For anyone opening an account, just note that the account has a $5 monthly service fee.

This is waived if you complete any of the following conditions:

    • Deposit at least $2,000 each month into the account
    • Are a Customer under the age of 21 or full-time tertiary student
    • Are a Australian Pensioner Concession or Health Care Card holder
    • Are New to Australia or expatriate customers (for the first 12 months).
    • Or if you have family working at Westpac you can get family benefits, one of which is waiving the account fee.

      • Sorry do you have a source for this?

I briefly held a Westpac account as a teenager back in the late 1980s. Now they clearly don't want me to come back. Their loss.

    • Does this include credit card accounts?

      • woud like to know this as well.

  • Does the $500 need to stay in the account for 30-45 days?

    • +2

Wondering the same question too, does it need to stay in the choice account? Coz I move the $500 to the saver account straight away

      • +1

Called Westpac and confirmed the $500 do not need to stay in the account.

        • +1

would it be safe to assume the monthly $2000 doesn't have to stay in there either?

Is it possible to close the account online without having to ring and sit on hold for fourteen hours?

    • Don’t even think about it

    • Of course

      • Im pretty sure they will ask you to come in to close the account. Thats what happened to me.

        • Or send them a letter.

    • Wait in line at a branch for 1.4 hours

  • Not as good as the free $100 CUA deal a couple of years ago!

    • ANZ offered it twice too.

    • That was a nightmare. Only got the $100 a few weeks ago.

  • BS! in 10 months it has been eaton up. Stick your hard earned money into something like Maquarie, no fees, real interest no hassles!

The 86400 deal is easier to manage for some cashback.

    • Open account in the app and activate Apple or Android Pay
    • Make a single transaction to earn $20
    • Account has no fees
    • Refer family member or friend and get another $20 (unlimited times until end of the month)

Have used both Westpac and 86400 apps and the latter is much easier to use.

Everytime i try, i am getting error on website, "We're sorry - we're having some problems", any idea what wrong??

    • I had no issues. Try again from a different browser - or though an incognito tab.

    • I got the same thing, tried again from my phone and it went through.

Does a Beem transfer count as an eligible transaction?

    • curious as well!

I kept getting an error applying online, so I called and got bounced around a few people, and 2 of their staff both told me that this offer is only available in you're under 30, which I'm not.

That's not how I understand the wording of their T&C, but the people on the phone were very adamant that that's the condition. Does anyone else think this wording is completely off?

    • Yep, I asked the same question and they said it's only for people who are under 30 years of age. The wording is not right. To me, it sounds like the age requirement is only when you apply at the branch.

Westpac is one of the worst banks I have dealt with.

      • That pisses me off.

I interpreted it as well that if you apply online, you get the $50.

        Complete waste of time.

Westpac also told me I wouldn't receive a credit check after I applied and then withdrew a credit card application after they tried to charge a fee.

I then see a credit check go through later on.

These guys are the worst of the banks to seal with for me.

    • I applied online and the account was created - card is being mailed - I am over 30.

      • Well, anyone can apply for the account. The question is whether you would be eligible for the $50 cashback if you are over 30.

    • "To be eligible for the $50 offer you must: open a new Westpac Choice account online between 7/10/2020 and 28/01/2021, or in branch if you’re under 30 years old; and deposit $500 and make 5 eligible card purchases within 30 days of account opening."

I think there would be grounds to go to the financial ombudsman based on this.

      • Without a doubt.

        And also based on:-

Get $50 with a new Westpac Choice everyday bank account. Apply online by 28th January 2021, and deposit $500 and make 5 eligible purchases within 30 days. Under 30? You can also apply in branch. New transaction account customers only. T&Cs apply#

I wonder if anyone has tried it still after knowing they might have issue getting the deal.

  • Would digital purchases, such as Google play store count? Thinking how to get 5 the cheapest and most convenient way

    • +1

      Woolworths self serve.
      5x 1¢ partial payments.
Then you can pay the remainder with your prefered payment method (i.e. discounted gift cards).

      • cheers, it's a hassle but probably the easiest (and definitely cheapest) way, thanks!

  • Does anyone know if Beem It Transfer would do?

  • +1

    anyone got their 50$ yet?

  • Opened an account 3 weeks ago and haven't got the card yet…

    • Me either. Card never arrived.

      • +1

Westpac is pretty bad in many aspects from my account open experience.

Call them (as I did today)

  • +2

    Received my $50 yeaterday!

    • Me too. Took only 4 minutes on the phone to close the account.

    • got mine on 23rd-nov.

    • Got mine too

    • Got mine, wont close account yet, gottta siphon the 200$ credit card offer first huehuehue

    • My $50 came through on 23/11 but just noticed it now. Cleaned the account out to $nil. Closing was super easy via chat, once your logged into internet banking then down the bottom is "Need help? Chat with us". Took 3 minutes max. Hats off to Westpac

  • For those who got their $50, how long was the wait from completing 5 purchases until you received the cashback?

    • Almost the full 45 days, probably 43 days for me?

  • +1

just got my 50 bux! - I think I hit the 5 tx early Nov.

  • +1

My $50 came in on 23 Nov. Did qualifying transactions on 23 Oct.

  • For those that got their $50 were they under 30?

  • Late to the party on the Westpac transaction account offers but better late than never. Definitely not too hard to hit.

And that is on top of the Platinum credit card offer they have at the moment.

Also does transactions using the digital debit card count towards the 5 transactions required?
