FYI This is the WORST website to deal with. They leave items still up for sale well beyond their actual intent of trying to have stock it took me 5 emails and a month to see why my item hasn't been shipped, and they told me it's because they had no stock

Well someone up there earlier replying my post saying if using CC or Paypal then no need to worry, its the pain and time you have to chase thru these idiots to get your money back, I'd rather pay a bit more and get it from a good seller instead.

      • I had no idea that these guys were so horrendous at responding to emails or even getting in contact with me to say they didn't have the item.

        • That's absolutely so unprofessional and bad, sure won't take the risk, good luck to all that have ordered that they actually have stock to send.

This is tempting as im sick of my Samsung overheating in AU weather

The Exynos version runs alot heater than the Snapdragon one. Not very happy with getting an inferior product.

  • My 2c: ROG 2 12/512 ROG version (not tencent) still going strong though Asus does struggle with firmware updates and timely fixes. Have come across a lot of bugs which get annoying but then they eventually patch it up. Normally get about 10-12hrs SOT over about 2-3 days which is great. Those who get the ROG 3 just be mindful of this.

      • At the moment I am WFH so constantly connected to Wifi vs mobile data plus I have decent signal at home so never cop any drop outs. YMMV but my opinion is based on my usage of the ROG2 not 3.

  • Can these be rooted?
If so, good custom rom/kernel community?
What are Asus like with software and security updates?
Is Android 11 on these or imminent?

  • Not $0.01? Disappointing no one ever beat Optus for marketing and data collection.

  • Ordered one. Let's see when I get it.

  • I ordered a ROG phone from them late last year in another too good to be true deal.
Website said they were in stock, accepted my order and money then nothing …
They did get back to me eventually and say they were waiting on stock to arrive … Hmm I though your site said "in stock" when I ordered it??? … waited some more and then some more and then asked for refund - pretty sure I got the refund … s**t maybe I had better check … phew! - yep refund received :D
Glad other people have had successful deals with these guys but for me they need a better inventory system before I order through them again. Would have preferred - sorry we have no stock but can get more would you still like to proceed over take my money and not update my order status until I asked and 2 days after that latter get told of the stock issue …

I purchased the ROG Phone 3 with Snapdragon 865+ 12GB RAM and 128GB storage from Toby Deals AU and here's my experience.

Day 1 - purchase and payment
Day 3 - no tracking info, sent follow up email, "where is my order"?
    Day 4 - Advised there's a slight delay
Day 7 - received tracking information
Day 11 - received the phone

Benchmarked it, GeekBench 5 score - 988 Single core 3357 Multi score

The Software version is 17.0822.2005.11 which is lower than the current most up to date one on the ASUS Australia website, WW-17.0823.2008.78. Security updates is as of 1st May 2020. So I will contact support regarding this as they said I can receive OTA updates. I clicked on software update and it said I have the latest update which is clearly not the case.

Apart from that the phone is absolutely amazing, I'm upgrading from a Samsung Exynos.

    • In addition to this, the firmware version my phone ships in has screen crush issues at low brightness. This means at low brightness videos look pixellated and horrible, this is a well documented issue and it is due to poor calibration of the screen NOT Asus using low quality screens.
You can try it on your monitor, it looks good, but if you mess up the gamma and saturation settings, it will look horrible as well.
Asus has fixed this in a recent firmware update, so I've contacted support to ask them how I can get the updated firmware to fix this issue.

    • Quick question. Which shipping method did you use and were you charged GST or any other fee by the carrier. Thanks

  • Looking forward to mine!!

  • Update on my ROG Phone 3 which I bought from Toby Deals AU.

I have been able to resolve the update issue. My phone shipped with firmware 17.0822.2005.11 and it doesn't receive OTA updates. However, I downloaded a HW info app and found that the ROM which is loaded on the phone is the worldwide version. So I went to the ASUS Australia website and downloaded the latest firmware which is WW-17.0823.2008.78 at the time of writing (2.74GB). I copied the file into the root directory for the phone, this means not in any folder just in the level where you click into the phone store. Some folders which you can see should be "DCIM", "Android" and "Download", if you see them, you are in the root directory. Its a zip file, just copy it in, don't expand/extract it.

I restarted the phone and it detected the update file immediately, click update to begin the update process. It took less than 5 mins, amazing, way faster than Samsung.

This latest update fixes the screen crush issue. Everything is working fine, amazing phone, I can feel the part with the glass window in the back get toasty during gaming and HD youtube watching sessions.

    • All that sounds much easier than what i read on xda.

Hope everything is working fine with the new firmware.

Waiting for my phone to arrive.

      • +1

        Working amazingly well.

Just benchmarking it at the moment. Its great. I seriously think that Samsung should be sued for misleading and deceptive conduct (abit of a stretch, probably not hold up in court) but seriously, the difference between the Snapdragon and Exynos CPUs is so great that they should really be classed as two different phones. My Samsung CPU temp hits 65 degrees after around 15 minutes of benchmarking, the ROG Phone 3 performs better and doesn't go over 50 at all, highest I have seen it was 46 degrees during peak loads. Watching youtube videos of the Samsung phones with Snapdragon chips yielded much lower temps and better performance. All the regions with the Exynos variant are getting ripped off.

