Beaware..its 18 months (not 12) without any AMEX card..

"Card Members who currently hold or who have previously held any Card product issued by American Express Australia Limited, in the preceding 18 month period are ineligible for the bonus Qantas Points offer."

    • How about the status points?

    • Thanks I would have wasted my time applying for this otherwise!

    • It's a terrible sentence. Interpretation depends on whether you read "issued by American Express" as primarily being an adjective or a verb.

In other words it could mean:-

Card Members who currently hold, or who have previously held, any American Express-issued Card product in the preceding 18 month period are ineligible for this offer.

Note that this sentence is flawed ("currently hold" "in the preceding 18 month period"), which may suggest this interpretation is not correct.

      Alternatively it could mean:-

Card Members who currently hold, or who have previously held, any Card product that was issued by American Express Australia Limited in the preceding 18 month period are ineligible for this offer.

This sentence appears correct, though who knows if it is what Amex intended.

Under this interpretation you would only be ineligible for the offer if you currently have, or previously had, an American Express-issued card that was approved and issued to you in the past 18 months. You should still be eligible if your current or previous card was issued more than 18 months ago, even if the card was cancelled within the past 18 months.

  • It is still 65000 points using a referral link. Hopefully AMEX will update it soon.

  • Does anyone know if having an Amex corporate card excludes you from these new card deals?

  • Not sure if it's changed but $450 credit can only be used on Qantas flights booked the Amex travel sight.
If for whatever reason (like COVID restrictions) you need to cancel, your full ticket price gets refunded back as Amex Travel Qantas Credit.

Whole bunch of restrictions attached to that like:
    * New fare must be equal or higher in value
    * Travel must remain international and country of origin must remain the same
    * Name changes are not permitted
    * Ticket must be rebooked and travel completed by 31/12/2021 (my original travel date was in March 2020 for reference)

Compare that to if you booked directly with Qantas. You would get your full ticket price refunded.

This has been a pain for me as I would have preferred it to be refunded.

If you cancel your card before the flight gets cancelled, they are forced to refund the travel credit into your bank account… Risky game which worked out for me recently haha

      • Same here. Got my travel credit refunded to my bank account. So basically paid no annual fee for the card 😄

        • So I'm due to cancel my card before the 12 months renew due mid Nov, since the Qantas flight was cancelled back in May, best to just cancel the card first then try and discuss the refund later?
I actually booked the flights for a fellow ozbargainer and i refunded him but never really knew how to go about the refunds with Amex/Qantas.

      • Oh wow I really wished I knew to do this! Got like 1.5k worth of credit now :(

      • I still have the credit to use and my renewal is coming up in Jan. I will be cancelling my card in dec/jan prob.

Can I book a flight, then cancel the card, then cancel the flight myself and I will get the $450 refunded back into my bank account? Or does this only work if they cancel the flight on their end?

        Cheers

  • Would have been a good time if I didn't hold an Explorer already… ah well. Planning a domestic trip mid next year so the Travel Credit would be nice. QF Ultimate would be a good long term card, then cycle through Visa/Mastercard.

  • Can you switch to the explorer after you receive the bonus on this card?

    • Nothing stopping you making the transition to Explorer afterwards but make sure all your QF points are banked first. But you won't get the Explorer bonus points. Also requires a callup I think.

      • Perfect, been wanting the explorer for a while but the sign-up bonus has been a little lacklustre. Thanks for the tip!

      • Do you mean switch directly from this card to explorer without having to cancel it first? I’ve been under the impression that you can only switch between cards within the same reward point types.

        • Yeah the old card (in this case the QF Ult) will need to be cancelled, and then I think you need to make a hard transition to Explorer afterwards through a callup I think. No bonus points on the Explorer though.

However, sometimes there are opportunities every now and then to upgrade to a stronger card as long as it is on the same reward type and that can make you eligible for bonus points. For instance QF discovery to QF Ultimate has been done before.

  • Anyone know if a DJ store card counts as a previous card?

    • Doesn't count

  • Can I refer and get extra points?

    • This is only through the Qantas website so no 100k bonus for Qantas Ultimate referrals. You can however still refer someone for the 100k Qantas Premium offer.
