The account service fee is waived for each month:
    (a) you deposit a minimum total of $2,000 into the
account between close of business on the last
business day of the previous month and close of
business on the last business day of the current month.
If you make a deposit in a month after that time in a
month, that deposit will be included in the minimum
total monthly deposits calculation for the following
    month; or
    (b) at least one St.George home loan (other than a
Portfolio Loan) repayment is automatically deducted
from your Complete Freedom account between close
of business on the last business day of the previous
month and close of business on the last business day
    of the current month.
The monthly account service fee is also waived on one
account if you notify us that all account holders are:
    • under 21; or
    • full-time tertiary students, including apprentices.
If there is more than one holder of an account, all account
holders must meet the eligibility criteria above for the fee
    waiver to apply.
We may require you to prove you are eligible for the above
fee waiver, before or after it is applied to your account.

So could you close the account after the 45 days (after you have received the $50)? Just don't want to be hit with account fees.

    • +3

deposit 2000 in there, then immediately transfer out, no biggie :)

      • +1

Yeah but just remembering to do that each month is a bit painful.

        • +5

If you only want the free 50 then do it once. Get your sign up bonus, then close the account. If looking for a fee-free account then this isn't the one to go for.

          • @BushRangerJones: HSBC is also fee free if u deposit $2k a month with the added bonus of 2% cashback for under $99 payments. I wouldn’t keep this st George account after the $50 is done

            • @Frozensage: Banks are still doing that 2% thing? I have ing and they stopped a while back.
Also have combank and 84600 and Suncorp (for the gift cards) which iirc never did

        • If you earn less than $50 than hour, than this is worth your time to set a reminder.

        • Between stg acc counts works to. If u have 2 acc then schedule a transfer 2k monthly from first acc then then back from second acc. This can be done via netbank.

Not only do u get the 50 but you bypass the 2k min deposit monthly acc fees if u have at least 2k balance.

          Works for me anyhow.

  • Do St George credit cards count as a transaction account?

    • +1

      Yes, credit transaction account.
      No, it doesn't.

      • Yes, well but no

  • It looks like these banks are desperate for new deposits.

Open a new account and get the bonus. Then close it and move on to the next bank.

    • You will be impressed by how terrible the service of St George bank can be…

      • worse than commonwealth?

  • Anyone know if you can close the account online similar to closing credit card account?

    • +1

should be i did that at bankk of melbourne which is the same system, and basially the same bank, and was easy as to close

  • +1

So just to be clear, if already taken up this offer years before, now it's not eligible anymore?

  • correct . i never got my $50 last time as i had a closed account donkey years ago and was wbc customer.

  • Can you open and close an account from home? If opening or closing requires you to go to a post office or branch, it might not be worth it.

    • +1

You can do it online providing you can provide appropriate identification details such as - Drivers License, Medicare Card etc

EDIT: Even though it registered my account, sent me Customer # etc, I can't login and I can't reset password or anything as it doesn't seem to register my Customer # that they sent me. I need to phone them to sort it out.

I don't need this in my life, I just wanted an easy $50.

      • yes, same, i need to ring i guess

    • From the terms and conditions:

You or any other authorised person can close your accounts at any time simply by asking at any branch. Most accounts can also be closed by calling Phone Banking.

Same bad deal as Westpac as they own this bank.

  • +1

FYI their app is pretty behind, design is poor, a bit slow and not intuitive. They are slow to adopt new tech like PayID and OSKO, disable card from APP etc. They are still charging international transaction fees too. V behind .

    • +3

I have a st George bank account. PayID and Osko can be setup, cards can be disabled from app also. I know coz I lost my wallet recently.

  • Don’t forget you can get the Westpac and the St. George offer (Free $100 in total).

  • can get free account in NAB.
No need to fill out pages of info and attach DL and transfer in and out for sake of $50. Laughs…

  • Dammit, i only got $40 from opening an account from a previous deal. should have held out for this one.

    • Can I pay westpac bank receptionist $10 to save me from the hassle and pick up $40 without any questions asked?

  • +1

For some reasons they can't verify my details for f knows what reason. I gave them my license, medicare and even my Aussie passport number. Thought it was gonna be an easy $50. eh I get up, not worth the effort going into a branch.

    • +1

      I had the same thing.

  • +1

Imagine charging an account service fee for a transaction account in 2020…

    • +3

No need to imagine. It's 2020 and there are plenty of examples …

  • I made an account with the Bank of Melbourne in the past but never verified my ID. Would I still be eligible for this offer?

  • Anyone got their $50 yet

  • Looks like everyone has to go into branch to show physical ID documents.

Stupid. I gave two pieces of ID in the online application, in the hope of maximising the chance of not having to go into branch. I got an email, and it looks like a standard template sent to everyone ('if you are new to St George, you need to go into branch to unlock account').

But I did the westpac application with only 1 ID ( same as one of the two I used for St George ) and that was opened completely online, no need to go into branch. St George is owned by Westpac.

    • They want customers to go to a branch so that they can up-sell.

    • I didn't have to.

      • Did you get an email saying:

        New to St.George?
If you've just joined us, we need to confirm your ID before you can unlock and withdraw money from your account.
The good news? We can help you do this at any St.George branch in Australia. All you need to do when you visit the branch is:
        • Let the banker know that you're there to confirm your ID and unlock your account
        • Don't forget to take 2 forms of ID with you
Once your ID is confirmed, your card will arrive in 3 - 5 business days.

        • No, i got confirmation welcome email and account was opened that day. Gotta say though I have a westpac account already. Maybe that's why

  • +1

    Truly shit bank.

Signed up, their website crashed after I signed up. Couldn't retrieve password. Called up, blah blah, we sent u an SMS to reset, byyyye. It never arrived. I called back, they sent another SMS, this time I held the line. Ditto, didnt arrive. Had to give another mobile number, like wtf?

Oh and was provisionally approved for a CC, they wanted more details, click and give us por favor. Link didnt work. Called up. Blah blah. 30 minutes later, security, giving more details etc, ooooh your application had already been denied, dude on phone goes, "oh, sorry we should have called you to inform…"

Their dragon should preemptively burn the place to the ground :)

  • Anyone got their $50 yet?

    • Nope not me.

Sorry. Just checked again and i finally got it. Yay

    • Yep, $50 received and account closed over the phone (call duration 9 minutes).

      • Does the $500 have to stay in the account for the whole month to receive the bonus credit?

    • Haven't received my $50 either.

  • I applied to open an account,3-4 days later no reply yet lol

  • Would it be safe to deposit money into the account when I haven't got my card yet? I went to verify my id and they didn't even bother to send the card so I had to go back.