Personal preference, I don't like the included case, so I got a tough one which wraps around the entire phone. I'm used to Spigen's tough armour cases, so I got a similiar one for my ROG Phone 3, just waiting for it to arrive.

Very happy with it so far. This is a flagship performance phone for under $900, yes, there are compromises, but I can live with them. Camera is definitely not as good or snappy as the other flagships

        • Thanks for the updates, very useful! Still waiting for mine to arrive, really happy to hear your having such a great experience with it. I will also follow your advice and software update as soon as it arrives!!

          • @hardjards: Apparently new updates from Asus regarding the black crush issue soon.

Also, I'm experiencing a weird auto rotate glitch, it doesn't seem to work after a while, but when I restart it's fine, I think it's a software issue. The only time I use landscape is with maps in the car, so in the interim I have downloaded an app to force it.

Games and YouTube videos when expanded go into landscape mode with no issue, so not sure why. Software is definitely a weak point of this phone, but I'm still happy. Sub $900 for a 12GB RAM Snapdragon 865+ phone with a 144Hz display is amazing!

  • no expandable microsd support?

    • Yea, no SD card slot, just dual sim

  • Ordered on 22/10/20. Still no signs of shipping.

    • I emailed them, told me there was a slight delay. Hopefully soon, I want to retire my old S8!!

    • I just got a shipping confirmation today, hopefully, it turns up nice and fast

      • Which shipping option did you select and what courier are they using.

        • They used DHL for me, came pretty quickly, mine came 11 days (including weekends) from payment.

I suggest you get a case as well, the bundled case is not very protective. I ordered mine from Amazon.

          • @techlead: Got Shipping confirmation last night. Has been shipped by DPEX.

            • @hawamahal: Yeah same DPEX, I just selected standard shipping I think.

          • @techlead: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/IMAK-For-Asus-ROG-Phone-3-ZS661K…

Ordered this off fleabay, about 12 bucks with a tempered glass screen protector thrown in, - I cant do massive armour cases, this looks like it is light enough to carry, and will protect the corners in the event of a drop.

            • @hardjards: I got that exact case as well, but on Amazon for $23 including shipping because I have prime, comes with 2 glass protectors.

I'm finding that I'm getting alot accidental touches on the edge of the screen, that's why I need a case. I get the same experience with my S20 Ultra. I can never use phones naked.

  • Be aware of the potential issues with this phone which are primarily:

    1. Black crush - in low brightness settings, video appear pixellated, this has greatly improved from the firmware which was shipped with the device
    2. Auto rotate not working - I think it's a software glitch, after a while, auto rotate does not work, even though I toggled that feature on. I used the diagnostic tool and it says the G sensor is working fine. When I restart, it works again.

Apart from that amazing performance. I do alot of mutli tasking, this is performing better than the S20 Ultra 5G Exynos version.

    • Do AU bank, Google Pay, and other Google apps work?
Did you install these apps from Google Play store?

      • +1

Yes, I have tested it with a wide range of bank apps, all working with no issues.

Google Play store is installed out of the box. They've flashed the Tencent model with the World wide rom. I've upgraded my ROG phone 3 twice already by downloading the update directly from Asus Australia and it has worked with no issues so far, apart from the screen crush and auto rotate issue.

    • Thanks for all the info techlead. Could you please confirm if it has widevine L1?

      • +1

It does have Widevine L1, confirmed in the Netflix app (Diagnostic section).

  • I read alot of negative reviews about Toby deals, did someone share some feedbacks dealing with it.

Another question is i saw the description above included "AeroActive Cooler 3", is this correct? I searched on ebay, it only comes with 512gb.
    Thanks.

    • +1

The description is not correct, this is the Tencent version, so the Aerocool 3 is not included.

Search for my comment about how long it took for me to receive it. Long story short, 11 days (including weekends) from payment.

Keep in mind this is a grey import, the phone is sent from HK. Alot of these negative reviews seem to come from unrealistic expectations. Although, in some cases Toby Deals AU may be guilty of selling phones when they have no stock on hand, they are not the first nor the last retailer to be guilty of that.

The Aerocool 3 only comes with the global version which is sold in Australia.

      • Hi mate,

Thanks for your insight, i have read your comments above on the delivery of the phone and its issues on auto-rotate and firmware update (black crush).
How is the phone usage so far? I am concern on its "CN version flashed with global ROM" feature.

Sorry for million questions, as I noted that the deal is still available and CART3 code still usable and it is my first time using Toby.
So I am thinking to buy this one or 865+ version. Thanks.

        • In terms of usage, it's very good, multi tasking is a breeze, it doesn't get as hot as the S20 Ultra under similar usage. Battery capacity is a beast!

The other issue I have is accidental touches on the side, but I get this with most phones, that's why I got a case for it.

