Why not spend a bit more and get the 865+?

    https://www.tobydealsau.com/en_AU/product/asus-rog-phone-3-z…

    • Are there any other differences, besides the 865+?

      • The prime core CPU of the Sd865plus is increase by 9.2% along with the GPU having an increase of speed10% too.
So basically it's an overclocked SD865.

    • +27

I wouldn't bother myself for a 10 percent increase in price you get about 2 percent increase in performance

Snapdragon 865 Plus Vs Snapdragon 865
      1.5% faster CPU speed
      1 x 3.1GHz & 3 x 2.42GHz & 4 x 1.8GHzvs vs 1 x 2.84 & 3 x 2.42 & 4 x 1.8GHz
13MHz faster GPU clock speed 600MHz vs 587MHz

      • +29

Thanks for the summary. The GHz spec hurts my eyes

        • +1

i skipped that line altogether then read your comment 🤣

      • +4

Evidently, the plus refers to the price, not the performance

    • Exactly, don't get this one. Get the 865+. I ordered this about a week ago, just got the tracking number.

Its an amazing price for this phone, switching from a Samsung, I'm sick of the Exynos CPU, the Snapdragon is better.

Keep in mind this is a grey import, so will take a few weeks to get to you, coming from HK and may be delayed by Australia Post due to Covid. I see alot of negative feedback about the lack of communication and speed of delivery, don't expect this within days, it would be weeks as clearly marked on the website.

  • +4

i heard some really bad reviews from Tobydeals

    • +10

They won't sell many if they are giving it bad reviews.

      • +2

just had a look on forums from Ozbargin

        • +7

Painful to deal with, specially due to lack of communication / radio silence, even their local courier tracking, but once landed & passed onto local courier it's smooth sailing. My order reached me just before 8pm on a weekday, a day after customs cleared & courier received at the their depo. More efficient than AusPost that's for sure, specially in Melb.

          • +10

@adinico: I ordered the 865+ ROG Phone 3 and its on its way to me. Don't expect lightning fast service.

Those people who leave negative reviews about Toby deals AU either don't read or just have unrealistic expectations. They are based in HK, as clearly detailed on the website, so logically it would take weeks for you to receive it, this is part of the deal, the products are priced accordingly. If you want it quicker, pay more for it. Simple as that.

Speaking from personal experience, 3 days after I paid, no tracking, so I emailed them. They responded after 2 days, saying there is a delay. Then on the 12th day after paying (including weekends), I received the tracking information.

So far this is very much in line with my expectations from a grey importer. Kogan has this for $949, maybe they will ship faster.

            • +3

@techlead: Only dealt with them once. Bought a poco x3 and waited about 1.5 weeks and still wasnt posted. And no reply to my emails or tickets. Only got a reply after opening a dispute with paypal stating they are unsure when stock will arrive.
Took nearly 2.5 weeks of stuffing around and got my money back. Never once did their website say it was on backorder or out of stock.

              • @bart2: That's bad, they wouldn't be the only site to do that. Try to sell more than what they have in stock.

    • +7

Non existing costomer service. If nothing goes wrong, no problem.

If you get defective device, damaged during shipping, missing item, wrong product, need repair under warranty etc, good luck dealing with them.

      • +2

That's the risk you take dealing with a grey importer and getting items 20-30% off aus RRP. If you aren't willing to take that risk don't buy from them.

      • Just keep annoying the shit out of the them. Took about 3 emails to cancel my order before it was shipped. Not bad service for a grey importer tbh. I've had much worse..

  • +3

Have ordered through tobydeals for 4 times now no issues except slow in communication have placed order for xiaomi MI10T 2 days ago through them

    • They've always responded within 2 days, which is fine in my books.

  • +3

rog 2 still holding up strong

    • Yeah only major benefit would be 5G.

      • Yeah definitely. I can hold off on 5G. It's the main reason I'm not switching over to the iPhone 12 tbh

      • +5

No, you get more benefits than that. Watch the tear down videos of the Rog Phone 2 and Rog Phone 3. Rog Phone 3 has a very good cooling system. The grill on the Rog Phone 2 is for show, its not connected to anything internal.

Don't get the Rog Phone 2 now, its way more worth it to get the Rog phone 3.

        • I didnt say the only benefit, I said "major".

        • +3

          I don't have either, but isn't the ROG 3 kinda a downgrade?

According to reviews: it's larger, heavier, yet less efficient. 5G isn't a reason for upgrade, nor is moving from a Base-855 to an OC-865+ performance. No headphone jack and a noticeable downgrade to speakers. Software and support kind of flaky on both models. Only significant upgrade is on the rear Main Camera.

They needed to make the ROG 2 smaller/pocketable, add microSD, and add a Removable Battery = ie Gaming Features. Instead they went the opposite direction. For a phone that does it all, I would instead opt for the Sony Xperia 5.2. My other picks would be the Sony Xperia 1.2 and the OnePlus 8 Pro. Of course, I'm mentioning the phone models, the pricing or "value" is another matter entirely.

