Virgin Australia - 100% Bonus Points on Point Purchases up to 100k Points

80

Just received an email about VA doubling point purchases upto 100k. I've done the maths below which shows better value from 50k points upwards where you hit 1.17c per point

I know the typical value of points is 1c each, which this exceeds. But combined with the current 30% off economy reward bookings then it could be equivalent to 0.82c per point cost.

Then obviously redeeming for business delivers much better value vs cash price

  • Virign going down the cheap route? Maybe not bottom dwellers like Tiger, but cheap means less service, less lounges…

I'd probably transfer to krisflyer instead if the redemption are ok

It is still blocked I think.

      • I meant for those chasing business class redemption, its better to transfer out to krisflyer. I dont know how good virgin business class will be moving forwards.

They've mentioned a few things but the new ceo is from jetstar,…so….

Don’t think you can transfer to Krisflyer in the foreseeable future as Virgin have cut points and status earning with their airline partners.

@nightelves: Don't think you'll ever be able to again, you could only do it before as Singapore were part owner of Virgin. After having their shareholding obliterated and losing millions, I doubt they'd consider getting back into bed with them.

            • @[Deactivated]: Yeah that’s what I’m thinking as well. Kinda thankful I made the decision at the time to transfer to Krisflyer as that portal was blocked two days later.

      • Given that SIA no longer have a stake in Virgin, I don't forsee it coming back any time soon either.

Krisflyer have a 3 year hard expiry. If borders stay closed for that long then Krisflyer points are worthless.

  • I know cashreward works with Points.com so its possible to get another 7% off on purchase.

  • If they don't change all their rewards with the new CEO

This is highly prospective, almost no value in buying VA points for economy domestic redemptions.

VA business will not look like 'business' by the time things are back to normal. Bain Capital has changed VA's value proposition…closing lounges, reducing service overheads, no international long haul.

Also I would say with SIA's ownership either changed or removed with the recapitalisation, the ability to transfer VA points to SQ would likely end. There is already an end date for partner airline points claims of April 2021

At this juncture, would not buy any points from VA no matter how cheap. May end up flying a Jetstar equivalent airline. Bain Capital is notorious in stripping new acquisitions clean of all assets and bail out. Lucky Velocity is at least a stand alone entity but for how long. There are always ways to dip their dirty hands in. Pity the staff who voted in confidence of Bain keeping their words.

    • So if I want to buy flights tomorrow, I shouldn't buy these points to use at a discount?

  • Still got 220k of VFF points that are sitting there going dormant 🙄🙄

    • Yep same boat for me

  • I used to work for this airline… I would caution against anything on offer, although the airline has been bailed out the product offering for what you think you may be receiving will be very different to what you will get… personally I saw the writing the wall long before I lost my career and I got my family to cash out of VA points in Kris miles or GC equivalents….

This is like Capital raising in disguise.