Apart from that, it's amazing, I hope Asus fixes the screen crush issue, but even then it's very good value already.

          • @techlead: Thanks mate.

            • @RJGunner: Oh, and the camera is bad, it's decent enough in situations with enough light, but rubbish in low light conditions

  • I did see some other peeps on forums with the same auto rotate issue, but it seemed really random and doesn't effect all users. The crush issue appears to be common, but most users report the last patch alleviated most of the issues. Can't wait for mine to turn up!!

    • When you expect to receive the phone?

      Happy for you mate.

    • You will most likely need to update when you get the phone as they've just released an update on 28th Oct.

    • I think I have found a way to fix it, enable then go into Developer options and turning this option on: Disable HW overlays - Always use GPU for screen compositing.

  • I fixed the black crush issue by going into Developer options and turning this option on: Disable HW overlays - Always use GPU for screen compositing.

So far all the black crush issues has disappeared. I have now locked the screen to 144Hz. Youtube looks normal, when before it had this weird hue. Everything seems fine now.

The auto rotate issue still persistent, but I'm managing this with a third part app which allows me to manually toggle between portrait and landscape.

I'm very happy that the black crush issue is resolved for me. That was the only major pain point for me.

  • Well according to tracking my phone has now hit Australia so should be in my hands shortly. Techlead - locking the phone to full time 144hz and the GPU usage, have you noticed any signifficant impact on battery life?

    • Mine is in Botany as well. So should receive it tomorrow or day after at the latest.

    • Yes, there is an impact on battery, but I think it is doing better than my S20 Ultra (Exynos version) which is expected as the ROG Phone 3 has a huge 6000mah battery.

144Hz and GPU only definitely uses alot more juice, it will definitely not be a 2 day charge phone, but then I'm a heavy user. I multi-task alot, I'm constantly in teams meetings with video during business hours, sometimes while messaging and emailing on the phone, then I use maps after hours and watch youtube, so I have alot of screen time. The battery lasts a full day with this use, which is not bad. I constantly have access to a charge, so battery life is not an important feature for me.

  • Got my phone today, it already has the version WW-17.0823.2007.32, which is the latest on Asus Australia website.

  • That is interesting, mine did not have that version, it was the earlier one linked by Tech.

After a bit of hunting around the I found the latest repository of updates for the WW version, you will note the ones here are bit more advanced then on the AU site.

  • I am just downloading now and will update shortly, will post back if I brick it :P
On a different note, I havent been able to replicate your issue with the screen not auto-rotating, mine seems to work perfectly so far.

Will check the black crush issue post the update, haven't really had a chance to look for it yet as I am still updating etc.

  • Just finished setting everything up. Very very happy with this phone

    • hardjards, so from the day you paid until you received the phone, how long does it take?
Tech mentioned his phone need 11 days.

Any issues on delivery of the phone and communication with toby? Ta.

  • I ordered on the 22nd and it arrived yesterday. That was the free standard shipping. I will be honest communication isn't great, after two days I hadn't heard anything back so emailed them, other then my payment receipt, got no response, on day 4 I threatened a PayPal dispute, got a response within 8 hours apologizing for the delay.

Got my shipping info about day 6 and then my phone by about day 13.

    • Same for me as well. Ordered on 22/10/20, arrived yesterday i.e. 03/11/20. Poor communication from Tobysdeal. I selected the cheapest shipping method as well.
Saying that, I am happy with the delivery time and overall service.
Probably they themselves order the phone after a customer orders and they keep nothing in stock.

  • Upgraded to WW_17.0823.2009.98 in the morning. Now upgrading to WW_17.0823.2009.99.

  • Yeah actually I am super impressed, they are really really active with the updates, and the security patches. Bloody fantastic

  • And evidently Android 11 is around the corner… Winning!

  • Can anyone confirm this is version A, which has all Australian bands(including n5 for 5g). I am looking for 865+ and only this is stopping me from buying it now.

    • How to check if it is version A or B. I can check if you want to. Also I bought the 865+ version.

      • I think you can only check it after root.
If we follow tobydeals description, it must be version A as it has all bands.

        Do you have volte/vowifi working?

This is the link to the 865+ version, and yes according to its spec sheet it has N5

    • Yeah I see that but techlead mentioned it is tencent version which is most probable B version.

Also, is VOLTE/VOWIFI working for you?

      • I don't think VOLTE works on these phones. I can't even find settings for VOLTE anywhere.

        • It works according to xda forums after some modifications.
If you try this, it will activate volte but wont survive a reboot.

Dial ##3642623344## through the stock dialer app.

          More on volte

Excited for this phone, lets hope VOLTE works after those modifications.

  • Just a note on 5G. By default 5G is turned off. Make sure to turn it on to connect to 5G.
Also I bought the 865+ version and I am able to connect to 5G wherever the coverage is.

  • +1

Its now reduced to $774 and can claim 1.5% cashback on top on it.

  • Just placed my order today with Black Friday sale on 865+ with $820 (Cart3 code still usable + 1.5% cashrewards), fingers crossed!
