puzzling.

        • agree, want a b550 tomahawk, pls let me know!

      • Google MSI Tomahawk EZDEBUG VGA LED. My issue was with the x570 Tomahawk which is prominent in the google search. Many examples of RMA after hours of exhaustive testing. Took me almost 2 days of changing in and out of components before changing motherboard and everything worked perfectly first time. Initial Google searches found little - it wasn’t til I added EZDEBUG into the search that the issues came up.

        • Damn… I was almost 100 % locked on x570 tomahawk… Fark. What board do I get now?

          • +1

            @overlook: B550 steel legend asrock

          • +1

@overlook: This was my son’s build and he chose the Tomahawk. I had previously done a build with the Gigabyte Aorus Elite x570 and found it floorless. When we swapped the Tomahawk out for another Aorus Elite, the rest of the build was easy.

        • Interesting! I do notice my cpu led staying on past boot sometimes.

I had no back panel audio on mine. Was about to rma but a bios downgrade then upgrade fixed it.

        • I have the x570 Tomahawk and it was a breeze to build with. Very happy with it.

  • What's the appeal in paying more for a B chipset compared to an X chipset? I don't get it …

    • For me as a soon-to-be-buyer, most of the B550 boards have more up to date connectivity as they came out near a year later.

There are exceptions to this though (some of the more recent MSI X570 boards).

    • x570 has a chipset fan built into the mobo. Some are very noisy

      • I have the MSI x570 Tomahawk and it has one of these fans on the chipset. So far it stays absolutely silent with normal (4k) gaming and video editing. I got it going once in a stress test … but even then it was ok from a noise level. Love the 2 NVME slots on my board. I thought I rather go for the best possible chipset and be futureproof for a Zen3 Ryzen 9.

    • +1

More pcie 4 lanes. Can use two M2 ssds @ pcie 4.

  • I'd personally stay away from the Asus PRIME B550M-A board for 12 core or greater parts, though you are probably already buying a better MB if in this price category.

Should be fine for 6 or 8.

  • Galax RTX 3090 for 2500. Not bad.
MSI 3090 X Trio 2700. Not bad either.

  • I have a Taichi x370 w/ a ryzen 7 1700 comfortably oc’ed to 3.7ghz. I am planning to just upgrade the cpu to a 5800x once it is out, and also maybe upgrade my 1080 TI to either a 3070 or 3080 gpu.

I am wondering if it is justifiable in terms of gains and ROI to also upgrade my mobo to either a x570 or one of the new ones that will come out. There are other aspects to consider such as my RAM kit, I know, but just trying to get some thoughts on the mobo first.

    • Are the x300 series getting support for the new ryzens?

      I thought only 400 and 500 boards are….

Think you need to upgrade mb if it ain't

      • +3

Pretty sure only b/x400 and up mobo support Zen3. You may have to rely on non official bios hax if people decide to do some

        • good point, I did read somewhere that there was a small chance the x370 would officially support this new generation, and I guess I was holding on to that small chance…

I wonder, in the event that it does, if it would still be worth to upgrade. I was thinking if the theoretical performance gains are somewhere between 1 to approx 10% it may not be worth it.

          • @pragmaticguy: 100% it won't from everywhere I read/watch ('cept for holding out for a hacked bios as bex mentioned) so best to plan accordingly.

I think if you look at all the standards that have changed its better to be on the current platform for something you will probably have for 3 years anyways.
I've got an x470, and I'm going to change to B550 or one of the newer x570 designs. It was always a stopgap system for me with only a 2600, but theoretically I could keep the MB. I see things like pcie gen 4, 2.5 gbps lan, better memory support (partially my fault on my current MB) and updated USB standards as worth it for the 4 years I see myself holding onto this rig.

            • @3v3rqu357: @daskip thanks for the info guys, I will wait until boxing day promos (as the new releases will be more stable by then) - and it looks like once again I will just keep my HD and SSD and build a new pc almost from scratch…

  • Would Asus PRIME B550M-A (WI-FI) AMD AM4 WiFi 6 mATX Motherboard go ok with 1650 Super or 1660 Super?

Also what do you guys think I should go with? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/571921 I only play one game at the time, is 250GB enough? Or shall I go with the 500GB?

    • Just for a game drive or OS and apps as well?

And that board should have no issues with those graphics cards.

What CPU are you doing panning to run?

      • Mainly for officeworks but I will play 1 game at the time.

For CPU I am thinking AMD Ryzen 3 3300X Socket AM4 Processor with Wraith Stealth, would it have any issues with the ASUS B550 mother board and this RAM? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/571958

        • Everything should be fine. My friend has this board with a 3300x and 4 ram sticks.

        • I built a B550m with the 3300x and it is a very good combo. I got my B550m for only $105 as a runout model but I think the Asus is a better designed board and it just cost me $78 for the Asus wifi6/BT5 pcie card so this is better value.

  • Any major issues pairing the Gigabyte X570 board with a 3700X or 3900X and 4x16GB DDR4 CL16 3200MHz RAM?

    • -2

Yes. 64gb ram is just ridiculous.

      • +4

There's a number of reasons people need more RAM that's got nothing to do with gaming.

  • +5

If anyone wants an alternative to the B550 Tomahawk, there is the B550 Aorus Pro AC going for the same price ($259 from some deals posted). Has more USB slots, wifi/BT, much better audio, and a similar robust VRM that only runs 1-2 degrees hotter than the Tomahawk.

  • Will these work out of the box with ryzen 5000 processors? Says 3rd gen only on website

    • Not sure about out of the box, but if not they definitely will work with a BIOS update.

      • Will you need a CPU for this?
        Edit:old gen

        • I wasn't sure about this so I Googled it and found this, seems to cover it https://www.reddit.com/r/ASRock/comments/j6zgnw/ryzen_5000_b…

Only the MSI board here has a BIOS Flashback button, and this is what someone said to do in that thread if you go that route:

All you need to do is download the BIOS image for Zen3 once it comes out, put it on an USB stick, insert it in the back panel (I think there's a specific USB slot to use, you have to check manual), press on the BIOS Flashback button and wait a few minutes, then you're done.

No need for CPU/RAM, just power from PSU to 24-pin ATX on MOBO (ofc you'll need a different PC/laptop to format the USB stick).