  • +4

    At 240 grams that's a chonk!

  • +5

Make your phone waterproof like the big boys, and I'm in. Until then I'll go with a phone that doesn't drown

    • +4

Ideally yeah BUT a gaming phone needs to dissipate heat ASAP hehe

    • +1

a lot of people think that water resistance is not necessary for phones… but then they'll realise it when going to extreme weather such as the snow etc where the water resistance features actually help with weather sealing as well…

      • I've still got the original ROG phone and I bought it knowing it's got next to 0 waterproofing. I wouldn't go as far as saying water resistance is "necessary", though that's not to say people won't get their phone wet eventually on everyday use.

When friends ask if its a good phone to get I always warn them that being drunk on a rainy day and forgetting to protect the phone is all it takes to destroy it, so I go out of my way to not really recommend it to many people as a result.

Otherwise, I'm super conscious of where I put my phone everywhere I go, and once poured Red Bull over it (on the front side, thankfully). I don't go to areas with extreme weathers neither, though if I did I'd make preparations to protect the phone. Really depends on the individual whether they are aware of the dangers upon purchasing the phone.

        • Yes, protection is must..🙂

    • They have an air grill, no way it can be waterproof.

  • +1

No GST charge from Tobydeals, right?

  • +2

didn't realise the ROG lineup expanded to phones. interesting

  • +1

If you're interested in using Google Pay, banking apps or anything else that needs to pass Safery Net, you may have issues.

As per the site 'CN Ver. with flashed OS'. A quick Google shows me that you can relock the bootloader but it may still have issues with Safety Net, depending on whether any modifications have been made to the ROM that it's been flashed with.

It also means you probably won't get updates.

    • +2

From what I have read online, no issues reported for Google play applications, so let's see when I actually get the phone.

I ordered the 865+one 2 weeks ago, its on its way to me now. Will report back when I get it.

      • +1

I've got the rog phone 2, and when on wifi everything works but on mobile data Google stuffs like maps, playstore, gmail etc doesn't work. I've been lost few times because of map not working. Looking to flash the WW version this week when i get time.

        • There's been alot of issues with the flashed ROG phone 2, let's hope the ROG phone 3 is better.

        • I've been using a ROG 2 (tencent ver.) since Nov '19. I've never been able to update it even though I was told OTA was supported (its not, well not as I received it). Everything else works as it is supposed to.

By all accounts by those who did upgrade the rom, on XDA, say that the Android 10 update is bad news, runs much hotter, 10-20% less battery life and most users go back to A9.

Flashing roms is out of my league, esp when they used different versions to get it working as a whole (CN fingerprint, WW ROM etc.)

I recently contacted the seller asking about the lack of OTA, they said send it back and we'll upgrade it for you, they're in Taiwan.
          Not gonna happen.

Love the phone, although I found it slippery without a skin/case and aggressive battery optimisation make notifications spotty until you turn it off. Didn't get it for gaming, loving the SOT and battery life.

EDIT: Bought from eBay seller Perfect_Mission

          • @Pred8r: Phone's really fragile though. Happened to drop once and got crackline on the screen and back us busted so I'm using the transparent case they sent along.

Whats the point of an Asus ROG phone?

    • +4

Very good specs for a very good price. 144Hz screen, 865+ Snapdragon, 12GB RAM, that's amazing and a flat screen (that might be a personal preference, I don't like these curved screens on the Samsung and other phones).

The screen would be amazing, it has shoulder buttons for gaming.

    • What's the point of a Galaxy Phone, or an iPhone etc etc

Can't other brands offer something? ASUS has made phones for a while….

Obviously designed, marketed and geared towards gaming.

To their credit, atleast they try to be different unlike most.

      • +4

        Here's how they roughly lineup:
(note, these can change depending on the year and model)

Apple - best support (After sales, Hardware, Software, Apps)
Pixel - best Android support (Software support)
OnePlus - good support (Community support)
Samsung - good support (After sales, Hardware)
Sony - most features (waterproof, stereo speakers, etc etc)
LG - most wildcard (sometimes their flagship is best/worst)
        Huawei - best camera
        Xiaomi - best value
        Meizu - best design
        ASUS - best gaming features
        CAT - best tradie features

Then there's the rest of the other OEMs:
(some make great devices, others are good value, and some are extinct, but yeah here they be listed)

Microsoft, Nokia, BlackBerry, Sharp, Acer, HTC, Motorola, Lenovo, Alcatel, ZTE, Oppo, Vivo, Realme, Redmi, Honor, Blu.

        • Sony still has phones? … thought they gave up there. I would also argue that Pixel also have best or close to best camera's :)

    • +2

144Hz AMOLED screen, plus their gaming pads!!

  • +2

Their online reviews are just horrible, too scary to order from them for almost $1k of my hard earn cash …

    • +1

You can pay with PayPal and your debit/credit card. You have nothing to worry about.

