Im holding out for the ARM chips….is that a bad idea?
Also JB HI FI have this on sale for $2699 when they have there monthly 10% off macs…

    • It's better to wait and see, than to buy now and regret later. Plus, the older models could get cheaper as they bring the ARM macs onto shelves.

Well we don't know. As much as Apple has promised us things about the ARM chips, I firmly believe that there would be a lot of compatibility issues. Just as an example, Apple has promised that ARM will have Thunderbolt 3 support, but we won't really know about the compatibility with existing TB3 tech.

      • well yeah

with arm coming you can bet x86 will havd limited life

if you were spending say $1,5k i'd say risk it

but at close to dbl that?

        • +1

Based on the transition from PowerPC to x86. It would still take about 5 years before they are completely replaced. The transition back then had a lot of issues, and I expect the same for this transition.

@shellshocked: The point is x86 development will be halted well before that, even if it’s still compatible, and with Apple engineers already working with ARM on their mobile platform might be quicker

3k for a potential 3 year laptop is a bit much if you ask me

            • @[Deactivated]: also do you want to be on the downward slope or the end point of a generation…. for $3k???

      • TB3 is intel, unless they licence from them no way of getting it

I wouldn't hold my breathe considering Apple's track record.

The new update mbp with the revised/recalled keyboard is a polished finished product.

    • Depends. If you’re using some software specific to intel Macs then don’t risk it. Otherwise wait for ARM macs to come out

      • I have had no laptop for about 6 months. I returned my loan asus zenbook back to workplace.
I have a $500 jb card to use as well and wanted a macbook pro.
        Kinda over the windows,
I was going to buy one not long ago but then was swayed by a few people here saying to wait for arm.

Im using a ipad 6th gen, was laying around.

if that's your situation, I'd go for it.

I paid $3518 for the 2016 15 macbook pro with top specs (had a macbook air before that). Some haters will tell you it is overpriced. But I have been using the laptop everyday in the last 4 years (with joy). The daily cost is around $2.4, and that is discounting the resale value.

The ARM macbook could be good, or could be a disaster. So if you need one now, I'd say go for it.

          • @ctan7: How do you feel about the increase screen size vs less portability?

    • I did price match with office work and get 5% off the price thanks guys was looking for it for a while cheers!!

  • Why are people upholding this deal? Some Ozbargain licences need to be turned in pronto!

    • Not everyone is broke

IMO, MPB 13 is not enough of a jump in performance from the MacBook Air 13.
MBP16 is the way to go if you really want to feel a performance increase.
    Granted, it’s extremely expensive.

    • that was my thinking when I went from macbook air to macbook pro. The performance and extra screen space were great, but the power adaptor requirement (86w) was a massive pain in the butt (and the weight of the power brick).

I love the 15' macbook, but i'd go for 13 for the next one.

  • Does anyone know how to do an Officeworks price match in Melbourne, where stores are closed?