I ordered this 2 weeks ago.

      • +1

If anything goes wrong with the phone, you'll effectively end up with a 240gr brick.
Imagine their sales department is so bad, imagine their support!

        • True, you get what you pay for I guess. If you are willing to take the risk, its a good discount.

  • -3

    TL;DR

  • +6

Heads up OP, you can use the usual CART3 code to bring it down to $794.43.

    • +1

Awww, that's an amazing price. I ordered this 2 weeks ago for $869. T_T

  • +1

Good deal - would have bought this if the S20 FE 5G with snapdragon 865 for $594 at JB Hifi deal didn't exist… but want the 2yr local warranty

    • Its good that Samsung is not putting the Exynos 990 into the S20 FE. I'm moving away from Samsung because of that, the Exynos chips is inferior to the Snapdragon one.

      • They did, 4G has Exynos.

        • Yuck…stay away from Exynos. The S20 Ultra 5G has it, not good.

    • What's this deal that you speak of? I am in the market for an s20 FE…

  • -5

    Ahh the neckbeard gamer phone

    • It can be an /anything you want phone/ with those specs. I especially like the 6000mah monster battery

  • +3

Keep in mind this is the Tencent edition, sold in China but flashed with the worldwide ROM, so Google apps can work on it.

This mean it doesn't come in that fancy weird box and will not have the active cooling gadget included.

Personally, I don't mind, the premium for the global edition is not worth it.

    • One side effect of the custom firmware is that some apps behave weirdly and require custom solutions. My brother had issues with audio on his ROG2 phone, but ASUS refused to provide advice based on the fact the firmware was "not official".

Thankfully someone on the internet had found a way to work around it and its fine now, but that seems to be the level of support you'll get.

      • Good point, don't expect any support from Asus Australia as they don't officially sell this type of the phone.

So when you purchase this phone be aware of this risk. I'm happy to tinker with it, I used to flash my Samsung Galaxy phones with other Android OSes, so I'm fine with it.

If you don't want to tinker with tech, this phone is not for you, get the global edition or the iphone, that's the ultimate set and forget, you will never break an iphone accidentally through settings lol.

  • +1

    Dimensions 171 x 78 x 9.9 mm (6.73 x 3.07 x 0.39 in)
    Weight 240 g (8.47 oz)

No thanks, this thing is a brick!

  • +2

As someone who purchased a CN version of the ASUS ROG 2 (Flashed with WW OS) and had to root the phone to modify the HWInfo to the WW Edition to get the Fingerprint / Video Camera working.

I also still can't get FOTA so I'm still running Android Security Updates from October 2019. I would need to factory reset my phone if I wanted the latest FW from ASUS.

Good Price, but is it worth all the hassle?, that depends. I love the battery capacity but still end up charging it at 60% at night just like any other phone.

    • Let's see when I get the phone, from what I read online the flashed ROG phone 3 is better. You can get OTA updates and it doesn't have those fingerprint/video camera issues.

If I do, I will be returning it, as support specifically said, none of those issues should exist for this flashed ROG phone 3.

    • If you have 60% battery on a gaming phone at the end of the day, thats brilliant with 144hz AMOLED

      • Ironically, I just checked my phone and it was embarassingly running at 60hz refresh rate. I'm not sure when it decided to downgrade. I've upped it back to 120hz (Max for ROG 2 phones)

  • +3

One forgotten spec on this beast of a phone is that it also doubles as a surfboard.

    • But missing the best feature of all; IR blaster

  • Quick question on someone who has ordered from these guys before. IS there a Forex charge. Not planning to use the 28 degrees card.

    • You will be charged in AUD, no Forex fee.

    • Not planning to use the 28 degrees card.

      Why not ?!

  • Wait a minute, these phones are NOT factory sealed?
    So they reflash international ROM?

    No thanks

    • +1

They do this for most if not all CN phones.

They normally reseal them before shipping.

      • Just hope the dont drop the phones then heh

        • They do this like professionals.

I've bought phones that are re-flashed, normally you can't tell that they've been opened.

          No finger prints etc.

          • @aveeno bb: QED

You may trust the factory to discard their rejects, but with these Third party resellers, NOT convinced!!

  • Would be a great tablet if they extended it to the size of the Mate 20X at 85mm wide

  • +1

Omg been trying to get the 512bg version of this phone right now. Jb wont price match online yet!!! only $50 off, but I won't give up till i hassle them down. Anyway for $69 more u get the 865+ https://www.tecobuy.com/en_AU/asus-rog-phone-3-zs661ks-sd865…

  • Or just spend around $300 for Redmi Note 9 Pro instead? Not really into too much gaming, just the look of this plus that fancy aero cooler fan very attracting

    • +1

Even if you aren't into games the massive battery means this phone has better longevity than most. also means you won't ever really need to carry a power bank.

      • 100%

  • +1

This is what I want. Just waiting for the price to get a lot closer to $400
